England Cricket 2015

All out 198, innings defeat. Get Gabi back here.

Root, Buttler and Rashid excellent with the bat, Morgan decent. Rashid and Finn magic with the ball.

Completely different approach to the one day game - clearly the guys at the top of the order were under orders to play freely, score quickly and not worry about the traditional "build a foundation". Didn't work for Roy, but if any 2 from the top 4 score heavily then a big score is always on the cards.

I hope Rashid gets picked for the Ashes. Moeen simply is not an International bowler.....and I'm hoping this is Finn maturing rather than just having an exceptional day.

Amazing performance from England really considering how they've looked in the ODI format over the last year and more. Really glad that Rashid has done well, never been treated very well by England IMO, he's never going to be super cheap but he can take wickets (Yorkshire's use of him to wrap up tails is a skill that could be very useful to Eng too) and can make some very valuable runs.

We've tended to have patient accumulators at the top of the order in ODIs; your Cooks, Trotts and Ballances, and it hasn't done us any good. The sides that do well pick naturally attacking players to open the batting. Hales is a no-brainer to open IMO, I couldn't believe how long it took England to give him a game at the world cup.

That game has made me think about getting tickets for the ODI at Trent Bridge, they're not cheap though :(

The game has changed in one fundamental way: you have to risk losing heavily in order to win. Occasionally with this approach you get bowled out cheaply.

One unfortunate aspect of this change is that there are far fewer close games than there used to be.

and can make some very valuable runs.

The way teams are playing now makes that essential now doesn't it. Obviously there've always been more allrounders picked in one-day games but if you're going to play in such an attacking style you have to bat really deep - a number 8 can't be the sort of allrounder who'll hang around and get you 20 runs any more, they have to be able to play the sort of innings he played yesterday, coming in with a lot of overs left and scoring quickly. You can have a Finn or two at 10 and 11 but beyond that if you have to sacrifice a bit of bowling quality teams will do it.

Morgan batting quite beautifully at the moment. Buttler taking a back seat. Big run chase though.
