2016 Coup in Turkey?

America shouldn't hand over Gulen to that Islamist virtual dictator Erdogan......bastard should have been put up against a wall & shot. He brought the coup on himself. He's playing tough guy.....shutting down Incirlik.....hampering the fight against ISIS, which Erdogan was only pretending to fight. Time to threaten cutoff of all military & economic aid.
Why also, are you assuming that Turkey is in anyway reliant on US economic or military aid? They really are not.

What they going to do right now though? Erdogan is going to exactly what he wanted to and been manouvering to make possible for years now - that's his whole MO. See theongoing stand off between the US and Turkey over the YPG/J+SDF right now.

Aye, fair enough. Dangerous game to play though, if the US had nothing to do with this coup then they're guaranteeing an open mind to the next one. Might not be anyone left to revolt by then though I suppose.

No they're not. The AK Party needs no assistance in such affairs.

I never said they fucking needed them . There were pics of yesterday of some of the people on top of the tank giving fascist salutes . The govt doesn't need the grey wolves to persecute its opponents . But the grey wolves will certainly not miss the opportunity .

There's reports a number of soldiers were simply thrown off the bridge, and one possibly beheaded .

And by the looks of a few characters in this pic it'd wouldnt surprise me .

There seems to be loads of support for Erdogan in Muslim nations right now. Previously people I have spoken to have been focused on Turkey trading with Israel and were disapproving.

Today a friend posted this picture and tells me many of his friends are praising Erdogan as a saviour of Islam.

So many brainless twerps from outside Turkey who support Erdo just because of religion, when they have no idea of what it's like to live under his "reign".

I tweeted something last night about Erdogan using this as pretext for rounding up judges. The amount of people who approved of this was a little frightening.

BBC is reporting that Erdogan is talking about getting the death penalty back for this event and that he will discuss it with the political opposition.

On a tangent here but I wonder would the Govt be able to bring back the death penalty in the UK, post brexit?

no. Its long not been accepted really, everyone gets their blood up now and then and talks of it in heat but the end of the endings began when it stopped being public ritual and became something away from our eyes. Lack of complicity leads to revulsion. Pierpoint, our last hangman, I keep meaning to get his bio. Bet its grim reading mind

1) it was done away with in the 1960s, before joining the common market;
2) you can't have the death penalty and be in the council of europe; no one is proposing leaving the c of e;
3) not the public support for it there once was

reports across twitter of HDP offices being attacked across the country

Yesterday, I saw on Facebook Live Map some offices being attacked by a mob in the centre of Turkey but didn't know what it was about. The coup had finished by then.

If there is firing going on in Istanbul tonite, I can't find it. Scrolled over all the live cams. There are mobilizations again over all the country but they seem peaceful.

No-one is trying to destroy the Kurds. Erdogan wants to destroy the PKK.

To conflate the PKK with "the Kurds" is like conflating the IRA with "the Irish."
Have the Turkish Kurds ever been allowed a referendum on their autonomy?

Supposedly they could have taken him out but for some unknown reason didn't:

At height of Turkish coup bid, rebel jets had Erdogan's plane in their sights

Probably false flag. If it was a real coup he would have been fragged. If you strike at the king you must kill him.
Aye, it has all the hallmarks of a govt instigated 'coup'
The plotters all middle level military, no real planning, in fact no real determination except the vague hope that the 'people' would rise up in support.
