Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuugger. Beaten by 1.97, never really looked closeIncluding KJT! Fucking flew over 1.95!
Brendan Foster said he was the greatest British athlete of all time. I struggled with that because I can remember Jonathan Edwards in his prime and Sebastian Coe when he was more than just mortal. But I think Brendan was right. He always carried himself with dignity and his reputation is almost enhanced by his renewed mortality.
I've got no time for christians but, curiously, I liked Jonathan Edwards even despite that and his world record jump was and is still extraordinary. 23 years have passed and no-one has ever seriously approached it and you can bet it was drug-free!Edwards in his prime was a Christian who wouldn't jump on a Sunday (twat - even if he did renounce this later in a 'crisis of faith') and Lord Coe was always a Tory cunt waiting to be beaten by Steve Ovett.

Coe was not political then but he was such a smooth and beautiful runner with an effortless change of speed. He broke three world records in a year and his 800m world record knocked more than a second and a half off a previous superb record and his new mark stood for 18 years.
<obligatory "a few inches is nothing to be impressed by" gag>Er christian was within a few inches of it this year.

Others have other kinds of claim, I'd say, as they were also record-breakers.I don't know what I feel. It's all right. Everyone wants to go out on a high but life is often a bit contrary.
He was bringing his dream to an end and it was like a touch of reality to help him reacquaint himself with life back in the waking world. Something like that.
