Key to that is the splits, isn't it. 52.3 for the leaders in the first lap. He was maybe half a second behind, came in 145.8. He ran an almost perfectly even race.

Before my time but I'm liking the nickname and the risky but successful tactics. Reminds me, nickname-wise of Miruts 'Yifter the shifter' Yifter a few years later - he was something else.

Interesting.. been watching Kelly Holmes at Athens 800m virtually the same tactics... Brendon Foster points out even splits per 200m at the end.
