Ain't that the truth As much soul-searching as we're doing, they must be going nuts. Notwithstanding the two pull ups in the M 4 x 100 and W 4 x 400, but across the board their sprinters haven't really delivered beyond McLeod in the 110m hurdles.Jesus, this is not Jamaica's tournament
Yeah, that was really weird. Hearing Cram screaming "the Poles are coming back" and just seeing an empty finishing lineWhat the hell was that camera work at the end of the 4x400 women's race? We focus on the yanks winning by miles and then don't see any of the race for the line everybody else is having.
Someone like Carl Lewis you mean. An undeniably great athlete with a long and glittering career who just had a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way (not really an utter cunt though). Before reading your comment I was being grateful that Bolt didn't have the personality of Nigel Mansell - that would have been equally terrible. Can you imagine if Bolt had been an utter cunt? Still the fastest on earth, but someone no-one really liked.
Does anyone know if Jack Green will get a medal? Or whoever was dropped from the women's 4 x 400m?
Just a drug cheat.Someone like Carl Lewis you mean. An undeniably great athlete with a long and glittering career who just had a habit of rubbing people up the wrong way (not really an utter cunt though).
The whole stadium? Why do the athletes have their back to the stadium during the medal ceremony?
about 3/4 of it.The whole stadium?
In 2017, I'm inclined to give him a pass on that front. He failed 3 drug tests for stimulants (which were covered up by the US) in the run up to the 1984 Olympics, but the margins by which he failed would have been within acceptable levels when the rules were changed a year or two later. Though drug testing was introduced in 1968, the testers didn't have a clue what they were doing until the late 80s if not later.Just a drug cheat.
USA, Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and one or two others were systematically cheating their arses off throughout the 80s, hence the world records from that time that mysteriously dried up when out of season testing came in. Lewis was a drug cheat. As were most of his rivals. The tests he failed were 88 not 84, btw.In 2017, I'm inclined to give him a pass on that front. Medal ceremony commentary says you are correctPretty sure it's a squad medal, not just a finalists one.
LBJ - You've got me. I was conflating what went on in 83/84 with what went on in 1988. There were some suspicious goings in 83/84 too with the codes which match tests to athletes going missing at a meeting Lewis was at. There were known to be a few positive tests but the missing codes meant they didn't know which athletes they belonged to.USA, Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia and one or two others were systematically cheating their arses off throughout the 80s, hence the world records from that time that mysteriously dried up when out of season testing came in. Plus of course, he suddenly started needing braces on his teeth in his mid-20s. Hmmm.
I'm not so pessimistic. The fact all those records from pre-89 in women's athletics still stand must be very frustrating for top athletes now, knowing there's a good chance they will never be beaten, but it also shows that the new regime brought in then made a big difference. Cheating is much harder now.LBJ - You've got me. I was conflating what went on in 83/84 with what went on in 1988. I was also far too optimistic about drug testing improving after the late 80s. Recent athletic drug revelations have been the result of whistleblowing rather than good testing.
The non-Bolt Jamaican 100m men were complaining about the race being delayed, saying they were kept waiting so long that they cooled down after having done their warm-ups.2 of their relay teams had runners pull up with injuries mid race. That's tough. Something wrong with prep/warm up or just bad luck? Who knows
Yes, I heard that too. It would be the same for all teams though? I think Bolt can be forgiven in the circumstances but maybe the comment reflects more about the rest of the underperformance of the Jamaican team, a hint at a wider issue of preparation and race day coaching issues? The non-Bolt Jamaican 100m men were complaining about the race being delayed, saying they were kept waiting so long that they cooled down after having done their warm-ups.
Aye, possibly. I did think "well it was the same for everyone" too, but I guess there could still be a point that it's not going to happen every time to anyone who has cooled down, but that it made it more likely, more of a danger.Yes, I heard that too.
