Who will win the 2024 US election?

Who will win?

naah, declarations are frequently made while others are still voting. It's far from unheard of for California & Alaska to still be voting after the winner has been declared.

It is clear that there is no law against this, and it will continue. The East Coast states will declare their results while the polls are still open on the West Coast.

I am fairly sure that's just down to it not being one election, but 51 separate ones, so each state + DC declares once they have completed their count, with no consideration to others.

It just seems this little town is having a bit of fun, and it's not a proper declaration as those votes need to be counted at county level, and fed into the state result.

naah, again. Towns, counties and districts all count and tabulate separately and can announce once voting has finished in their region. The difference with the tiny place(s) is that they are the only ones who can guarantee that all the electors have actually voted. If 1 person decided they weren't going to this election, they couldn't announce.

Extra thought, if I lived there, I'd definitely be giving it the old "Vote at midnight? But that's slippers and cocoa time. And I'm a bit knackered and need a lie in. I'll pop in around midday tomorrow if that's alright" (to spoil my ballot obvs)
thing is, if there are only 6 voters, everyone would know, or guess, who spoilt the ballot i'd have thought.

The first result is in, from a wobble-top town called Dixville Notch, that has just 6 voters, all votes were in within 15 minutes of the poll opening, so they've been able to declare - 3 for Harris / 3 for Trump.

I kid you not. :D

Three votes for Trump after none in 2020? Dicksville Notch, more like

There was a lot of that in 2020 IIRC
yeah - but think it could potentailly much worse this time around. Youd hope whatever the US equivalent of the eletoral commision and law enforcment have been planning for such an eventuality - but in states/counties where MAGAites are in positions of power this may well be hampered - or worse ... Its like a grim echo of 1930s germany where the nazis used their street presence and ilfiltration of civic bodies to intimidate voters and sabotage and obstruct the opposition parties - and had been allowed to become too strong for the state to stamp them out.

Hurrah! I've had a beer delivery, so one way or another I am set up for tonight :)

I've been looking for options for distracting myself since the tally probably won't come in until 3 am. I'm not a drinker. The coffee houses all close by 6 pm. I could go shopping, but that isn't going to go past 9 pm. I could go to a movie, but again, that doesn't get me much past midnight. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Go and throw rocks at a polling centre? :p

Just returned from voting. I vote in a very rural red district with only about 1,000 voters county-wide. There were 30 people ahead of me in line. It's going to be a huge turnout.

That's probably due to the number of ballot initiatives in play. There's two on legalizing medical marijuana. Two on abortion (one putting the right to it in the state constitution, and one putting the prohibition in the constitution. One providing vouchers for religious schools (sponsored by two Catholic billionaires*). And one on worker's sick leave requirements. It's going to be a long day.

* They're trying for something small with the aim of driving a stake through the heart of church/state separation later. Its "only" 10 million dollars, which either one could easily step up and fund themselves.

Considering what may well happen, I'd seriously consider starting drinking. Or maybe heroin.

In the original poll, I plumped for Trump winning the election, but these last few days where he's been ranting about widespread voter fraud suggests that his camp have told him it's a lot closer than they originally thought. Hence, his resultant meltdown.

The problem about predicting this election is that there is a lot of 'shy voters' on both sides.

If you don't mind me asking, how easy would it be in a republican area to just not count democrats' votes or alter the result? I would have thought if there was any vote fraud or suppression going on in either direction it would be in places where the result was already assumed to be a 'landslide', or in very small towns like the one that already announced its result?

I can't get my head around the concept of a shy Trump voter

i remember in the last election there was some counties in places like Kentucky where it was 89% republican or something, and i remember thinking that Putin would be embarrassed at such numbers...lol. is it really the case that people there love Trump that much or that the democrats' votes aren't being counted, or that they aren't able to vote at all? or that there are very few people in some of these places and they're all republicans?

I live in NYC. They exist in NYC.

What's noticeable in my neighborhood is that they there are far more election signs in people's yards for elections further down the ballot than there is for the Presidential election. There's a lot of Republicans where I live but I've only seen a handful of Trump/Vance signs in people's yards or gardens.

Is that because of Trump's bad reputation in New York in general when he was a property developer?

That's interesting - there are still also quite a few Tories in London but it does get seen as a predominantly 'left wing' place.

Imho, it's more about the economy. Kentucky used to be a big coal producer but that's declined over the last few decades. Trump has made a lot of noise in the past about firing up the fossil fuel industries.

Also, there will always be those voters who swallow the kool aid in order to "own the libs"...
