Looks like he's determined to leave the maximum covid chaos behind for Biden to deal with, and doesn't care how many extra deaths he causes before he finally leaves office.

In stark contrast to the Thanksgiving message by the incoming president Joe Biden, who called for a scaling down of the celebration, the outgoing president Donald Trump has called in a proclamation for Americans to “gather” for the holiday. The final line of the annual Thanksgiving proclamation, issued by the White House press secretary's office on Wednesday evening, read: "I encourage all Americans to gather, in homes and places of worship, to offer a prayer of thanks to God for our many blessings."

The message from the White House, first reported by CNN, goes directly against the repeated advisories issued by government’s own public health experts, who have warned that Thanksgiving gatherings are likely to significantly contribute to the US's growing number of Covid-19 cases. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended against travelling for Thanksgiving as a means of preventing further spread of the virus.

His madness is beyond belief.

Nah its not just petulance more power to the 'god and freedom' brigade and more rejection of science in favour of feelings. Just like this supreme court ruling they just did, which would not have happened without trumpo stuffing his catholic judge in there.
They just ruled against limits to numbers who can gather in churches because praying is more important than not killing your neighbours.

That's very interesting, and reminds me of how Hannah Arendt observed that those without social connections were more drawn to Nazism - For Hannah Arendt, totalitarianism is rooted in loneliness – Samantha Rose Hill | Aeon Essays

If her theory is correct, then the long term political consequences of extended lockdown, on top of generally increased social atomisation, could be very dangerous indeed.
Of course, as pointed out/asked many times since in response to her outdated elite vision of a mass society of individualised idiots led by the nose incapable of thinking for themselves (apart from her and her nazi lover of course) how does this account for the mass popularity of left-wing movements (which she, remember, also called totalitarian) at the same time - beyond a generic desire for community? Which then doesn't say anything. I think for her - and many others of her type, then and now- it was far more likely they just didn't really like the results of people thinking for themselves and so sought a way to deny their authenticity - the absolute classic elite position on the left and right for the last 150 years. And exactly what fascism was based on - fear of the masses.

I wonder why this is. It seems counterintuitive to me.

I don’t mean I don’t believe it, I mean that I find it really puzzling and contrary to what I would suppose.

Why would isolated people choose to turn against their fellows and work toward greater degrees of suspicious/ hate etc rather than seeking for greater connection? Is it that loneliness breeds fear/vulnerability and thus suspicion of others? But why this and not a reduction in mistrust in order to engender greater social connection?

ETA
Having read further along the thread, butcher’s response gives me some context for my puzzlement.

I think you're being a bit unfair to Arendt here.

Her point was that democracy depends on groups with clearly articulated interests, and when people become atomised and disorganised they cannot determine their collective interests. People who are members of a union or some sort of organisation are able to decide on common collective interests in a way that atomised individuals are not. I don't think this is an elitist point to make.

The second point is that by being in isolation, people lose common reference points for reality and are susceptible to a totalising ideology which provides a simulcra of reality. Mass media in the form of newspapers and radio was novel in that era, so I think she was thinking of people alienated in society, with no clear social bonds, getting lost in the ideological tinted version of reality created by Nazi (and Soviet) propaganda.

I think there is a clear parallel here to lonely people getting lost in Qanon and conspiracy theory echo chambers, whose detachment from society makes them more susceptible to an alternative version of reality which is internally consistent but false.

Do these people never watch disaster films, the churches are always stuffed full of corpses, last place you should go in a plague.

I’ve been spending far too much time on QAnon twitter madness lately but the sense of community, banding together as a force for good against the massed powers of evil is probably the most obvious thing about it. They urge each other on to keep the faith, stay strong trust the Plan.
Today Sidney herself retweeted the Q tagline, Where We Go One We Go All. The sad thing is it seems to be a more or less completely online phenomenon, so idk whether the shared grievances and mad myths actually help people feel any less lost in their daily lives.

I was reading somewhere (maybe this thread? everything moves very fast) about there being a strong correlation between isolated individuals and support for Trump. I guess this stuff creates a community of sorts.
