US election 2020 thread

I think the Trump campaign targeted Black voters with a combination of misinformation about Trump being a great president with a great record on issues affecting Black Americans and real information about Joe Biden being a terrible candidate with a horrible record.
.....what about the targeting of Black LIves Matter, and Trumps support for white supremacy? How did that message not get through and the other one did?

We need a general theory of why anyone, notwithstanding race or age or geographical location, could possibly look at the babbling cretin Trump and see a man fit for anything at all besides being ground up into chum and used as a low-grade fertiliser.
Standard conservative tactics - fear. Fear of the other who will come to take your job, who will look too long at your wife and maybe get those other stupid politicians to take your guns away. Fear is critical to the belief that some strong man can come into power and save you from those evil others. If you don't fear, you don't need the strong man, you don't need that stern father to punish others for you. Entire media organisations are built around the need to keep fears stoked and populations voting for strong men to save them. It's not even a US thing, it's global and always has been.

It really isn't
Makes your twitter feed feel dirty.

I‘ve looked at a few of the batshit right winger tweets people have posted on here, and find that tweets from twats like Lawrence Fox are popping up underneath, as though that would be my kind of thing. Not really a problem as I pretty much only go on Twitter these days if I follow a link from here.

Although tbf Clinton also had a horrible record for much the same reasons as Biden.

Yep, but she never actually held office until 2000, while Biden's crappy record stretches over the '70s, '80s, and '90s - with the way Biden spearheaded a crime bill that disproportionately affected Black people and led to mass incarceration, then went around on the campaign trail this year saying shit like "if you have a problem figuring out whether you're for me or Trump, then you ain't black,” I'm not surprised the Trump campaign was able to peel a few votes away.

Nero appointed his horse as a Consul , how do you top that? Maybe send a Creationist horse to the Electoral College?

North Dakota elected a dead guy. This was the bit I found interesting:

The Washington Post in 2014 said there were no recorded cases in the US of people dying during an election campaign and losing.

"Dead people appear to be batting 1.000 in their Congressional races. Nonetheless, we do not recommend it as a campaign strategy," wrote correspondent Philip Bump.

I mean instead of 'found' you could just say 'counted'. It's not that suprising to find votes at a vote counting centre.
Well, this may be the game plan of saying they had to count postal ones later - set up the idea postal votes are dodge, set loose your 'It's true if enough people say it' social media mob to say 'Oh, isn't it a bit suspicious how these votes just appeared days later!'

Yuwipi Woman if there are trump or biden signs outside people's houses round where you are have you noticed anybody taking them down yet?

I took mine down because its a small hazard to have one in your yard, and it couldn't effect the vote either way now, not that it ever could. TBH, I haven't seen many Biden signs because the Biden campaign didn't waste money sending them to a deep red state. I got mine because I had it printed at a print shop. They do those cheap now.

I do still see Trump signs and flags. Its not unusual to see one flying from someone's truck driving around. A couple of these have been "burners."*

* trucks set up to produce as much black smoke as they can, usually with a couple of pipes behind the passenger compartment.

Well one consequence of long term disenfranchisement and being on the rough end of injustice is that the mainstream narrative doesnt resonate and people posing as anti-establishment can gain traction. Over the years a lot of the focus on conspiracy theories on u75 has been missing the popularity of a bunch of theories within sections of US society that arent white.

I like to keep my feed clear of numpties, I stick to astronomy and physics as its a nicer place and only visit the grand guignol occasionally.

I do try to follow some numpties, as I like to know what the other side is thinking, so that includes the full gamut from MAGA types to charming left-wing antisemites. Does mean seeing some horrible shit sometimes, but I'm trying not to be in a bubble.

maybe some younger black voters are against all the covid restrictions? Definitely think this was a wider factor in trumps strong performance overall - one issue which would have had appeal outside his base vote.

Yes in that sense for all the pandemic took away from Trump, it did offer him a fresh opportunity to tell some people what they wanted to hear, never mind the utter disconnect with reality.

I think you are turning a low key point into a generalisation and then overdoing the indignation in response.

It's pretty tiresome and unnecessary as the poster made no comment on all black people, but that some young black voters might have been influenced by very public pro trump endorsements by some rappers.

Either high profile figures making comments can be influencial, or they can never be influencial. Which is it?

They can be influential, but I don't think the endorsements from rappers (which ones? where from? let's get more specific if we want to take this seriously) are a key factor in the increase in the Trump vote among both black men and women, and I think trying to view voters in these homogenous racial blocks is in itself problematic. I need to know where exactly those increases in black votes for Trump came from disproportionately, and the wealth levels of those areas, in order to have a clearer idea of what in Trump's message might have appealed.

In any case I think this focus on the (relatively small) increase in various artificially-constructed "voting blocks" for Trump is a distracting narrative and trying to explain it away is missing the point.

I think the real point here, as everywhere, is that Biden was obviously a shit candidate and most everyone that voted for him was still holding their nose as they did it, and lots of people flat out refused, 25% of people still didn't vote, and many people will have voted Trump just out of spite because they hated Biden as a pick.

Election officials in states banned from counting early and absentee votes until Election Day: "Due to the volume of votes, results in big cities will be the last to come in."

Trump campaign: "Isn't it convenient how they just happened to find all these ballots from urban voters?"
