Tottenham Hotspur 2020-21

Some tweet from some Gooner was annoyingly sobering....Was words to the effect of "Only Spurs could go through Poch, Mourinho and Conte and still be this shit"

And...They may have a point, right? I've never been a fan of owner bashing, but at some point we can't deny that if Conte fails, then it is an administration that has burnt managers (and players) that have excelled pretty much everywhere else they go.

I'd be happy to throw the kitchen sink (financially) at Conte tbh. Not sure if he is a twat expressing his leverage considering the above (and struggles we had when we originally tried recruiting a manager), but frankly we have to risk it with someone?!

I'd agree with that. Not backing Poch to put the finishing touches to a squad which challenged for the league and reached the CL final was clearly a mistake, but that's water under the bridge; Jose got some backing but underperformed (he's not the same Jose as 15 years ago tbh); Nuno is a good guy and a good manager but perhaps the very highest level is beyond him.

Conte is a different kettle of fish - he's a manager who has challenged and won things wherever he's gone, including recently. Financially, it's not looking too bad - we have Gil, Lo Celso and Ndombele out on loan and potentially bringing some substantial income in sales without weakening the squad since Conte clearly doesn't think much of them. Possibly add Rodon to that list, personally I think he's an excellent backup for the central role in the 3, but Conte has gone with Sanchez & Romero in Dier's absence so that hints to him being worth more on paper than he is as a Spurs player. Bergwijn would fetch a few quid too.

Ask Conte what he wants and go get them. It will be another centre back (De Ligt, De Vrij, Kilman?), a RWB (Lamptey, Spence, Aarons?), a striker (difficult to pin down who this will be) and maybe a centre midfielder - in which case possibly Winks or Hojbjerg could be sold (5 into 2 doesn't go). Yes it will take some serious money, but we'll have a fair amount to start with.

I would like to thank Messrs Conte, Kane et all for bringing us some relief in these dark days and proving that some things, at least, will never change.

#ConteIn
#LampardOut

Kane is different gravy, strolling round the pitch like he owns it. Far too strong for defenders when he holds the ball up, far too good for them when he gets himself in space, absolutely clinical when through on goal.

yep, agreed on Kane. The second goal looked amazing - I was in the Paxton and have only seen it once. I thought both of our new signings were excellent too.

That said, Everton were diabolical. Could easily end up in the bottom 3

Didn't see the match but seeing highlights of his last few games it looks like Kane actually isn't all that bad. I'd always thought he was a goal hanger and particularly lucky. :)

2nd goal was incredibly difficult. The vast majority of strikers would have taken a touch or shanked it into the stands; Kane made it look like an easy tap in, with his weaker foot.

Bentancur is deceptively quick, looks like he's strolling around but really covers the ground.

Bit of a shout to Matt Doherty, he's been awful for much of his time with us but he was as excellent as he was v Leeds. A midfielder's through ball for Kane's first and a perfectly weighted diagonal for his second.

yeas my Son

Spurs remaining fixtures a good deal easier than Arsenal
Nothing can possibly go wrong from here :)

Great win, put the Massives in their place. Now to put a proper run together - another home match up next against Newcastle, who have looked excellent at times but their run seems to have come to an abrupt end once safety is all but guaranteed.

Anyone still watching?

Great second half, front 3 all superb and even the 2 wingbacks were barrelling in at the far post for fun.

4th for now. Arsenal, we're coming for you.

ps Chelsea, that goes for you too

Still on the way home from the game Zapp. A rather forgettable first half followed by a storming second. Didn’t see that coming at HT!

Agreed on our Forwards and (much maligned) WB’s. Romero very quickly established as official ‘cult hero’. Some of his tackles and interceptions greeted with roars and standing ovations. Him, Bentancur and Kulusevski have turned us around.

Can’t see Palace getting anything tomorrow night. Think we’ll rue the many avoidable losses and dropped points unfortunately

Palace can win that one. They're at home, and are more than capable of beating anyone on their day. Used to be "stop Zaha, stop Palace", but a team with Gallagher, Eze, Olise and Zaha at the sharp end of the pitch has got a lot going for it.

Chelsea were a #shambles, they've got a good headstart but a few more of those and they'll be looking nervously over their shoulders.

Love to see it! Well played Palace

Long way to go and they still have a game in hand. Plus, you know, Spursy 😩

I’ll be a ying to your yang, or something like that. You do the optimism. Pessimism seems to come naturally to me…

COYS
I can do optimism. They may have a game in hand, but it's now officially in our hands - beat Arsenal at WHL (yes I know) and match their results from now to the end of the season, we finish at least 4th.

Not discounting Man Utd or even West Ham but I couldn't be arsed doing their fixtures as well; you'd pick our run in, Arsenal's away games especially look difficult. Chelsea almost certainly have too much of a head start, but one more Brentford-esque slip up and they'll be getting nervous.

does set up the derby nicely - on a week night too which makes it much more likely i can watch it

Arsenal and Man Utd shat the bed, again. We struggled a bit, didn't play all that well, won 4-0. Get the fuck in, COYS!!!

the flick on from Kane? that was great intuition for sure...amazing control for a header too

Son making a good run for top scorer of the season, gaining on Salah fast

Yeah that one. I thought at first it was lucky but Kane clearly looked to see where Son was running. Great goal.

MOTD did one of their Top Ten programmes a few weeks ago, on number tens in the Premiership era. Some glaring absences - Cantona, Le Tissier, Sheringham - and I thought including Scholes was an odd one, because he always seemed more of an eight to me.

Is Kane becoming a ten? I mean that in the sense of his position, rather than his shirt number. Do England have the players to replicate what he does with Son, Kulusevski, Moura, etc?

England could, yes. Kane as a 9/10 hybrid works as long as the other forwards go past him when he drops off; Sterling or Rashford (awful current form, too good a player to be like that forever) would be the best placed to be a surrogate Son. Saka, an intelligent left footed right forward specialising in finding pockets of space between oppo defence and midfield is a very convincing Kulusevski tribute act.
