Tottenham Hotspur 2020-21

Embarrassing yesterday

Questionable team selection. Terrible substitutions. ‘Bryan’ Mason gets a pass though as there’s no way he should’ve been thrust into this position. So who will manage Spurs next season?

We are a shambles of a club. Kane will be off this summer, Son will probably follow him. The squad - so clearly lacking in integrity as professional footballers - has been in dire need of an overhaul since 2018. Now, in the summer of 2021 it’s gone from an overhaul to a major rebuild.

Any prospective candidate will have to work with Levy as he oscillates between loved up fan boy and micro managing megalomaniac. On a shoestring budget blamed on COVID and stadium costs.

Only a madman (albeit a greedy one) would want to step foot inside WHL. Sure, at their first press conference they’ll cite ‘world class facilities’ etc but when the inevitable trigger is pulled 18 months later with us struggling in mid table and out of Europe/domestic cups Levy will still be at the helm ready to rinse and repeat.

As well as a shambles we are a laughing stock. Us fans who have suffered more than anyone else connected with the club have been continually shit on, despite paying some of the highest ticket prices in the world and following the club home, away and in Europe.

I’m aware this has turned into a rant. To return to the original theme then, I have zero confidence that Spurs will be able to attract a successful, ambitious forward looking manager. And I’m not sure Levy or the board would recognise these qualities in any perspective candidate.

Slight enjoyment of the whole fiasco as a Gooner aside, tempered by the fact we are also a fiasco, the latest happenings are just bizarre. It really does seem Levy was happy to see the back of Mourinho, the apparent big game/one game specialist just before a cup final. Was he blinded by the incoming Super League cash? No worries, I'll get in a cheap, inexperienced manager who do what he's told, we can't get relegated from the Super League anyway? Could it be that simple?

Bad news for the Spurs, but also the Premiership, probably, is Kane and Son will be off unless they are mad.

Understand the slight enjoyment H. Schadenfreude is one of main impulses of football fans! Agree though. The timing of the sacking was weird. I can say that I was never in favour of JM’s appointment in the first place but the ending and the lacking of planning around a replacement has left me perplexed.

I think Arsenal are several stages ahead of Spurs in terms of rage and regime change. The murmurings about Kronke and the board have become almost uproarious - impressive gathering at the Emirates the other night.

There are those at Spurs who point to the stadium and the training facilities as well as evidence of cash spent on players to highlight that Daniel is doing all he can. So we are split really. If he were to hand the reins over to a Director of Football and confine himself to matters off the pitch then I’d be happier but I can’t see that happening.

Oh and the ESL thing - I was angry and upset with all concerned. However, for most of the protagonists life will probably, just roll on. Arsenal, 10th in the league, had the piss taken out of them, rightfully. Then there’s us! The stain of this debacle will be hard (impossible) to wash off, even after the laughter has stopped....(will it ever stop?)

Yeah, I wanted all the ESL teams to lose to their non-ESL opponents, Arsenal included in the week following that announcement, then when you won, my resolve on it waivered, but we went ahead and lost in any case.

The whole thing was an embarrassing farce and showed the owners really failed to understand that the players are the product they were selling, and thought they had carte blanche to do whatever they liked to maximise profit, from 'their' asset.

The bookies list of potential Spurs managers is garbage imo. What sort of coach would Levy want? What sort of coach would supporters want? Young promising with the ability to develop youth players and to be given time? Experienced manager with top four ambitions but would expect some transfer monies? Or someone who can work with the existing squad, rebuild confidence?

That's a good question. To me there's an obvious choice in Brendan Rodgers, it's whether he's attainable or not.

Our history and our current squad suit quick, attacking football - a mixture of possession based and high-press counter attacking. Having more possession would take some of the pressure off the defence, which isn't up to scratch - this isn't going to be the summer for mega-money transfers, nor do we need a huge overhaul. What we should be doing is moving on a few fringe players to generate funds, bringing in a couple of defenders, and playing with an identifiable, forward thinking style.

Rodgers almost won a title with Liverpool, did win titles at Celtic and has done a superb job with Leicester. Whether he'd come to us is open to debate but i'd at least be asking the question.

Not a hope in hell - why would he? (I'd say the same for my lot Arsenal - why on earth would he leave Leicester for either of us?)

Yup I really rate Rodgers and would have had him at Chelsea when we sacked Lampard but the board obviously had Tuchel marked out. Rodgers is good tactically, gets the nest out of squads and isn't scared to integrate youth players. The question would be, as you say, whether he'd come though

No doubt, Leicester are a better team than either of us right now. However; 60k stadia, bigger fanbases, higher budgets, potentially bigger transfer pots, bigger reputations for players; I'd say the ceiling for either Spurs or Arsenal are higher, even if the current reality is not.

I think that's our vanity, Spurs or Arsenal. Arsenal last won the league in 2003. Spurs in 1961. Leicester in 2015. Leicester will be in Europe next season, Arsenal and Spurs won't. And they have a manager big players will respect. Arsenal have a slight run on Spurs on that front, but nobody's going to Arsenal for no European football for Arteta over Rodgers

I get that, and I don't doubt that I have a fairly substantial Spurs bias. But, Arsenal were in the champions league every season for a decade plus, Spurs have been in Champions League or Europa League more or less every season since 2005; Leicester's league win can't and shouldn't ever be underestimated but they're relative newcomers to life at the top and (for now) are still seen as punching above their weight.

They won the league as recently as 2016, but they also were fighting relegation as recently as 2015.

I suppose my assumption Arsenal won't win the Europa here is slightly pessimistic. It's not entirely impossible

Bit of speculation in Portugal about a possible Nuno Santos move from Spurs to Wolves. Like Santos as a coach he was good at Porto and has had three good seasons at Wolve. The only problem is that he comes only via Jorge Mendes , which has a price and normally a mixed bag of players , some potential bargains others overpriced and overated. Mendes fondly referred to as the Portuguese mafia over here. Can't see it happening to be honest

Club looking for someone who reminds them of the manager they sacked

Brendan Rodgers or slightly left field, Eddie Howe. He did enough at Bournemouth to suggest with better players he'd be on to something.

Sessegnon can be an attacking left back in the same mould as Reguilon, his return would be a plus. Ditto Skipp who's been superb for Norwich, either as cover for Hojbjerg or alongside him depending on the opposition. A fit, motivated and firing Dele Alli would be like a new big money signing too.

Maybe his new dreads'll help?

Not too sure about the look (think he looks a prat but hey, his choice) but he played with a swagger against Sheff Utd, and at his best he's absolutely brilliant. The late run onto an Alderweireld direct ball is a real weapon, hard to defend against without putting pressure high up the pitch - do that and our technical players can play round you.

Almost forgotten about Alli tbh . Reguilon is good . You haven’t got a bad squad thinking about it . I like Eddie Howe needs a bit of time and patience but he could build something .

I like the dreads - maybe he's maturing a bit - and Sheffield United are a championship team so no lessons to be learned IMO
