The Tour Of France 2021

Horrendous place to crash! That was a steep-sided bit of road.

Jesus what are they made of? 70 kmh and thrown down a cliff only to be stopped by a tree. And back on the bike.
Nuts isn't it.

The time Geraint Thomas wrapped himself around a telegraph pole, and got back on the bike.

I'm ambivalent about wanting Cav to get the record. Of course I do want him to, but on the other hand, this is Eddy Merckx. More than a sprinter, the cannibal who ate everything

Merckx has plenty of records. The two riders can never be compared.
Right now I just want to se the Wolfpack eat the peloton.

Hmm... we always end up with certain mythic figures through sports in general. Products partly of ability, partly of their time. Remember that under slightly different circumstances Lance Armstrong would be inscribed in the history books with the most GC wins of the TDF. It seems healthy to have people chipping away at them sometimes.

If the record was held by Cippolini or Abdujaparov, I wouldn't have any ambivalence. But Eddy Merckx, man

A man who devoured his teammates to win, doped to the gills no doubt.

I mean obviously I think Merckx is the greatest rider of all time, just saying it’s no bad thing if bits of that are challenged. I hope one day he’s toppled altogether, though the changing nature of training and competition may make that impossible.

Just to be controversial. Merckx was a beast and an all rounder that could win any type of race. On that basis does that make Cav’s achievement greater as he only has one weapon in his armoury?

He only ever won the Ronde twice. Mind you no one has ever won it more than three times. Shows just how hardcore that race is. The best.

Certainly the greatest sprinter.

I kept away from all things tour today then in a zoom meeting with mil, bloody fil blurted out the result
Fantastic win. All he has done is equal the record, he has yet to beat it. All he has to do now is survive the Alps and make it to Paris. I for one, will be biting finger nails all the way.
Can we expect a tribute if he gets to Paris? Paint the town green. Let him lead out on champs elysees....

Nice

I think I posted my dream here the other day where the other sprinters don’t contest and led him win, but I’m not sure they would do that and don’t think Cav would want to break the record in that fashion such his respect for the race! I’m genuinely impressed how Cav appears in interviews after wins, it’s all about the race and the team rather than him. It’s a change from the early career cockiness.

Marks far too loyal to current team for that to happen. He was clearly knackered today and rightly so. He needs an easy day tomorrow as he has a big climbing day to survive on Sunday...
