The Ashes 2015

Let's talk about team selection. Specifically, Australia's decision to go in to the match a man down by swapping one Marsh brother for the other, thus losing a front line bowler and adding a walking wicket to an already brittle batting order. Should have dropped Voges for Siddle, at least they would have had slightly more firepower and a non-shot playing stubborn arse with the bat

Clarke made it very clear yesterday that he didn't agree with coming into this match with only two Mitches. 'Ask the selectors' was his answer to why MM wasn't playing. And on the field he made his point with filth from Warner. tbh, that he would do something like that to make a point on the first day of a live test match shows how shot he is mentally. We might just be watching Clarke play his final test innings right here.

Coming into this series, I thought it was England's selection that would be the big issue. I still think the side is unbalanced, but Aus have been so feeble that it hasn't mattered.

For Aus, Hazlewood's been a disappointment. I heard big things about him and he sounded ideal for England.

I agree, Clarke looks shot. It's not just out of form, he looks like he doesn't know why he is even holding a bat, like he has no idea how to play the game. Was it not Clarke who was instrumental in removing the captain from the selection committee? Bit rich to complain about team selection if that was the case, then again it was a poor selection, it just screamed that they didn't trust their batting and Clarke going down to 5 just rammed that home.

I read somewhere or other last week that Lehmann imposed that as a condition of his becoming coach, and Clarke has been moaning about it ever since.

S. Marsh in for Voges would have been OK. I don't have a problem with the selection of S.Marsh, he's scored runs on the tour and if you're not going to give him a chance why was he on the plane?

I was having a chat with the aussies I play cricket with the other day and the general consensus is that the reason people like Voges and S.Marsh are on the tour is because there is no one else, whilst their bowling looks promising at the moment the batting well has run dry.

Fair enough, that would make more sense. Lehman played with the great aussie team who all thought Clarke was show pony twat with no aussie style back bone, so that might explain it.

So, have you all seen the massive group of aussies on an organised tour at this test in matching shirts and caps? Saw them on TV yesterday on the highlights

That's who I am sitting with at the oval. It's ok to wear my England 2010 tour top from the Oz tour when I sit with them right?

Sure the father in law will see the funny side.

Siddle's a bit unlucky not to get a go, I think, given the shortcomings of both Starc and Hazlewood. Despite his 6-fer here, Starc still hasn't proven himself a worldbeater in test cricket - far too much was made of his white-ball success. Siddle would have given a bit of balance alongside Johnson, who I still think is mostly a terrific bowler.

Sure Siddle is unlucky not to have had a game, but he's never been more then OK, he'll do a job but not set the world on light. Pat Cummins is the one to watch out for.

Then there's Pattinson. What's happened to him?

I agree about Siddle, but he's a reliable trier.

Anyway, Aus's real problem is the batting. Rogers is retiring, Clarke's on his way out, Watson's finally lost all his reviews, Marsh is crap. They're in for a mass clear-out, but who knows who comes in.

Isn't he another of the fast bowlers who've had chronic injury problems?
Yeah. Latest medical thinking on that is that the bones don't harden properly until you're 25-26. Mitch Johnson suffered five separate stress fractures in his back before he played test cricket.

Hard job, fast bowling. You're not properly ready for it till you're 26, then you're getting too old about five or six years later.

On tour with the A side, alongside Agar

Back to the test and with all this talk about technique in English conditions shouldn't Voges be the best bet? Not only a decent history of county cricket but this is his home ground.

Just got home from the ground. A good day I'd say, good to see an actual contest rather than another capitulation from Australia.

Broad and Ali's partnership was the highlight for me, there was a spell of about three overs when they were both just twatting everything into the middle distance. That and watching the Aussies struggle to get anything at all from Broad's early spells with the ball.

Two wickets overturned due to no balls though, that was gutting.

Starc was good for the Aussies, Warner was the pick of their batsmen but even he never looked like he was heading for triple figures. Voges crawled towards his half century without ever doing anything interesting.

There were a couple of moments when the Australian fans acted like utter twats, the lowpoint coming when they all started shouting 'show us your sister' to Joe Root's little brother as he waited by the boundary with the drinks.

It's reminding me a little of 2010/11 now. Ignore the draw at Brisbane (a strange game in itself - England on the back foot, then on top by a margin of 'insane') and we have: massive England win; Australia dominate to level up the series; England win next two to pull away and secure the Ashes with ease.

OK so Down Under it was based a little more on complete batting dominance, but this is swinging, seaming, greentop England so it doesn't quite work that way here.

Making an assumption we'll win this Test obv ;)
