The title of this thread - "The amount and pace of migration to the UK is unprecedented" - is probably true, and UK could be exchanged for most peaceful, ecological stable(ish) countries.
We face global problems. Vast swathes of the world where humans could previously live well are now due to be drowned due to rising sea levels.
Other people are forced to move due to reasons like soil degradation, infertility, food/water shortages, extreme heat, war.
Domestically in the UK we have other crises such as a housing crisis, massive inflation, and long waiting lists for healthcare.
On one hand, population through migration could worsen these crises (more demand for housing and healthcare). On the other hand, many migrants will work in construction and healthcare.
Something tragic: we are building big luxury hotels and mansions for retired people. We are not building the affordable housing desperately needed.
How many houses sit empty? Second homes. Third homes. And yet anger and mistrust is directed towards people in crap HMOs.
Save me the high falutin condemnations of neo Malthusianism. We do live in material scarcity, and must redistribute and regulate as a matter of urgency. Of course we have overpopulation - see the housing crisis - but were second houses banned this could be amelerioted overnight.
I am not convinced that democracy as often understood can solve this. If referendums were held on these issues in Cornwall, Wales or the Highlands, so many of the voters would be rich "white flight" retirees from SE England unwilling to vote against their own material interest. The tipping point has passed in some places for such solutions.

A day or two before the referendum I was in a hospital in north London and in a brief lift conversation it became clear that a couple of fellow patients in the lift were persuaded there were too many foreigners in the uk and would not concede that without their foreign staff the nhs would greatly suffer

I suspect there are one or two of the residents in my workplace who might wish a couple of the carers weren't Romanian, there are certainly a couple of old-fashioned racists among them. But I imagine (maybe 'hope'?) they'd rather be cared for by anyone, than not at all. That is a reckon though, not something I've actually surveyed.

Odd that these people never gave a shit about the warehousing of drug addicts in hotels in seaside towns. Because that's been going on for decades. In places like Torquay it causes a lot of social problems because there's no support for these people and they're often dumped there from cities at the other end of the country so lots go back to drugs and then crime, and that creates a huge market for the gangster cunts who bring in the drugs.
