The American mass shooting thread

Assault weapons and the assault weapon ban were stupid.
It wasnt a ban on magazine fed semi automatic rifles.
It was a ban on semi automatic rifles that had too many scary features like bayonet lugs flash hiders folding stocks etc etc:rolleyes:.

Okay, not a mass shooting, but not sure where else to put this ghastly incident. I hope the fucker who shot at the kid gets a long stretch inside at least.

Black teen misses bus, gets shot at after asking for directions in Rochester Hills

Zeigler is due in court April 24 for a probable cause conference.
The maximum sentence for someone convicted of assault with the intent to commit murder is life in prison.
Damned by his own CCTV - you'd have thought he might at least have deleted that ...

Teen says he was asking for directions, but homeowner shot at him - CNN

It'll be interesting to see how that goes.

One thing gun nuts get right is the american criminal system lets you plea bargain away weapons charges so fuckwits like the above get to keep weapons and gang members who still do the majority of the murders in the US dont go away for longer.

When confronted by cops in a parking lot near Peoria during the 2016 incident, Tazewell County Sheriff's Office deputies said Reinking was convinced the singer ... was following him. He believed she wanted to meet him at a nearby Dairy Queen. He said Taylor Swift "climbed up the side of a building and Travis followed. However, when he reached the rooftop, Taylor was gone," according to the report.

An employee at a crane rental business in the same building where Reinking lived told police the suspect threatened him with a semi-automatic rifle during an argument.

He is believed to have broken into a nearby Tremont pool next during the June 2017 verbal rampage. Lifeguards said the scantily-clad trespasser was only wearing a pink women's housecoat and underwear when they ordered him to get out. He yelled at them and flashed his genitals, according to the report.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this man should not have had access to an assault rifle.

I think you're hunch is probably right on this one.

The killer is still at large, and assumed to be armed and dangerous. Either he had an accomplice or some other means of getting out of the area, he's holed up somewhere or he's topped himself and they haven't found the body yet. In any case, there were at least two other incidents before last July's white house incident that should have set off alarm bells that this man should not be in possession of firearms.

As the search continued, authorities in Illinois shared reports suggesting multiple red flags about a disturbed young man who liked firearms. In May 2016, Reinking told deputies from Tazewell county, Illinois, that music superstar Taylor Swift was stalking him and hacking his phone, and that his family was also involved.
Another sheriff’s report said Reinking barged into a community pool in Tremont, Illinois, last June, and jumped into the water wearing a pink woman’s coat over his underwear. Investigators believed he had an AR-15 rifle in his car trunk, but it was never displayed. No charges were filed.
Last July, Reinking was arrested by the secret service after he crossed into a restricted area near the White House, saying he wanted to meet Donald Trump. Reinking was not armed but at the FBI’s request police in Illinois revoked his state firearms card and seized four guns, authorities said. The AR-15 used in the shootings was among the firearms seized.
“There’s certainly evidence that there’s some sort of mental health issues involved,” Tazwell county sheriff Robert Huston said. But he said deputies returned the guns to Reinking’s father on the promise he would “keep the weapons secure and out of the possession of Travis.”Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron said Reinking’s father “has now acknowledged giving them back” to his son.

I'm not disputing there seems to be evidence of mental illness, but why the fuck were the authorities so casual about this guy who still seemed to represent a massive risk to the public? I mean they confiscated his guns, but then just casually gave them back to his father on the assumption he'd keep them away from his son. Well, the old bastard gave them to him, so he bears some responsibility for the murders as well.

Let's face it, if a person of colour anywhere in the US did any of those 3 things on record above that Reinking did, they'd at best be arrested and charged, at worst slaughtered by trigger-happy cops who shoot and avoid questions later. Give confiscated guns back to the guy's dad after he'd breached White House security? Yeah, get to fuck.

Incidently, those murdered were all in their early 20's, all POC. Racially motivated?

I'm already predicting the, "But, why did didn't the authorities help this poor, mentally ill white boy, who clearly needed help and had his whole life in front of him . . ." narrative, in which the victims are erased. Willing to take bets someone, somewhere is trying hard to dig dirt on the guy who disarmed the shooter as well. :(

that's the excuse gun nuts use it's not an assault rifle as it can't fire fully automatic:mad: hence assault weapons:hmm:.
missing the point wouldn't really matter if the nutters were armed with cowboy style Winchesters and 6 guns in most of these attacks a dozen bullets is plenty:(.
ar15's are cheap fast firing low recoil an SLR fn fal is heavy expensive and has to much recoil for namby-pamby Americans to deal with:) ideally you'd do what the rest of the world does and restrict access to all firearms to people who aren't insane or cant be trusted with scissors.

So, they apprehended a still heavily armed Reinking and arrested him. WTF though with offering bail for an alleged mass murderer? That's not, common.

At least they are considering charges against the father who gave the confiscated weapons to him.

Waffle House shooting suspect held on $2M bail

$2m bail via a bondsman probably means his family need to come up with around $200k?
No idea what their financial situ is, but these days there are GoFundMes and the lot, so not impossible. Sadly, there are probably folk out there who'll reach in their pockets to help him make bail if they follow the Sovereign Citizen / White Supremacist line. Not impossible it could be raised and he could walk. If so, I hope they've taken ALL the fucking guns off his Dad, just in case he thinks it's a good idea to give them back to him again!

Why he wasn't denied bail, even at £2m, is what seems odd - and pretty damned offensive to the victims and survivors, but hey.

A Democratic candidate for Congress in New Mexico made it abundantly clear he won't be getting into bed with the National Rifle Association in an expletive-laced television ad.

"F--k the NRA," Albuquerque City Council member Pat Davis says in a 15-second clip that was broadcast locally Friday evening.

"Their pro-gun policies have resulted in dead children, dead mothers and dead fathers."

Finally, some common sense gun policy.

Oklahoma governor vetoes bill to allow adults to carry gun without a license

The Republican governor of Oklahoma, one of the nation's reddest states, vetoed a bill late Friday that would have permitted adults to carry firearms without a permit.

The move by Gov. Mary Fallin marked a rare defeat in such a conservative state by the National Rifle Association, which strongly backed the measure.

and here is the scary part

The bill is similar to so-called “constitutional carry” legislation adopted in a dozen other states.

It would have authorized people 21 and older and military personnel who are at least 18 to legally carry a handgun, either openly or concealed, without a state-issued license or permit.
