i think a lot of you are taking the notion 'to protect and serve' as if the cops mean it. and that's where you're going wrong
i really think you need to examine your understandings of what law enforcement is there to actually do, because it certainly ain't protecting and serving. cops have killed FAR MORE people in the last twelve months than have been killed in mass shootings. yet for some reason and against all the evidence, you think they're supposed to be the good guys. in the past year there 1041 people have been shot and killed by police in america https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/investigations/police-shootings-database/ and no doubt there are many others beaten to death or otherwise killed by them.

That would work in Switzerland though.
Also almost every adult man, and quite a few women, get given an assault rifle by the government. And they love their privately purchased guns, almost every town having a range, including ones where they shoot over the traffic on dual carriageways.
And yet they don’t have active shooters every couple of days. Perhaps their Nazi gold hoarding culture is fucked up in other, less violent, ways.

Even though it's done through private insurance, Switzerland seems to have universal healthcare to a high standard without outrageous charges. Life expectancy is one of the highest in the world. The standard of living is also good.
There's also the lack of, for want of a better word a "Rambo" culture, or not one that I've noticed.
I think there are problems in Switzerland. I recall casual racism is pretty high and the chocolate isn't as good as it's made out to be. But it's a far less polarized society than the US is.

Sounds like the police got this badly wrong. Of course every firearms commander in every job has all of the information immediately to hand and always make the correct decisions in light of the complete information picture.
Active shooter drills - search to contact with containing fire basically- are fairly easy in training compared to other tactics, although not being shot at for real makes it a tad easier... I’m waiting to see how long the officers thought they had contained the subject in an empty room. ( In the UK if the subject had killed 20 kids and then gone into a room alone and the old bill stormed the room and shot him, they’d be quite rightly, looking at a manslaughter investigation.- it’s probably a little bit different in America).
One of the issues in the States, along with the massively fucked up gun culture, is the number of tiny untrained police forces. For every large metropolitan force with a well funded full time tactical team trained to SF levels for building entry they have about 50 tiny departments of less than 20 people earning less than McDonald’s shift manager. Add to that training consisting of Billy Bob taking them to the town dump and putting 100 rounds through their service Glock every year and 20 rounds through the 40 year old M16 in the boot that department got given as part of the Government’s hand me down scheme.
