The 6 Nations 2019 Thread

At some point some coach may want to consider playing an actual number 15 at number 15 against England. I'm not saying its the answer in itself but it might be a start.
Gatland wanted me to tell you that he's already right on that. We might even play a couple of them :p

Wales are going to play 2 number 15's at 15? Having 16 players on the pitch would certainly help I reckon.

In general I was a bit disappointed with some of the rugby this weekend, from a spectators perspective. I thought the games on Saturday were pretty ordinary despite being quite open and trys being scored. I was surprised how turgid Ireland were and that game was there for Scotland had they had a bit of composure.

I thought Wales looked very ordinary and I know Italy played well but this is a very poor Italian side. All a bit meh really.

Anyway, onwards to 2 weeks time.

Agree with you. I wonder despite public utterances if the WC isn’t on the mind?

Of course that doesn’t excuse the poor form of Murray and Sexton for Ireland. I’m not sure more game time is what they need at the moment.

1/2p has apparently passed his HIA. I wouldn't be surprised to see North drop to the bench and have 1/2p at 15 and Liam and Adams - both of whom can and do play 15 for their clubs, but not exclusively - on the wings. That would effectively neutralise England's kicking game while at the same time shoring up our defence out wide.

Just need to work out how to nullify 12 and 8 and, well, you never know....

My starting XV:

Smith, Owens, Francis
AWJ, Beard
Navidi, Moriarty, Tipuric
1/2p, Adams, Davies, Parkes, Anscombe, Williams T, Williams L

1/2p back for Wales and Vunipola out is certainly two pluses for Wales, but this is still England's to lose. You can put 3 full backs on the pitch, but I don't think England will telegraph their tactics. This is the decider though. Going to be a cracker.

England can't help but telegraph their tactics, their game plan is centred on 8 and 12, with Farrell doing the finesse.

Not to take away from the game their playing, but this is how Jones has wanted them to play from when he took over. Pulverise the opposition. In the same way as he wanted Japan to play a quick running game that suited their physical size.

I don’t think having 1/2p back there will make much of a difference. England will still kick high and long enough for their own backs to get up on him and isolate the shit out of him.

Feels like the other 5N need a big tactical shift to take on England, and I don’t think committing fewer players to the breakdown will be enough.

Problem with doing that against 1/2p is that you get it back with interest if you don't absolutely nail the accuracy and the chase (and there's no doubt that refs will be being 'made aware' of the legality of England's chasers as we speak). His kick returns are mahoosive and Liam can do the same. Ditto his positioning - he's still the best defensive 15 in the world and will likely be exactly where he needs to be to field the garryowens. Seriously, fuck up your kicking game against him and you can very quickly unravel.

I think it will make a significant difference.

When was the last time Halfpenny played a game of competitive rugby? Ring rust is a dangerous thing for a number 15, one mistake etc.

FWIW I don't think England will play a kicking match against Wales, the mere presence of either or both of Halfpenny and Liam Williams on the pitch will deter that. England didn't need a kicking game against Ireland and I think it only went that way against France because it quickly became apparent that there was enough space to build a housing estate behind the French line and they wouldn't have noticed it being built.

Gatland has form for bringing people back from long layoffs, in some cases 12 months, for crunch, high level matches. Don't forget 1/2p has been in full contact training, just with headaches. I don't think it'll be a factor.

I'm genuinely wondering if he'll ever play again. And all from a totally illegal, off the ball tackle that ref and citing commissioner shat out of censuring.

The ref bottling it is one thing, the citing commissioner doing so just proves what a total mess our blazers are making of the game.

premiership is on and super rugby highlights are up.

And you Welsh fans, Biggar limped off after 20mins against Sale
