Barcelona game is on behind closed doors.

“FC Barcelona condemn the events which have taken place in many parts of Catalonia today in order to prevent its citizens exercising their democractic rights to free expression.

“Given the exceptional nature of events, the Board of Directors have decided that the FC Barcelona first team game against Las Palmas will be played behind closed doors following the Professional Football League’s refusal to postpone the game.”

You can have them fuck off at the same as having the local police and the right wing Catalonia nationalists fuck off too.

My enemies enemy is not my friend.

Did I say it was then? I've got this funny aversion to my friends and family getting their heads kicked in, whoever the perpetrator.

The Catalan health ministry has provided more details on the 465 people injured by police violence.

216 were hurt in Barcelona, 80 in Girona, 64 in Lleida, 53 in Terres de l’Ebre, 27 in Catalunya central and 25 in Tarragona.

The two most seriously injured are in hospitals in Barcelona.

Around 15% (334) of polling stations were shut down.

Just had the surreal experience of watching of watching a violent government crackdown , rubber bullets et al on its "own" people expressing a wish for democracy ..

.....on a Russian TV channel..!

Where's the condemnation from the all loving all caring democracy upholding European Union which saves us all from civil conflict and violence?

Pretty shocking scenes. No going back from this now. Meanwhile...

This all reminds me so very much of the way the GC behaved prior to, and during, the civil war.

It reminds me of the way the police responded to protestors when I lived in Sudan. I never imagined I'd see such violence against the people here.

Years ago I worked with Bosnian war refugees, and I have/had Jewish refugees relatives. They told shockingly similar stories of police brutality.

But when the state supports this brutality, and those perpetrating it can be anonymous, with no possibility of repercussions, we cannot be surprised when we see this kind of violence.

if GC are just beating on people in broad daylight I wouldn't want to meet em after dark.

I have never had a problem with Guardia Civil, nor with National police. In Barcelona the Mossas have been total cunts to me. I watched helplessly as they beat a guy in a wheelchair just off Placa Real once. When I protested they ran to me with batons. I get loads of shit from Spanish Policia Local/Municipal (beaten for no reason whatsoever). IME, they are dumb as fuck, and totally unaccountable for much of their actions.

Today is sickening, and very exceptional, but totally inexcusable. Someone has to be held to account. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some politicians from all over Europe start asking for punishment in some way by the EU, or European Courts.

I have watched the number of police in Spain grow year by year. Apparently there are now 1 police for every 1000 residents. To put that into perspective; New York has 1 to every 10,000! I can no longer work in Spain. Hence, I am now in Portugal. It is bliss by comparison.

I imagine the EU are going to step in somehow, but as I mentioned earlier, that is probably exactly what the Spanish establishment wants.

Espanyol at Real Madrid tonight too. Not sure I'd fancy being an away fan there

Pretty sure Espanyol aren't exactly in favour of independence.

Mfd Espanyol are one of several Spanish football clubs granted patronage by the Spanish crown and thus entitled to use Real in their names and the royal crown on their badge. This right was granted to Espanyol in 1912 by Alfonso XIII and the club subsequently became known as Real Club Deportivo

This is pretty sick - to think that this country is in an alliance with spain is horrific - what will Theresa say?

Ok that's interesting I didn't really know that much about the history of the club I just thought people from Barcelona might get a lot of shit from fans and police tonight in Madrid

Many of those at the vote/demonstration today were not in favour of independence. They were in favour of democracy and not allowing Spain to dictate what they can and cannot vote on.

Espanyol cannot simply be seen as a 'Royalist' or even fascist team. They are as Catalan as Barcelona. The difference is more that Espanyol are the more working-class based team of Barcelona, whereas Barcelona draw more from the rich Catalan elite.

And many opponents of independence were not taking part as they see it as a nationalist stitch-up rather than a demonstration of pure democracy. That may have changed during the day.

I wasn't suggesting that Espanyol were fascist, only that their history suggests they are aligned to the spanish state, rather than the cause of Catalan independence.

And I know which side I am on right now.
