Spanish Political News

Interesting to see what is happening elsewhere in Spain. A quick Google of regional news shows very public support for the Spanish government. El Pais has a story explaining all the reasons why the referendum is illegal. Nothing is likely to happen after the votes are counted.

--/ El Pais is about as reliable as any Spanish media.

My gf just received a video from her sister in Barcelona from a polling station (via whatsapp). Police throwing women down a set of stairs, jumping down three steps at a time onto people's heads, pulling people out by their hair, random kicks to peaceful seated voters/protestors. Apparently this is a widely shared video, not taken by my sister-in-law. She is at a polling station in the countryside and the police are yet to arrive there.

this is only going to go one way. its gob smacking ineptitude by the spanish government. The catalans are not going to co-operate with madrid on any level. Presumably this will mean madrid taking direct control of the province and catalonias polticians arrested if they continue to operate as an "unofficial" authority - which they surely will. This in turn will craeate a situation where political violence against the spanish state is inevitable. Also inevetiable is the continuning fall back on populist nationalism by madrid. Aso - i imagine the basques are looking on with considerable interest/anger.

The fuckers could have just let the referendum happen (which may have rejected independence) than argued the toss afterwards. They have painted themselves into a corner they have created spains greatest political crises since the civil war.

For them - the integrity of the state and its laws must be upheld at all costs. Even if it involves beating and shooting people in the streets.

That sounds like weepiper's ones above.

My Basque friends are watching this with extreme interest and anger -- they've always reckoned Basque independence could only happen after Catalan independence.

(They were also extremely interested in Indyref and couldn't understand why Westminster would agree to it...)

There is a more dangerous 'unity' happening on the streets, where people wishing to peacefully vote, are being beaten and shot at, and on the internet, where the Spanish government is attempting to take control and remove websites. This is modern day fascism in a country that only removed it less than 50 years ago.

Fuck the Spanish government and the Guardia Civil troops they rode in on.
