I am watching Euronews, there's a lot of bangs going off, sounds like gunfire.

ETA - They've just switched to a different feed.

Sky news were filming right by it when it started - police had been kettled and resorted to rubber bullets to unkettle, then they carried on when people scattered. Well over the top. They weren't about to be lynched.

I was wondering about that.

What was the context on that occassion?
It was seven diff occasions - each time the catalan police fired them into someones eyes and took an eye out. The last one was the 2012 general strike. Thy do still have foam bullets which also take peoples eyes out. As does the water cannons they also have.

First rubber bullets fired in Barcelona since 2014 after the much more cuddly catalan police took out a final total of seven peoples eyes and were then banned from using them.

Journos are reporting this as them being banned outright in Catalonia rather than just by the Mossos.

Rubber bullets are supposed to be fired into the ground and bounce up into the legs:

Thanks. Sounds like it's a serious escalation, but not an unprecedented one.
