Saudi Arabia chosen to head human rights panel whilst sentencing citizen to crucifixion

i think 'being with Secretary of State Mike Pomeo' is the new 'i didn't write rape someone on my calendar so that means it didn't happen'

not that it really makes any difference but I did wonder if it might have been a 'who will rid me of this troublesome priest' rather than a genuinely directed hit. As in someone overhears MBS sounding off, seeks to curry favour with this, a hit gone wrong. Not that it matters to the reality obvs

can't see mbs doing that myself.

Aside from Trump giving it the big damage limitation over the last couple of days, has there been much international reaction from this? I've seen very little from the UK, France, Russia, China etc.

I mean compared to Skripal when there was the emergency UN session, and the joint statement, and 'diplomats' being expelled etc.

Not to sound naive but, this is mostly about billion dollar arms sales, and oil, right?

All this Khashoggi stuff is overlooking the grimmer side of Saudi Arabia - one death is a tragedy, thousands of deaths (yemen) is a statistic!
A new ruler takes charge and outwardly things look like they are becoming more liberal ie Women allowed to drive, go to sporting fixtures
Etc. Saudi Arabia is changing, so how far will its king go?
In practice, for doing these things they are being abused and anyone who has spoken out about these reforms has been thrown in jail
Saudi Arabia: 2 New Arrests of Activists
The Khashoggi incident has merely shown that the rulers that are not nice and not to be trusted, any reforms made made are just talk.

Well yes, it's always been about the money as far as Trump is concerned, he's made that perfectly clear already. Others are not having any of it though...

By the sound of it, Turkish intelligence may have known or suspected something in the diplomatic flight. Now it raises alarm about diplomatic baggage.

As an aside to the whole shitshow...

All this talk of sound recording etc., is this talk of a recording an admission by Turkey that they routinely bug consulates on their territory?

And something else.....
Much of this has to do with Donald Trump’s financial interest in Saudi Arabia, as well as the fact that Donald Trump and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu are obsessed with Iran, and are bent on going after Iran, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is their key ally in that aggressive endeavor.
Why Won’t Trump Condemn the Saudis? (Hint: It’s Israel. Also, Iran)

i thought there was some suspicion that the recording had been done by means of an apple watch tethered to his phone - which was left outside - presumably he was a bit suspicious/wary anyway and wanted to record his encounter.

if it is an admission that the Turks bug Embassies - which everyone who can, does - its surprising. certainly the Turks have big geo-strategic differences with KSA that they might want to use the recording as leverage on, but its a bit of a one time trick, and - to be frank - i don't see Erdogans government blowing a hugely valuable int source over a dead journalist, however insulted the Turks are by the murder.

Debunked AFAIK, Apple watch tethers to the phone via Bluetooth, so a range of about 5 feet, and certainly not through a number of very solid embassy walls.

Not sure how else the Turks can claim to have a (sound) recording?

Utterly obscene.

Over the summer, the Saudi Arabian government promised the Trump administration $100 million for the U.S.’s efforts to stabilize parts of Syria liberated from the Islamic State, a coup for Donald Trump, who regularly complains about other countries not coughing up enough money on defense. But despite the pledge, one official involved in Syria policy toldThe New York Times that it was unclear when, if ever, the money would actually materialize in American bank accounts.

But as luck would have it, just this past Tuesday, it did—the same day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Riyadh to get some answers on the fate of Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi journalist and dissident who entered the kingdom’s consulate in Turkey on October 2 and was never seen again. Some people have dismissed the notion that the two events are connected—“The specific transfer of funds has been long in process and has nothing to do with other events or the secretary’s visit,” Brett McGurk, the U.S. envoy to the coalition fighting the Islamic State, told the Time

as the eyebrow of cynicism meets the hairline of disbelief...

its simply not in any of the involved parties interests for this to blow-up into some 21st centery version of Sarajevo - KSA has been caught out and the new Crown Prince had his cough softened - Turkey is looking for some policy changes, the US is looking for some policy changes and some cash.

Turkey and KSA aren't friends, but they don't want to be enemies either. this event is both convenient and inconvenient, they appear to be working towards a 'solution' that gets all sides (well, KSA, Turkey and the US...) things they want at a price they can live with.

grubby, immoral, hypocritical - welcome to big boys (and girls) politics.

The Turkey regime is not whiter than white which would explain why they have not been allowed into Europe and nor should they be until they stop
torturing and executing people themselves. On the other hand, talk of recordings might have been made just to wind people up.
This is all about one person and it will no doubt blow over before much longer. lets not forget the bigger picture as far as both Turkey and Saudi Arabia
are concerned....
