Peterborough by-election, 6 June 2019

Yes I’ve known employers to keep jobs open by giving people unpaid leave so they can attend prison and then return to their job, obviously they don’t get paid, but do MPs if they’re inside (probably but hey ho)?

I don't think people convicted of crimes should automatically lose their jobs though.

No, but jail time inevitably means you can't carry out your job. Obviously a lot will depend what you're convicted for and the type of job you do.

But MP's should lose their job.

Part of the punishment is losing your job. A court will think a lot harder about sending down a
breadwinner than a low level recidivist.

The one year rule I can live with, Prescott could have been sent down ( in fairy land) for assault. Criminal acts of dishonesty though, not really compatible with law making.

But someone who loses their job will have to be kept somehow....unemployment benefit, free prescriptions etc. Who pays......

Its genuinely astonishing that an MP can go to jail and still be an MP. All the huffing and puffing about democracy regarding Brexit and the people of Peterborough have no representative, she cannot attend surgeries and she cannot attend Parliament, yet they are still lumbered with her. Incredible.

One of the reasons her legal team gave for her not standing down is that its her only source of income, oh that's alright then.

Democracy in this country remains a shambles and a sham, its pathetic how we're being lectured on the danger to democracy over various Brexit bollocks.
The recall petition would have started had she not appealed.

I'm not defending her decision to stay as an MP, nor the system's inability to deal in a quicker fashion, but at least now we have at least something to work towards her being removed. Before the Recall Act was passed, there was literally nothing save for the aforementioned 12'months rule brought in after Bobby Sands.

MP Fiona Onasanya, who lied about her speeding ticket, is trying to overturn her conviction for perverting the course of justice at the Court of Appeal today. She is representing herself and has turned up a court without any paperwork.

Appeal refused according to Twitter thread.

Yes, they refused to allow her to go to full appeal. He case seemed to consist of saying that she didn't pervert the course of justice - unsurprisingly the judges said 'is that it? No chance, bye'

Isn't (wasn't now, I guess) she supposed to be some kind of solicitor? You can't really appeal by saying the jury got the wrong verdict in the trial and expect the appeal judges to take your word for it. That's kind of basic stuff tbh.

Yep.

By way of an update, the appeal was rejected today. The Speaker of the House of Commons has triggered the Recall process. Peterborough Council will now need to open a maximum of ten polling places for signatures to be signed. Ten percent of the current electorate must sign the petition to remove Fiona Onasanya from the Commons.
