Peterborough by-election, 6 June 2019

I think to be an MP in these times you need to be narcissistic. It's expected that you're going to be mentally ill.

One of my friends is chair of Progress and he says much the same thing - in the Labour party anyway, whatever your political views, Corbynite left or Chukka-right you need to be a narcissist.

These times, or all times?

Selecting a career predicated upon the presumption that you're somehow fit to govern your fellow men seems to be something of a self-selecting basis for a cohort of malignant narcissists, full stop?

What I do know is that I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day.
Moses famously got done for 81 in a 70, whereupon he said:
Moses said:
Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you, but you hath not sent unto me your Notice of Intended Prosecution within the legally required fourteen days
Didn't work though, because it was a hire car.

Rather tedious waiting to have greatness thrust upon one, no?

Is this what it's come to? Labour are promoting seeming lunatics to the top ranks in a matter of a mere few years or even months, probably on the tenuous basis that they are somehow representative of ethnic minorities. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, are apparently 'following' (luckily mostly online) a theme spiv businessman with shady millionaire backers purporting to be a voice of the people. Hundreds of thousands tune in (again, fortunately mostly just online) to various hipster, eternal student, woman-hating alt-right posh boys, assuming they have a cutting critique of our admittedly cranky society (without having the self-awareness able to acknowledge that they are a product of that very crankiness), at least in part because of the idiots who now claim the mantle of the left tradition. If this site is anything to go by, much of the 'alternative' radical left is embroiled in arguments over who does or doesn't have the right to claim they are a woman (talk about 'first world problems'...)

Even the inner part of the city which I grew up in is now full of such abominations as 'gourmet fish and chip shops' (battered gherkin, anybody?). Fine, something had to be done, but it's fuck all to do with the people I grew up with, many of whom are still there and increasingly marginalised.

To any self-righteous left-liberals: fuck off in advance.

She was a whip and a PPS, hardly promoted to the "top ranks".

Conversely, she'd only been first elected in 2017, so while PPS might be dogshit, being a whip after less than a year as an MP hardly counts as being shoved off into the embarrassing misfits corner...

I accept that Corbyn doesn't have a huge pool of moral and intellectual titans to choose from, and that he's got to take what he can get, but fuck me, this is a proper Special One.

Just finished this. An excellent read and addresses many of the issues raised...

In what way?

Because the adverts I've seen for it at the train station strongly imply that it starts from the place that the political systems we have are fine. Moreover, the review by Rawnsley frankly makes it sound like a load of shite. And finally Hardman's background and politics hardly inspires confidence.

I can imagine she goes in hard on the SPAD-to-MP-with-no-real-job-first journey her partner john woodcock took in his route to Westminster. Or the private school and elite university route she herself took to be taken seriously politically.

It’s well argued from original interviews and sources and makes thd argument that the entire system is buggered.

You’ve obviously seen completely different adverts to the ones I have on the tube stations of London . And I realise that reading a review is a far better place to argue from than actually having read the book.

No body has claimed that the book isn't any good. We're asking you to justify your claim that it addresses the points raised on this thread. Something you still haven't done.

On what basis is it arguing that "the entire system is buggered"?

Her message to colleagues today. Doesn't look to me like she'll resign as MP voluntarily...

“As many of you are already aware, due to widespread media coverage, I was found guilty of perverting the course of justice. Although I vigorously maintained my innocence, the jury has decided that I am guilty.

“I campaigned for justice and for the interests of ordinary people throughout my entire working life to date, but it is this which has made both national and international press. The first jury was dismissed having failed to reach a decision last month but the second jury reached their conclusion within days.”

“Regardless of what you believe or suspect, the fact remains that I Fiona, sought to be the choice and voice of change — but this may now take a different path. More than ever before I am asking that you commit time in prayer for my family.

“In times like these the natural inclination of believers is to ask God why? I personally do not, because in my experience the answers are usually far above and beyond my reach. What I do know is that I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day.

“While God did not save them from a guilty verdict he did save them in it and ensured that their greatest days of impact were on the other side of a guilty verdict. Of course this is equally true of Christ who was accused and convicted by the courts of his day and yet this was not his end but rather the beginning of the next chapter in his story.

“Please pray that my family will find peace and strength in this perilous time through this guilty verdict.”

The utter fucking arrogance of the woman!

We ? We?? Do you represent a collective of political / literary critics now? Read it your self or don’t.

PoiE and killer b made similar points to myself.

You've posted a claim on a bloody discussion board, asking you to explain/defend it is hardly out of order. If you can't/won't fine but don't fucking whine.

You’re the one whining about a book you haven’t even read. “Oh no, someone has dared to write a book and sell copies and yet it doesn’t align exactly with the view of the world I happen to hold right now, oh woe is me”.

I'm not whining about the book, I've not made any criticism of the book. I'm asking you to back up your claim, to summarise the arguments made how the book "addresses the issues raised" on this thread.

wow. shes a bit special. delusional levels of entitlement and pathological lack of self awareness = career car crash.

MP convicted of speeding driver lie

from the bbc article

This will be a blow to the Labour Party - Fiona was one of their rising stars.

yeah. i am sure they are devastated to be rid of a bullshitting, corrupt, ego maniac liability with appalling judgement.

Why the fuck would anyone with a working set of taste buds, batter a fucking gherkin and deep-fry it? It's all about the crispness and coolness of the gherkin!!!

Doesn't look like Onasanya intends to step down quietly, according to the piece she's apparently written for today's Peterborough Telegraph.

From the Guardian:

Labour would actively seek to trigger a byelection in the Peterborough seat held by Fiona Onasanya if the party’s former MP received a sentence of less than 12 months having being found guilty of lying to police to avoid a speeding charge.

The party’s chairman, Ian Lavery, said Onansanya had been expelled from the party and that officials were waiting on the outcome of her sentencing, due later this month, before taking the next steps.

Onasanya would automatically lose her seat if she received a sentence of 12 months or more, even if some of it was suspended. But if she were to receive a shorter custodial sentence, a recall petition would automatically be triggered.

Lavery said Labour would “actively support” such a petition, which would need to be endorsed by 10% of the electorate in the Cambridgeshire marginal over a six-week period to trigger a Westminster byelection

Labour confirms expulsion of convicted MP Fiona Onasanya

Think any potential by-election here is a matter of time. It is such a marginal seat, almost a true bellwether, it could test the mood of a Brexit nation in many ways!

I don't think the Tories or Labour are in a rush for this by-election , they both know Brexit will dominate it .
