Looming Le Pen - French Election 2022

Have you seen what other crap was on offer? There’s fuck all for them to vote for, just one thing to vote against and it seems that fewer people could be bothered to even do that this time round.

What would you suggest as an alternative system?

All very civilised getting the speeches done well before bed time, based on a prediction from an exit poll, with the real results to come much later.

How amusing it would be if the real results were the other way around :) :(

Not all of the 42% who voted for Le Pen are racists, some of them are cunts.

not sure we can talk in this country ,we had a story today about the shadow chachallor flashing the pm to distract him

from a week of questions about party gate...

the press is quite simular to over here

Melenchon came very close to getting into the run-off. The way the system is designed, most people (or half, at least) will be voting for their less-hated option in the second round. That's not a failure of the system. It is just the system. If Melenchon had got into the second round, it would have been fascinating to see who had turned out to be the less-hated. I think he stood a chance of winning.

Thank fuck France hasn’t elected a far right nut job.

I’m sure there will be posters on here who will bang on about how this doesn’t serve ‘the working class’ but for once I can go to bed happy after an election result.

Apparently 68% of 18-24yo voted for Macron and 70% of >65yo also voted Macron. 65% of 'ouvriers' - workers voted Le Pen.
Yeah, many of those oldsters voted Macron in the first round. Of the youngsters, many were Melenchon voters who couldn't bring themselves to abstain. It is an oddity that Le Pen is the choice of specifically the middle-aged.

Do you think that there is a similarity to middle-aged people in the UK voting Brexit in the UK?

Probably. But old people voted even more strongly for Brexit. Think the cross-over from remain majority to leave majority was at about 45. By the time you got to 70+, a huge majority was voting to Brexit.

There are definite parallels between Melenchon's support and Corbyn's support. Though pretty old themselves, neither are/were popular with the old.
