*IRAQ: latest news and developments

Truly was history in the making seeing that statue topple.

But this business about putting American flag on his head and then taking that off and putting up an Iraqi flag round his neck - then taking that away - as crass as it's bizarre. The arab world will be pissed off with those images for sure

could have had the good grace to let the Iraqi people destroy Saddam's statue but instead they put a US flag on the statue!

Says it all doesn't it.

They had better pray that there aren't any snipers left in the square!

john x

They tried to knock it down with hammers.

so we helped them.

And i see a lot of iraqi/american people flying us flags in deerborn michigan.

There thousands greiving still and medical and social provision over the next few days and weeks means that there is very much a battle on now to prevent the deaths of ordinary Iraqis.

Yes i smile at the statue, but its not over, not by a long shot, in fact the trouble may just be starting........Red Cross Suspends Baghdad Work; Canadian Killed
Wed April 9, 2003 02:06 PM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Wednesday it had temporarily suspended humanitarian operations in Baghdad because the situation in the city was "chaotic and unpredictable."

"Given the chaotic and totally unpredictable situation in the city, getting from one place to another involves incalculable risks," the ICRC said in a statement.

And...........

In a separate incident, two Belgian doctors working in a Baghdad hospital told Reuters correspondent Khaled Yacoub Oweis that two Iraqi brothers in urgent need of medical treatment had died when the ambulance they were traveling in came under fire on Wednesday afternoon from what they said were U.S. forces.

One doctor, Geert van Moorter, said he confronted a U.S. tank commander nearby over the incident. "His reply was that it (the ambulance) could have been full of explosives," he said.

NO need.

And their were fights after the civil war ended as well.

But the ambassadar is probably the one in charge, if saddam is dead.

From BBC latest :
Wednesday, 9 April

1915: US Vice President Dick Cheney says talks will soon be held with exiled Iraqis and local leaders near the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriya to begin planning for an interim Iraqi government.
By exiled Iraqis, I take this to mean not exiled Iraq's in particular but the Dr Ahmed Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress.

whiterose - You are completely right to pursue this line. Despite their denials, its obvious that the Americans are trying to cower all of those jounalists who refuse to fall in line like the 'in bed with' mob. AJ has been uncle sams most vociferous critic. It cannot be accidental that they were attacked both in Iraq and in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan they were fortunate enough to be tipped off about the US attack that reduced their production facility in Kabul to rubble and nobody was killed. In Iraq they were not so lucky.

The military activity of the US in this respect and also in other respects, is deeply fascistic. The US leadership are political gangsters plain and simple.

Its a blood night in baghdad, people are getting payback and hanging saddams mionions on the lamposts.

As reported by ollie north.

Hanging your onions, pbman?

Looks as though the French have more influence than you care to admit...

...but the gesture stirred anger, and instead the troops worked to topple the statue

bbc

good shots of the toppling, see above post and link.

still a big  at the us flag business.

same topic from the guardian
They [the Iraqis] were making reasonable progress, and might well have toppled it after a few hours, but that would have been too late for primetime TV. The Americans were getting impatient, and their armoured vehicle lumbered up the podium steps with the elegance of a sexually aroused hippopotamus.

Yep. I already mentioned above I found it as crass as it was bizzare - obviously intended for the home audience back in the You-Us of A, but incredibly ill-judged, which a glance at the arab press this morning seems to confirm - it went down like a lead balloon.

from article in previous post but one.

[The sheikh had been given the job after a two-hour interview with a divisional commander, and was "very pleased" with the arrangements proposed by the British. An Arab journalist then suggested that the sheikh, as a tribal leader, was likely to promote members of his own tribe to key posts.

Colonel Vernon seemed surprised by this, and agreed that Britain would have to keep an eye on the situation.]

2 hours is less time than it takes to interview someone for a line managers job in a call center in the UK. Nice to see they are not making hasty decisions

Wasn't it said that the flag was flying on the pentagon 911 - lucky that particular vehicle carrying that particular flag happened to roll by - or do all vehicles carry one just in case??

AP is reporting the sacking of the offices of the French and Germans in Baghdad. Now they know what the Iraqis think of their betrayal.

mob mentality!!!

Baghdad is rapidly falling into anarchy.

The American troups must regain order and start policing these mobs.

According to the telly, most of the officiers have peace keeping training...the troups

UK firms seek Iraq contracts

Iraq needs massive rebuilding work
Top British companies are pressing the government to help them win a slice of the key contracts for rebuilding war-torn Iraq.
Following the collapse of the Iraqi regime in central Baghdad, the British Consultants and Construction Bureau (BCCB), representing more than 300 top firms, are meeting Whitehall officials about their concerns.

Tony Blair has already denied suggestions that American companies will profit out of the war by winning the valuable reconstruction work.

Officials from the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department for International Development will now try to offer further reassurance.

'Short-sighted?'

The contracts to rebuild Iraq's shattered infrastructure are expected to total more than £600m.

Some UK businesses feel they lost out in the first Gulf War, despite British forces playing a lead role in liberating Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion.

BCCB chief executive Colin Adams has said: "Many UK firms have a great deal of experience in Iraq, know relevant Iraqi professionals and thus have a great deal to offer.

"Ignoring this experience, especially if the idea is to rebuild the country quickly, would be not a little short-sighted."

American government agency US Aid is planning to fund moves to build five airports and set up a health service.

BCCB says it is natural for US Aid to give the lead contracts to American companies.

But it says there is a strong case for the US Government to allow British firms to bid for sub-contracts.

They are also pushing for the Ministry of Defence to look out for opportunities for British firms to help.

'No commercial interest'

Government officials are expected to tell BCCB on Thursday that up to half of the work will be sub-contracted out, with UK companies set to get a fair share.

Reports that American companies have been lined up for key contracts have fuelled suspicion among anti-war campaigners especially.

In a BBC interview last week, Tony Blair said: "All this stuff in the media about the Americans giving out the contracts - all that has happened is that American aid, legally under American law, is tied to American trade and commerce...

"There is not question of us trying to tie up British or American commercial interest with this."

No wonder they want a swift neat endding.

I honestly don't know how that man keep a straight face when he says these things.

and the lesson to be learned is....

if there are not enough jobs inside your own country, go destroy another one then you will have jobs for your citizens.

Job creation at it's finest!!!!
