*IRAQ: latest news and developments

will be interesting to see difference between what happens post war in Baghdad (under US control) and in Basra (under Brit control). just thought i'd point that out.

meurig, put a sensible link up, not some second hand anecdotes from your girlfriend on what the SAS may or may not do.

We've all read andy mc nabbs book.

Anyone want to know what my next door neighbour thinks on the matter?

missing us division?

What happened to the 4th (I think) infantry division that was supposed to come in via Turkey but was sailing around?

Its unloading in kuwait.

Probably 1/3 is unloaded now.

Indeed. Anarchy and looting in Baghdad as all semblance of authority (police etc.) seems to have disappeared. And Rageh Omar (BBC reporter based in that Baghdad hotel) was saying that his Iraqi minders are nowhere to be seen.

Will be interesting to see if the Iraqi information minister shows up this morning...

Cheers for that Zenskar, you actually inspired me to read the thing.

It reads as though Iraqis wearing ordinary clothes would qualify to be treated as POWs, whereas special forces wearing the same might not.

From Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, 75 U.N.T.S. 135, entered into force Oct. 21, 1950.

Part 1, Article 4

This appears to me to make it clear that there are circumstances in which combatants are not affored POW status, or protection by the Geneva Convention.

Stand corrected!

Scouser, I referred to General Sir Peter de la Billiére's autobiography - it's available from Amazon. I did not post "second hand anecdotes from [my] girlfriend". I mentioned why I had acquired knowledge of the special forces because I am not and never will be a military obsessed gun freak.

The scenario I outlined to Wizard61 was purely to point out that in certain circumstances it was inevitable that special forces would kill out of uniform. It appeared to work.

Do you have a point? Or do you just enjoy being a curmudgeon?

David Chater is being incredibly annoying on Sky TV and seems to have taken on the role of Bush's official spokesman..

"it's free.. we're liberated... fantastic to be out on the streets.. how does it feel?... any messages for folks back home?... how's the fighting been?... tough going?... what do you think of down-town Baghdad?... you're live on TV right across America and Britain...this is amazing..."

"this guy's got a gun.. think he's looking for snipers.. i'll just interrupt him and tell him he's on live TV.."

Iraqis standing in front of him with banner saying
Go Home Human Shields You US Wankers

Astonishing pictures coming out of the BBC in Baghdad as protestors try to pull down Saddam's statue...

Yes. I just said on another thread that I hope it comes down without hurting anyone.

Haven't you left it a bit late to worry about Iraqi civillians? Or is it that most of the crowd below are actually journalists and you are worried about their health?

You have become an irrelevance, john x.

Bugger I've got things to do but I can't miss this moment.

(re. Saddam in Russian Embassy - BBC reported that as well but with a dose of sceptism)

Shoving the Stars and Stripes on his head just isn't appropriate

(edit: they hastily pulled it down [the flag I mean])

The US marines..........

could have had the good grace to let the Iraqi people destroy Saddam's statue but instead they put a US flag on the statue!

Says it all doesn't it.

They had better pray that there aren't any snipers left in the square!

They replaced the Stars 'n Stripes with the Iraqi flag, but it fell off before the statue was pulled off.

The statue is down now, and the Iraqis are dancing on it.

An american soldier put the stars and stripes over SH's head, like a noose before a beheading. General amazement at american arrogance and inability to realise the significance of what they are doing. Someone below points this out. So stars and stripes is taken down and shuffled around in an embarrassed way.

Then the 'old' Iraqi flag is brought out by an onlooker. The same american soldier arranges it like some kind of neck-tie with the chain noose. From below it looks like he's prettifying the statue. He then goes up again and removes it. It's unclear why.

On the second attempt the statue finally falls to the very floor, and a crowd of excited Iraqi men dance up and down on it celebrating and screaming abuse towards SH.

A wide shot shows that there are very few people in the square. Guns off. The agricultural embassy's alight. No-one knows where SH is.

However, in spite of who toppled the statue, it is a significant and symbollic moment which will be shown over and over again on the news. Ordinary Iraqi's did initiate the attempt to topple the statue, the most moving bit was the taking of turns to sledgehammer the pedastal and the American action was clearly popular among the small numbers present. I bet they edit out the stars and stripes bit on tv, though.

There's a brief 'spring' in Bagdad, before the corporate vultures descend to carve up the spoils and take the oil money. I wish people in Bagdad had the future they imagine they will have post-Hussein. It is a moment to celebrate nontheless.
