Trump's Second Term: U.S. News and Politics

So Trump has signed an EO to withdraw from the WHO.

He says it’s because the WHO mishandled the Covid pandemic. Blah blah, that plays into the MAGA story,

Setting aside any argument about the efficacy of the WHO…

Being outside the WHO makes it easier for Trump do as he pleases with American health.

This strengthens US isolationism. It puts the USA outside the parameters of what’s acceptable and what’s needed for functional healthcare: if there are no externally set benchmarks he can make it up as he goes along.

I’m thinking of how America is failing at things like infant mortality, life expectancy etc. and how inconvenient that is for a Trump administration.

I’m thinking of how Trump will be enjoined to protect the health insurance dollar (“How do we make the Luigi thing go away…?”)

I’m thinking of how the attack on women’s rights is already causing an increase in unnecessary deaths amongst women.

Doing this also demonstrates America’s money muscle. It could be very bad for the WHO if American dollars aren’t available. What did I say earlier (on the other thread) about Trump pulling the dollar back from other places…? It’s tantamount to extortion. It’s a threatening shot about pulling out of NATO, the NGOs, other agencies.

They'll have to update this page pretty sharpish tomorrow, gonna be a fucking MAD day in the World Health Organization offices, and indeed throughout the United Nations. Who's next? Unicef? UNDP? Unesco?

Yes, I reckon he’ll use this to threaten to pull out of a bunch of other agencies. If America pulls out of UNICEF (for eg) It’ll punch a huge hole in the vaccination programme, and children caught up in a natural disaster or war will die in huge numbers.

He’s flexing his muscles, he’s power brokering.

“You can’t operate effectively without America, so you’ll have to allow me to operate as I choose”.

Interesting to see if Gates stays firm on supporting vaccinations; given the RFK appointment obviously not something the new admin backs. Astonishing a private individual is such a significant funder of the WHO.
