What seems so infuriating is that there is not a loud and clear message coming over about how UTTERLY BATSHIT what these people are doing is.

I have to commend Wired magazine on being about the only place (Daily Mirror did add well tbf) that literally had a headline saying 'Musk keeps repeating baseless lies about grooming rings'. That is literally what is happening.

But of course it sells more papers/ gets more clicks to lead with 'DEMANDS GROW FOR GROOMING INQUIRY' which lends legitimacy tp Musk's rantings.

It's profoundly depressing that we seem to be heading for a world where politics will lurch further to the right as parties see they might get election-winning ££££ from Musk and his ilk if they lick their boots and that the same media that screamed about TRAITORS over Brexit will of course roll over and cede 'sovereignty' to billionaire interference like actual traitors.

I'm not leaving Meta to 'virtue signal' - I'm leaving it because it says literally in their policy now that it's OK to call my child 'it' and 'mentally ill'.

Funny timing that they are now rolling out a way to get your chronological feed back on FB (though doesn't seem to have reached my account FWIW), so I'm glad they fucked the site up over 2 years ago so I'd almost stopped using it.

Will aim to download older photos (only going to do holidays, particular events) from before they automatically went to my google photos account, contact the 3 or 4 people I'm only on touch with there to make sure I've got up to date contact details elsewhere, then I'm deleting.

Can I just say that I absolutely despise the thought-terminating cliche that is calling shit "virtue signalling"? It's become a favoured rhetorical device for sociopaths and bigots to twist things that are actually good into something that's supposedly bad. It's a way to play the man instead of playing the ball.

I’m of the belief now that the “dialectic” has been so fucked by tech and Silicon Valley and all the robber barons that the only means left is to watch it all play out into hopefully something better. I peek in now and again, yep, still madness and walk away again. Don’t necessarily blame the people, blame the people who are incentivised to cause chaos, like MZ.

yes - or ask people for phone numbers. I'm not on Facebook or anything though (I dip into BlueSky occasionally and look at reddit), and only really regularly phone about four people. Aside from here I email/send cards to friends at Christmas and birthdays. I'm happy with that for keeping in contact.

Not really how Facebook works, or the purpose it serves regards friends. You don't expect your friend to call you at 3 AM with some musing, some wry funny take on a film they've just seen or tell you about an article you might find interesting. When it's good, this is what you go on to FB for as well as some local info, gigs, news from people / orgs you follow.

None of that works via email or phone, unless you want constant interruptions and a lot of boring low level admin.

If your politics and worldview are based on lies, then yes, fact-checkers are biased.

Of course there are legitimate discussions to be had about fact-checking on social media, how it's implemented, who does it, and so on. But that's not a discussion that Meta and other social media corporations are interested in having. They actually used the word "transgenderism" in their guidelines, good fucking grief.
