Hamas/Israel conflict: news and discussion

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday rescinded sanctions imposed by the former Biden administration on far-right Israeli settler groups and individuals accused of being involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, the new White House website said.
The website said Trump rescinded Executive Order 14115 issued on Feb. 1, 2024, which authorized the imposition of certain sanctions "on Persons Undermining Peace,

Security, and Stability in the West Bank."
Trump's decision is a reversal of a major policy action by former President Joe Biden's administration which had slapped sanctions on numerous Israeli settler individuals and entities, freezing their U.S. assets and generally barring Americans from dealing with them.

Along with 1500 unconditional pardons for the Jan 6 rioters. Congratulations Trump.

Lifting sanctions on settlers sends out a message that Trump is ok with attacks on Palestinians by Zionists.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, said Trump’s stand shows his “deep connection to the Jewish people and our historic right to our land

According to this Trump's team are considering temporary relocation of Gazans to Indonesia. I wonder if Indonesia has been consulted.

While managing the current phase of the deal and negotiating the next, Trump and his team also are contending with longer-term solutions. “If we don’t help the Gazans, if we don’t make their life better, if we don’t give them a sense of hope, there’s going to be a rebellion,” the transition official said.

The question of how to rebuild Gaza remains, as well as where some 2 million Palestinians can be relocated in the meantime. Indonesia, for instance, is among the locations under discussion for where some of them could go, the transition official said.

Even the question of whether Gazans would be willing to relocate is up in the air. The idea of relocation is deeply controversial among Palestinians and fellow Arabs. Many believe that relocating would be the first step in Israel forcing them off their land.

However, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted the report.

“The government of Indonesia has never received any information from anyone, nor any plans regarding the relocation of some of Gaza’s 2 million inhabitants to Indonesia as part of post-conflict reconstruction efforts,” Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Roy Soemirat said.

“Indonesia’s stance remains unequivocal: Any attempts to displace or remove Gaza’s residents is entirely unacceptable. Such efforts to depopulate Gaza would only serve to perpetuate the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and align with broader strategies aimed at expelling Palestinians from Gaza.

Even if in the vanishingly unlikely event that both the Indonesian government and the Palestinians agreed to such a thing you can guarantee the Palestinians would never be allowed to return which I would pretty much guarantee is behind this 'idea'.

Fun fact. Indonesia is largely Java. Java's population is 153 million people (and expanding) in 51,000 sq.mi. For comparison, Russia's population is about 146 million, in 6.6 million sq.mi.

I don't think Indonesia needs 2 million Palestinians.

Not even 'temporarily' (my arse).

World's a bit weird today.
