Glastonbury 2009

Sorry to all the urbanies I wanted to meet but didn't, my phone was all delayed in getting text messages and whatnot. Also I still couldn't find my way back to the Daisy Cow field or wherever it was I was camping on my own so was a bit scared of going off on my ownsome and ending up having to sleep in a bin or something.
I'm wondering if it's worth getting some kind of Orange sim card if I go next year as they have extra transmitters don't they? I'm with 3 mobile so I didn't stand a hope, really

not extra transmitters. they provide the only transmitter, so orange users get priority.
Oh, I see. So there wouid be a benefit in getting an orange sim?

My mate apparently got a flat battery and the security guys asked some passing blokes to help push her car to bump it. Turned out to be Prodigy :D

Yeah that's what JTG said, it's quite annoying as we all kept losing eachother and couldn't get through to eachother's phones at all, ever.

I gave up in the end. I think penni got a text I sent her about 7 hrs later. Either that or she was pished and passed out in a bin somewhere :hmm:

Well I had a fabulous time!

Left site at 4pm, got back to my old stamping ground Hackney by 9, big jam on A303

Have much to say - more later - I am staying with Miss-Shelf and I haven't seen her for nearly 2 years. Mucho catching up to do :D

But may I just say mysterygirl and little miss hissyfit are darlings :)

I watched a bit of the Gaga yesterday and for her track 'Paparazzi' it looked like a bit of lip was peeking through.... I fair blushed I did

I didn't see any lip on the big screen but her outfits were very tiny. I think I counted 4 costume changes during her set. :D

gushing over jacko? must have been a different festival to the one i was at which saw the slightly dampened mood of thursday night lifted by news of his departure.

I didn't see many people that upset tbh. The jokes started pouring in about 10 minutes after the beeb told us he was possibly dead.

So I didn't see much on friday because I was so fucking upset about my stuff and some creep being in my fucking tent and the pissing fucking rain I was set to fuck off home again.

We heard NERD but didn't venture further than the cider bus to watch them. :D

Lady Gaga was fucking brilliant-really really good live, amazing voice and everyone was having a wicked time

The Ting Tings after were great too and then we went down and watched Neil Young who was a lot better than I was expecting and I really enjoyed him. The atmosphere was great friday night and that really helped after a poo day. We couldn't be arsed to do anything else so we went to see Slumdog Millionaire which I loved. The cinema tent is really fucking stupid though because there are about 3 places you can sit to avoid having a fucking pole in the way.

Saturday-I missed Broken Family Band which I was annoyed about but caught the end of Tinariwen who I loved.

Saw Spinal Tap but didn't really get it as I've never watched the film-just slept everytime Magic Sam's put it on.

We spent the rest of the night at John Peel tent but missed Bruce-I think we were queuing for burritos.

I fucking loved Florence and the Machine-she's completely bonkers and scared the shit out of me when she started climbing stuff in very high heels.

White Lies were brilliant. I hadn't really noticed them before but everyone else seemed to know the words to every song and I felt a bit old and rubbish.

I saw Jarvis which was good but I did feel a bit meh. I don't really know much of his new material and some of it felt like he was stuck at 25 and is still writing about trying to get off with girls. No mention of Jacko and not a snippet of a Pulp song or even a mention of the band which I understand and all that but I would have liked maybe one Pulp song.

Sunday was fucking great. Missed Quo cos Magic Sam took some stuff back to the car and I was washing my skanky hair. :D Those lush shampoo bars are brilliant btw.

We missed some of Art Brut because everything had been shifted forward but they were fucking great, very funny and I felt dead chuffed for them that I was surrounded by people at the front that knew the words to every single song. Not bad for a timid little lad from Poole who would never say boo to anyone.

The Rockingbirds were really good but there was a very small crowd for them. :(

We stayed at the Park all afternoon and saw Terry Reid who I thought was fucking shite. It was like an hour of the Bergerac theme tune and he was wearing tight white jeans which disturbed me. :hmm:

Tunng and Tinariwen were absolutely amazing and one of my weekend highlights. We missed most of Nick Cave because we didn't want to leave-I will definitely be checking out both bands stuff now.

There was someone famous sat near us and I stared at him for about 2 hours trying to work out who he was. I even sent a pic to madamv but she didn't know him and called me a stalker. The cheek of it.

He looked a bit like Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips, wore a brown cord jacket, was hanging out with his ridiculously cool friends and a few people took pics of him. Pretty sure he's in a band and will post a pic if I can get it off my phone. It's really bugging me.

Blur were bloody great. I was very surprised they did country house because it's shite. Damon looked shell-shocked all the way through and he proper cried which I thought was very sweet. He just seemed really shocked at the size of the crowd. Everyone singing along to Tender was a real goosebump moment imo. I must admit I did get a bit of grit in my eye during To The End and the Universal.

as are you, I had a lovely time in your company and Eldest hissyfit really wants to keep in touch with your lovely daughter

:)

East 17 were the early hit of the festival. All day I overheard people discussing seeing them.

I chuckled when some urbs (some of whom have already confessed ;) ) suddenly left the bus and marched at double quick time to see them... as did, it seemed, about half the site. Rescheduled I presume due to H&S scare. Would have seen them myself but for work. Possibly the frstival's best comedy booking in recent years.

Other goodies... Friendly Fires being a good jig about and pulling in the youngsters the festy needs. And they pulled out the stops, loads of live musicians doing the stuff their 'leccy boxes would normally do. Skeleton Boy has been a bit of a pop anthem for me in the run up and they didn't disappoint.

Eatstatic absolutely hammering it in the Glade.

Meeting Gerry1Time... What a damn cheery face to have pop in to info.

Dancing with Derv, Wiskey, JTG et al at the Specials. The moment we all seemed to get into festival vibe rather than be dull 'workers'.

Me being a bit pissed when the aforesaid popped in on our boozeathon at Avalon bar in the run up. Oops. Still, I didn't pass out in a portaloo this time.

Briefly meeting newbie... I'm always in awe of veterans.

Being befriended by the lock ups crew who dominate our designated field. For a damn organised and trustworthy bunch, they're not short on the lets-get-monstered factor off duty. Last night at the campfire was cool.

Tort, who's festival wardrobe does now seem to justify his staying in the campervan 'enclave'. Fur (fake) coat was it mate? Not letting the side down there.

A bloke with a prosthetic leg - just a pole from knee to trainer - happily marching across the Other Stage area, wearing a T-Shirt saying "I do all my own stunts".

Sunflower hatted plod getting positively mobbed up in the Park. "Let's get our pictures with these coppers" type thing, every second yard.

Falling asleep on a downed Angus Watt flag in our humble backstage area. Dozing on silk, made by the festy flag man... lovely.

And last but not least, absence of moany 'not as good as it used to be' people. I always wish they'd piss off, and between 2008 and this year, it seems they have.

Can we do 2010 in - ohh, say - this August? :)

One of the best , enjoyed it so much , the mix of rain and sun made me appreciate both . Very hard to pick out highlights but seeing Broken Family Band playing in front of about 20 people in the Dirty Boots tent was unique , I chose to see the Horrors instead of Neil Young , it was a tough call but really enjoyed them . The Specials didnt work for me , I thought Terry Hall looked like he wished he was somewhere else , Madness on the other hand Rocked. The single performance for me was Regina Spector , playing the piano with one hand and a kitchen chair with a drumstick with the other , she was bang on form and left me wanting more.

But what happened to the urban meetz - I turned up at the cider bus twice but didn't see any urb flags :(

Possibly partly my fault. Had made a sign for the meetups, but ended up rescheduling my shows to the weds and thursday evenings, so was late for the weds meetup and missed the thurs one, sorry!

Awesome to have met some more urbanites though, lovely people all of you, sorry i didn't get to see more of you all. Ended up getting carried away with trying to gather features round the site and all that.

Highlights for me were;

Easy star all stars doing dub side of the moon in dance east - truly awesome set, wanted to see that for so long

Interviewing various types, Kevin Eldon, Marcus Brigstocke, Miles Hunt, Nick Clegg and this awesome guy called Bill who's worked for Michael Eavis since he was 16 and designed the current pyramid stage.

Getting served a pint by Paul McGann in backstage Jazz, he actually knows his ale really well and came up with some good recommendations.

Seeing Spinal Tap finally.

The lovely friendly people at backstage cabaret and backstage shangri-la, really helpful.

And of course all the awesome people at Worthy FM. Am now shattered and my feet are falling apart, but had such an awesome week.

My head is still weird. About an hour after i get back im always left thinking 'should i really have been driving?'.

Lot more hip hop around this year then previously. I got to see roots manuva, dizzie rascal, q-tip, NERD and even a bit of the streets alhtough they were toss. Also seemed to be a fair few beat boxers on lil random stages. I approve entirely.

Twas a very good glastonbury, few too many people for my liking but other then that no complaints at all, everything looked cool, the line up wasn't bad either. Good times.

Good to run into those of you i saw shame i didnt run into a couple of people but what can you do!

I reckon king blues was my highlight. They seemed so chuffed that anyone showed up let alone went fairly mental, best i have heard em play as well, they were really tight and the soundman desrves a medel, twas dead on.

yeh, this^^^ Country House? but why?
I always thought it was just me who thought The Universal was their best song but it turns out i'm far from alone - they saved it to the very, very end and it was fantastic

The Specials didnt work for me , I thought Terry Hall looked like he wished he was somewhere else.

That's kind of his thing, expecting him to smile or leap about would be like trying to get Neville Staple to stand still. They were fucking fantastic by the way, flawless non-stop awesomeness from one end to the other.

gosh, why?

I came looking for you when I thought you were on shift but you weren't.

hits

waking up to people yelling Michael Jackson's dead and laughing and heckling and the running theme that produced
the fantastic singing from the Ray Davis crowd
a bloke microlighting into the festival over our heads when we were on the hill above the Rabbit Hole
dawn monday morning
a fine meal at the Bedouin tent
walking through the kids field, what a magic place
carefully selecting the best place to sit down and then finding I'd sat right beside an old mate then someone else I'd failed to catch up with coming on stage.. I was obviously meant to be just there, just then :)

misses

none really, I had a great time, but I didn't get that very special feeling of a really big crowd sparking off a performance. I'm sure it happened, but not while I was there. tbf I only really went to see the Specials and Springsteen but didn't think either of them produced more than some polite applause before people realised there was something interesting to do somewhere else. Springsteen lost his huge audience bigtime, you could feel his shock when no-one took up the words for The River as he expected, and I never once heard the whole crowd roar.

Just catching up on some of the stuff mr madz sky+'d for me. I've put the kids to bed, changed my bedding, let the dog out for a pee and fucking Springsteen is still warbling on

He clearly doesn't live by the maxim of 'leave them wanting more' :D

He was genius, full of ego and when your band sounds as good as his did! he can warble on all he likes! superb stuff from brucey!

not putting you in the same boat, but when i did finally get up to see him (watched the king blues first after work at the queens head). nipped over to springsteen he sounded fooking amazing. what a voice, what a true rock n roll showman! anyway, to the tits that were booing round about me.... why didnt you all fuck off to another gig? its a big fucking place... its not bruce springsteeens fault you dont know all his songs to dance to, sing to and all that.... there was a lot of people just wantin a singalong when they never knew the artists music.. ach, just my wee mini rant.

I caught about the last hour of the show and loved every minute of it... his voice is something else.. Born to run made my weekend, never thought id get to see the boss live. oh as did the new york house disco in trash city on friday night, as did the glade on thursday night, as did the stone circle on tues niight........... sadly sunday night at glasto was a little of a let down. tho we had free beer, time we went to get anywere it was just the wanky silent disco that was going to be left open.........

Madness. madness i tell you :)

anyways, had a ball of a weekend.... im still blurry. gotta get it together for work....

anyone catch boycey up in shangra la on saturday night at 3am? i was busy with a transvestite at the time :)

I agree with newbie, tho never saw a whole crowd roar thang. including at the prodigy... but im sure it happened.. somewere.. ... its all relative tho innit. if it had been radiohead or coldbore on the mainstage i wouldnt have went near it, i rarely do go near the main stage at all anymore if i can help it...... i did miss status quo... but from the video footage i watched it looked as tho they got the main stage rockin.

ALso rolf harris filled the jazz world stage....... the paths leading into it were totally jammed right up. :) cult kindof legend stuff at glasto aint he.

Im sure I heard the crowd go a little bit mental during blur,Lily Allan and kasabian but hey, everyones idea of a roar is different.
I didnt think any of the acts compared with the verve last year but to be fair I took the kids to watch the Black eyed peas rather than stay for the end of Blur so I cant really comment properly

That Rolf thing was fucking crazy, we got out of there because it was getting a bit scary.

We went to the Pyramid and Tinariwen played to a fairly empty field. Surely they should have known this and swapped them over?

I think Blur definitely had that buzz, everyone around me was absolutely loving it and we were quite far up the hill.
