Well we had a fabulous week
It was my 14th and Deb's 15th and we will NEVER get jaded about Glastonbury!
So nearly started distastrously this time though, the Friday night (19th) before we were due to leave for Glastonbury Town on Saturday, and Deb's alternator is suddenly fucked. Getting the car fixed on a Saturday morning, when the garage was only open for four hours, threatened to be a mission, but we got well lucky with the (diamond!) garage bloke only having three MOT's lined up, and able to get the part within 45 minutes. So we were on the road around midday. He deserved his tip!
Very nice to chill in Glastonbury Saturday and Sunday with paolo and Eva Luna (she was staying in the Town only, but she was starting to get excited about being a possible Festival Virgin in 2010!). We saw an ace little reggae band in the Riflemans Arms who were so good that we decided we were going to see them again at Small World Wednesday night (and we did, nice, can't remember name though ...), as they'd be one of the few bands playing that early ....
Up the Tor for the Solstice sunrise Saturday night was a lovely experience, we were only JUST warm enough .... I think it was the cold rather than the Hecks Cider (£6:99 for several litres of local loveliness from Street) that kept us awake ....
Sunday was to be chilling day, and
only for chilling day. With some beer too!
The sheer excitement and anticipation of heading sitewards on Monday was the best. We intend to head in even earlier (Saturday) next year though!
Almost everything happening for us Monday to Monday was fabulous, the only exceptions the heavy rain Thursday night and the even heavier and more thundery downpour 2 am Monday morning at the end.
But it was generally so warm, that what limited and partial mud there was dried out pretty quickly. The sunniest days were Monday of arrival, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, along with all day of the Monday we left (at 8 pm!) -- Monday was a true start of heatwave scorcher.
So with so much positivity and so little mudgloom that's probably it from me about the weather ..... this year!
A lot of the general site highlights came from random discoveries wandering about the site Monday to Wednesday. Piano Bar in top corner of Dragon was impressive although we never got to see any entertainment there.
Green Fields (Green Crafts and Undles Ground especially) were as ever truly beautiful, and everyone who goes should make the stiff climb up to the big hill above the Park, views from there would take anyone's breath away.
We weren't able to get into the SE corner properly until Wednesday, but the efforts made by Arcadia (re-using and improving Trash City's fire breathing equipment from last year), and Shangri La especially, were astonishing. Sad those areas get so packed late on after the fest has truly kicked off but that's inevitable because the reputation of those areas as a proper spectacle is well justified IMO. I cant wait to see paolo's and Tort's photos ...
Music thumbs up from me go to these ... not particularly in order ...
Specials, Pyramid, Sunday -- I had been a bit grumpy about not getting to see them on their tour, and we had no guarentee we'd be free from our shifts for them. But we were and they skanked good.
Madness, Pyramid, Sunday -- marvellous. Tis great when you know ALL the words ....
Quo, Pyramid, Sunday -- they were
just right for that time on Sunday, waking everyone up, and I
will not hear any criticism at all. Well except for Rick Parfitt's voice, which is rubbish compared to Francis Rossi's. Unexpectedly moving moment during their only slow and only remotely political song, In the Army Now. Loved them (not having seen them since 1984!) and during the fast stuff I had no choice at all but to 'get down' in embarassingly old style rock stylee. And our mate from Cardiff** had a Quo flag!
(**Martin Ashford from efests, real Glasto veteran, first went when it was an unofficial Travellers' fest at Worthy Farm in 1978
)
But he's off to the Glade next month so ha!
Broken Family Band, Other Stage, Saturday -- well worth getting up for early. Set far too short, but we'll see them again at Beautiful Days.
The True Legend (R, TM) that is Rolf, JazzWorld, Sunday -- we were very lucky as we had backstage access to the side of the stage, prime view. We were well aware how packed the JazzWorld field was though. I agree he has to go onto the Pyramid next time, but his performance on Saturday really justifies that. Wonderful entertainer and a real Glastonbury lover (I went to see him up at the Avalon a few years back and could get nowhere near, even then it was obvious how well loved he is).
Ray Davies, Acoustic, Friday night. Was this worth missing a good chunk of Neil Young for? Probably not when objectively looked at, but I have only seen Ray once, nine years ago, and I gambled on a good supply of greatest hits. Gamble paid off, nothing but classics to be heard, and the crowd LOVED it.
Neil Young, Pyramid, Friday -- the limited early bit of his set we caught made me sorry to leave for Ray Davies. That was a real dilemma for me, as Neil kicked off in such attention seizing style. I heard from several who stayed that he kicked proper arse by the end and offered plenty of well known oldies too. Can't wait for the recorded coverage ....
Steel Pulse, JazzWorld, Friday -- only caught some of this, as the Specials were due, but well worth it.
Pronghorn, Blazing Saddles stage in the Theatre/Circus Field, was that Friday? Reminded me of how glad I am to return to Endorse It this year.
Amadou and Mariam, Pyramid, Sunday -- lovely.
Wonder Stuff, Avalon, Saturday night -- we missed Bruce for them and for lots of other top fields wandering (partly to avoid the madness and crowds of further down), all worth it IMO.
Three Daft Monkeys, Glade, Sunday -- but we're monster fans of them so there.
Weird String Band, Tadpole Stage, Sunday -- entertainers par excellence, love their fiddle, double bass and acoustic guitar versions of pop clasics like Don't You Want Me Baby! (that one was a real random 'wandering past' discovery too)
We missed a fair few acts we really wanted to see.
Jarvis a bit of a regret but less so now I hear he did not manage even one Pulp number.
But missing both Nick Cave and Blur on Sunday night were
real minuses, especially as the Prodigy on the Other Stage (where we were on shift at Info) only lasted an hour and ten minutes. They were excellent, but bad value timing wise.
More tomorrow!!
