Glastonbury 2009

I can remember EVERYTHING. Well except Nick Cave. I don't know what was going on there. His voice had a weird affect on us and we all had to lie down in a big pile.

Ace photo.

wow!

anyone catch boycey up in shangra la on saturday night at 3am? i was busy with a transvestite at the time :)

not to my knowledge- i had a ball all the same. apparently the guys running the place were worried i was too munted to play but were then shocked when i smacked it :cool:

i'm crossing my fingers to get a bit of kit in there next year thereby negating the need to do 5 days backbreaking work to get in free.

did anyone check our handy work in the greenpeace field? i spent 2 days straight soldering circuit boards and led arrays for the runway lights and another 2 days boarding up the out of control tower. :)

What a Fantastic Glasto, one of the best ever. Got dragged to see Lady Gaga and she put on an amazing performance which ended up the one and only time I saw anyone at the main stages. Spent the majority of the fest in the theatre, circus, trash city and arcadia areas and saw some fantastic acts, thie highlight being Mundo Jazz who put on a 2h hour set sunday night till 2am, finishing just as the heavens opened.

Felt quite tearful leaving this year, it was that good.

What an ace event. Everything from decadent burlesque in Trash City to beautiful folk in the healing fields to little bands lighting up the small stages, and let's hear it for Jarvis, whose set was astonishing - and Gong, who were most definitively in tip-top top form. Ace six days, some of which I'm beginning to remember now!! :)

Being on the Early Shift for Oxfam has opened my eyes to another side of the festival I didn't know existed. 10 days there was more than plenty. Looking forward to next year. Could never be a punter again.

My highlight was Ed Byrne , Phil Kay, Phil Nicholand Brendon Burns. On when Brucie was playing.

I've never laughed so hard for so long. Brendon Burns brought Ed Byrne out and they did some comedy ad lib at the end.

Yeah we did. I was well impressed by all that, that display got a lot of attention

Would have liked to have met up with the urban contingent but I was working too hard/ feet hurt too much - was working on the noise control team. You might have seen me wearing a headset with a mic, stomping away at the G-stage or at the glade when eat static was playing... Will be uploading all my photos soon. Link to follow :)

LOL I said to Pennimania I think Im the only person in the world who could power nap through Nick Cave and the bad seeds at full volume... and I hadnt consumed any drugs either:D

Well we had a fabulous week  :)

It was my 14th and Deb's 15th and we will NEVER get jaded about Glastonbury!

So nearly started distastrously this time though, the Friday night (19th) before we were due to leave for Glastonbury Town on Saturday, and Deb's alternator is suddenly fucked. Getting the car fixed on a Saturday morning, when the garage was only open for four hours, threatened to be a mission, but we got well lucky with the (diamond!) garage bloke only having three MOT's lined up, and able to get the part within 45 minutes. So we were on the road around midday. He deserved his tip!

Very nice to chill in Glastonbury Saturday and Sunday with paolo and Eva Luna (she was staying in the Town only, but she was starting to get excited about being a possible Festival Virgin in 2010!). We saw an ace little reggae band in the Riflemans Arms who were so good that we decided we were going to see them again at Small World Wednesday night (and we did, nice, can't remember name though ...), as they'd be one of the few bands playing that early ....

Up the Tor for the Solstice sunrise Saturday night was a lovely experience, we were only JUST warm enough .... I think it was the cold rather than the Hecks Cider (£6:99 for several litres of local loveliness from Street) that kept us awake ....

Sunday was to be chilling day, and only for chilling day. With some beer too!

The sheer excitement and anticipation of heading sitewards on Monday was the best. We intend to head in even earlier (Saturday) next year though! :D

Almost everything happening for us Monday to Monday was fabulous, the only exceptions the heavy rain Thursday night and the even heavier and more thundery downpour 2 am Monday morning at the end.

But it was generally so warm, that what limited and partial mud there was dried out pretty quickly. The sunniest days were Monday of arrival, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, along with all day of the Monday we left (at 8 pm!) -- Monday was a true start of heatwave scorcher.

So with so much positivity and so little mudgloom that's probably it from me about the weather ..... this year!

A lot of the general site highlights came from random discoveries wandering about the site Monday to Wednesday. Piano Bar in top corner of Dragon was impressive although we never got to see any entertainment there.

Green Fields (Green Crafts and Undles Ground especially) were as ever truly beautiful, and everyone who goes should make the stiff climb up to the big hill above the Park, views from there would take anyone's breath away.

We weren't able to get into the SE corner properly until Wednesday, but the efforts made by Arcadia (re-using and improving Trash City's fire breathing equipment from last year), and Shangri La especially, were astonishing. Sad those areas get so packed late on after the fest has truly kicked off but that's inevitable because the reputation of those areas as a proper spectacle is well justified IMO. I cant wait to see paolo's and Tort's photos ...

Music thumbs up from me go to these ... not particularly in order ...

Specials, Pyramid, Sunday -- I had been a bit grumpy about not getting to see them on their tour, and we had no guarentee we'd be free from our shifts for them. But we were and they skanked good.

Madness, Pyramid, Sunday -- marvellous. Tis great when you know ALL the words ....

Quo, Pyramid, Sunday -- they were just right for that time on Sunday, waking everyone up, and I will not hear any criticism at all. Well except for Rick Parfitt's voice, which is rubbish compared to Francis Rossi's. Unexpectedly moving moment during their only slow and only remotely political song, In the Army Now. Loved them (not having seen them since 1984!) and during the fast stuff I had no choice at all but to 'get down' in embarassingly old style rock stylee. And our mate from Cardiff** had a Quo flag!

(**Martin Ashford from efests, real Glasto veteran, first went when it was an unofficial Travellers' fest at Worthy Farm in 1978  )

But he's off to the Glade next month so ha!

Broken Family Band, Other Stage, Saturday -- well worth getting up for early. Set far too short, but we'll see them again at Beautiful Days.

The True Legend (R, TM) that is Rolf, JazzWorld, Sunday -- we were very lucky as we had backstage access to the side of the stage, prime view. We were well aware how packed the JazzWorld field was though. I agree he has to go onto the Pyramid next time, but his performance on Saturday really justifies that. Wonderful entertainer and a real Glastonbury lover (I went to see him up at the Avalon a few years back and could get nowhere near, even then it was obvious how well loved he is).

Ray Davies, Acoustic, Friday night. Was this worth missing a good chunk of Neil Young for? Probably not when objectively looked at, but I have only seen Ray once, nine years ago, and I gambled on a good supply of greatest hits. Gamble paid off, nothing but classics to be heard, and the crowd LOVED it.

Neil Young, Pyramid, Friday -- the limited early bit of his set we caught made me sorry to leave for Ray Davies. That was a real dilemma for me, as Neil kicked off in such attention seizing style. I heard from several who stayed that he kicked proper arse by the end and offered plenty of well known oldies too. Can't wait for the recorded coverage ....

Steel Pulse, JazzWorld, Friday -- only caught some of this, as the Specials were due, but well worth it.

Pronghorn, Blazing Saddles stage in the Theatre/Circus Field, was that Friday? Reminded me of how glad I am to return to Endorse It this year.

Amadou and Mariam, Pyramid, Sunday -- lovely.

Wonder Stuff, Avalon, Saturday night -- we missed Bruce for them and for lots of other top fields wandering (partly to avoid the madness and crowds of further down), all worth it IMO.

Three Daft Monkeys, Glade, Sunday -- but we're monster fans of them so there.

Weird String Band, Tadpole Stage, Sunday -- entertainers par excellence, love their fiddle, double bass and acoustic guitar versions of pop clasics like Don't You Want Me Baby! (that one was a real random 'wandering past' discovery too)

We missed a fair few acts we really wanted to see.

Jarvis a bit of a regret but less so now I hear he did not manage even one Pulp number.

But missing both Nick Cave and Blur on Sunday night were real minuses, especially as the Prodigy on the Other Stage (where we were on shift at Info) only lasted an hour and ten minutes. They were excellent, but bad value timing wise.

More tomorrow!!

How bad were the phones for non-orange customers like me!

I got very few text messages all 12 hours or longer (up to 4 days) later than they were sent.

Good bits:

Ray Davies  Madness, Specials, Manu Dibango

Never having to queue for anything

Always finding decent toilets,

Good food, great smoothies,

Getting off site super fast

Watching 80 people pretending to be penguins.

Nice people to spend time with :)

Fluffy Rock Cafe - always playing good stuff when I walked past.

Bad bits:

Walking up the hill last thing Sat night to discover Fayre's Fair was shut :( no cake :(

Shopping was pants, got two nice things but it was all really dull tbh. And the Rex Mouse stall??! wtf?

Not having a little plastic pocket for my guide so I lost about 3 of them and had to keep asking what was on.

Sleeping through Rolf.

Being a bit too hot on occasion.

Square Crumpets

oh aye, meant to say - that was fucking shit you getting robbed!! did anyone else around you get done too? What field were you in?

Yeah, it sucked but I've been going since 99 so it was bound to happen eventually. We were in Pennards and a few people said they heard people trying their tents but they woke up unlike pissed old me who slept through them stealing something from under my head.

I was fucking battered though. Luckily Magic Sam still had money so although it was a pisser it could have been worse it just meant that we had to be more careful and couldn't go shopping and I cut down on my cider drinking considerably which was maybe not a bad thing. :hmm:

I fucking hate cunts that do that

I know a couple who do - knocks me sick

less shopping is good, but less cider??

There must've been some positively acrobatic shitting going on in the toilets this year from what I saw there, very impressive

I only saw one really bad toilet all weekend. Most annoying was no lock or no seat because I can't squat, especially when pissed so I take wet wipes to wipe the seat.

Had a fucking mad one; lots of work and some play, but maybe not as much as I was hoping. 4 bar shifts on busy-as-fuck bars really takes it out of you... four days in a row too, although mainly having a cold and completely losing my voice helped with that. Still.... fucking good experience, and I only spent about £60 the entire festival, including £20 on some crap fake MDMA I can't even be bothered to try. Free/Discounted food and drinks for the win (plus staff showers with TILES, woot!), got some no' bad tips too.

I really enjoyed seeing...

Neil Young - bit up and down but generally just amazing, his set basically rocked, what an atmosphere, and what an ending. A Day in The Life! :D

Rusko - sickkkkkkkkkkk, nuff said.

N-type - more dubstep sickness, but at almost 20 I felt old, loads of fucking sprogs there.

Roots Manuva - Pretty damn good, although not amazing, I was glad I caught most of his set, and had a good (wonky wonked) dance; loved it when he dropped WItness (one hope) and people went madddd.

Atomic Drop - they played in that cool little bar/tent on the Glade one night, and it went from kinda quiet to fucking AMAZING, seriously one of the best things I saw, and then some dude was on after them who was VERY good too. It got fucking rammed in there!

Rolf Harris - good morning lulz, although not great accoustics and too many fucking people.

Peatbog Faeries - possibly the best thing I saw at the festival, absolutely mindblowingly fantastically perfect and brilliant, had such an amazing time dancing about to them, was fucking blown away.... sunday night in STYLE! Left Blur because ZZZZZZZZZZ how fucking boring can you get. Screw you, 80,000 people, Blur are fucking dull and I couldn't remember a note or a lyric from 20 minutes of their droning if you paid me. Ok, I am being o.t.t. they did sound kinda cool for what they are, I just find it monumentally wanky and dull.

Missed Eat Static, DJ Food, Mr Scruff and DJ Yoda, but oh well, seen 'em before mostly. Glad everyone seems to have fun, i'm still recovering now and feeling a bit better, although I never really got that messy the whole time, mainly just didn't sleep enough. Sorry to not meet any urbs but hey, good craic anyway, especially tuesday and wednesday before most people turned up and the Stone Circles were calm and fucking serene. :)

I didn't see that many bad ones either, except weirdly, the first one I went in after I got through the ticket entrance was the most cliche ranko festival toilet ever, condom strewn, dirty nappy, shit everywhere..was a good start.

After that though was okay, I had such a lovely clean one in the gay club I went to that when I came out I said 'oh god, that toilet was AMAZING, I didn't want to LEAVE!':D

It's been another baking day on the farm today. RAF having lots of jollies over the site. One Hercules was only just above Pilon height. Almost eye level to the farm, where I was watching from

Home for me now though... just left Castle Cary. The festival only really ends when I step off at Paddington. It's the only brief moment of the year when I don't like London.

Mendip Street Preachers

Mendip Street Preachers anyone?

This was by the emergency services area at the north of the site.

If anyone was wondering, taking an iPhone to Glastonbury is a total waste of time. Soon as punters turn up the internet and 3g waves good bye, meaning you have a 2g phone at best.

Gonna take my K800i with an orange payg sim next time.
