Glastonbury 2009

Tbh I don't really know although I think it's partly financial reasons. It would be fair to say that those of us who've been involved for the past few years are gutted :( Hopefully will be back in 2010 though with any luck :)

I bet you are, it's a real shame. :(

What 'financial reasons'? :hmm: And if a couple of Workers bars went, what would replace them? :hmm:

Ive been reading up on it on efests and it seems the it was some kind of financial descion. Leftfield the orginisation will not be there but Glastonbury seem to have plans for some kind of stage or something to replace it. Wokers Beer Company are also supposed to be losing a couple of bars or perhaps the whole thing.

Glastonbury itself has said that there will still be music on the wednesday and thursday.

Will be trying to catch up on all this, I've been very busy just recently ;)

I do not believe that any replacement-stage for Leftfield will not have SOME kind of political theme. We'll see.

As for WBC .... :hmm:
Know nothing on this as yet -- again, I'll be catching up soon -- but I always thought the WBC had too cosy a relationship with big corporates like Budshiter (forrmer sponsor) and Carlsberg (current one) for my taste. Perhaps that was logistically/financially unavoidable, and I'm sure any new arrangement won't be any less corporate, but I'm just saying ...

I'm a little surprised that contracts are being tinkered with in mid contractual term -- were not all contracts renegotiated when Carlsberg took over as main drink sponsor? I thought (?) they were due to run until after Glastonbury 2010. Will dig around a bit.

The Real Ale tent (semi autonomous) and Cider Bus (completely so -- Burrowhills do their own thing) will survive whatever though, I'm confident.

Have convinced boy to come to Glasto this year :) if there are still tickets left... ummm...

otherwise will have to work again!

either way, see you at the cider bus :D

I'd be very surprised if WBC lost the whole thing. There's no other "good causes" organisation that has their 'large event' experience of running bars, and the festival themselves wouldn't take on such a big responsibility. Removing a couple of bars could be something as mundane as scaling. There are 20ish WBC bars, so a few less isn't that dramatic.

It'll be interesting to see how the Left Field hole is filled though. As I've alluded, GFL tends to delegate everything (apart from the very biggest stages), and works on the delegates stuff growing organically.

Witness Trash City working it's way up. On the occasion there has been wholesale replacements -e.g. Shangri-La for Lost Vagueness, it's been less of an automatic success. They did okay, but it was a big ask, doing all that from scratch. So I'm curious to see how the Left Field replacement turns out. There was a lot of goodwill there, with stalwarts such as Bragg and Benn. Big boots to fill.

But so many of the Shangri La folk were LV folk anyway (just minus Roy :D ) that i think it should have been a better change-over, it was REALLY disappoining this year, really underpowered

The more I think about Glasto nowadays the more I think "meh".

Unless I end up working on a stage there I doubt I'll ever go again tbh. Time to move on...

I know what you mean. I like the idea of it, but not the reality :D

You both missed last year didn't you? It's amazing how life affirming a bit of sunshine at Glastonbury can be.

I kept told myself that I'd stop going when I had another sunny year. Now I feel as though I owe it to myself to undergo the proper miserable downpour experience again before quitting

:D

:)

Even with my long and posiitve Glastonbury track record, I was feeling pretty miserable after the mudbath hellhole of 2007, and even half contemplating a break .... was only the fear of missing a sunny one that killed that idea.

But in 2008, for me it was as much the working experience** -- approaching the whole thing from a completely different perspective -- that refreshed and renewed it all.

**Working with Deb too. That helped to say the least! :p

The mostly lovely weather did make a huge difference though .... I defy anyone, even those who genuinely aren't too bothered about rain and mud at festivals, to go back to a dry and sunny one after a mudbath the previous time, and not enjoy it a whole lot better.

Actually, I hate sunshine and hot weather, particularly at Glastonbury where there's nowhere to hide. It's not the weather that puts me off, it's the hoops you have to jump through to get there, the crowds, the rubbish and the 'here I am, now entertain me' people. :D

Addict.............. ;) :p

The Times today quotes Emily Eavis as saying they are down to 15,000 tickets.

If that's true, I'd guess this year will be a comfortable sell out.

Just catching up with the thread but what a joy it is having the ticket in the bag.
Roll on summer.

why dont you register now and see if there are any advance tickets left???

Last year myself and Mysterygirl camped with some other peeps in the family field. Youre welcome to join us :)
