Far-right response to Southport Outrage And Ongoing Violent Disorder

today's sentences...20 and 30 months for 2 blokes setting fire to an old bill car and 3 years for another bloke for violent disorder (plus 3 months concurrent for punching old bill in the face).

4 months ago 2 people got 3 1/2 yes for blocking the Dartford Bridge.

FFS
To try and look at this unemotionally, blocking a key bridge round London and all the ripple effect it caused, caused far more damage and cost tons more money than setting fire to one police car.

At a time when the former dpp, now pm, is insisting the rioters will receive signal sentences it's honestly something of a farce to chuck someone away for what's honestly a far lighter sentence than the deterrence shammer's talked about

Yeah, the idea of blocking major roads does make me a bit uneasy, even when I agree with the cause - nothing to do with economics, but in terms of potentially blocking emergency vehicles, people trying to get to important medical appointments, etc

I do feel some of the reporting of "100+ planned protests" isn't helpful at this point. bumping up the numbers of hangers on. all these cunts feed on the publicity - at some point removing that oxygen surely makes sense. even the normal balanced media is getting a little over-excited.

if bringing cost to it - replacing a burnt out vehicle has a direct cost of buying a new vehicle which comes out of public money

blocking a bridge - whats the cost - less profit, mostly made by multinationals, sorry a bit 🤷🏻‍♂️ about that

get to fuck it did
the impacts of racist rioting are far deeper
Yes, collectively the impacts of the riots are. I guess it's a grey area of the bit inbetween punishing an individual for their own personal action and punishing them for the collective actions of the group they are part of. For the record, I absolutely want the book thrown at them.

Yeh. But vd max 5 years, riot 10. Rachel Reeves has had a hand in charging advice I think. 3 year sentence out in maybe 15 months

Do you mean Yvette Cooper? It's nothing to do with Reeves and she has no legal background.

But either way, I sincerely hope not. Ministers should not involve themselves in charging decisions.

I suppose the excuse is that this lot have turned up sheepish and recalcitrant in court whereas JSO were arguing that they'd done the right thing and clearly intended to do it again. How do these sentences stack up against 2011?

When I signed-up for the job I thought I'd be infiltrating international cartels and foreign state spy rings.

Instead I've spent over 20 years reporting on hobnobs, baked potato fillings, and the potential for insurrection within Dulwich Hamlet Football Club.
I was going to say it's not the best use of our taxes.

I disagree. The charges are clearly a political decision in light of prison population and liability for damages. The charges brought attract a fraction of 'the full force of the law'. It'll determine your common or garden racist. Perhaps. But there's clearly two tier policing in that were it black or brown people rioting heavier charges and sentences would be laid
I'm sure the lack of prison spaces would have been a factor but a lot of these people will never have seen the inside of a police station cell, never mind a prison cell.
Three to five years isn't to be sniffed at. It's a lot more than probably any of these muppets were expecting, and it'll be life-changing for a lot of them.

Plenty of ordinary, working class people were affected by the bridge being blocked not to mention in 101 other ways. The Green Party candidate in my town couldn't get her friend to a vital cancer treatment appointment at a hospital because of those fuckheads.

She’s the chancellor, charging with riot means cost to UK govt so she’ll have had a view on that surely

Oh god are we going to have this out again

So no ordinary WC folk were affected by fascists rioting and destroying public assets they use eg CAB, libraries etc?

And none of them pay tax which will have to go towards replacing these buildings / police vans? Which could have been spent on something more positive like removing 2 child limit?

TBF, it's just a figure, they are not naming actual locations.

jesus mary and joseph

yvette cooper not the chancellor, reeves is probably writhing in unhappiness at the prospect of paying out riot damages

Like others I dont think todays planned Krystalnacht will come to anything. Its just a list of targets on social media - its midweek, a high proportion of the twats have been knicked, and they dont have the numbers. I seriously doubt that more people are gogin to flock to join the ranks of the hotel burners. Loads of services and centres are closing down today - I think its a massive over-reaction which is giving them what they want. Many of these places are in highly diverse areas and if any of the hatemob turned up they would have their arses handed to them in short order (and the fash know this very well).
Im pissed off that my work cancelled a trip out for the guys in the hotel - we should be standing with people, not abaondoning them. Its the fascists and racists who should be keeping their heads down - not the people on their hate list.
I've done some volunteering in a newly set up refugee centre here and am about to go back to do some regular sessions. Bournemouth have a march planned for 18th and it's walking distance to the centre.

We do have refugees housed in hotels here and a lot of hostility towards them, on the other hand our local fash are mostly over the age of 80 so may not be too great at rioting.

Your mention of trips got me thinking Kaka Tim and I was thinking about organising a counter demonstration where we take some of the refugees out to the countryside for a nice walk and picnic. Difficult to pull off though.
