F1 2018

Did he?

I'm afraid I hit the mute button whenever he talks to anyone not in a racing team uniform.

I'm getting cranky.

:)
Yes he stopped some basketball player to talk to him and they guy couldn't hear anything Martin said, so Martin asked him if he'd lift him up to see what it was like to be so tall, a very awkward moment

Oh, boy.

I find the whole grid-walk thing a bit of a cringe whenever he homes in on a celeb.

Apparently, the race has been declared after 68 laps instead of 70, as per the wave-flag-fuck-up rules.

Also, the explanation is that an official gave the celeb the flag early and told her to wave it.

No biggie - only the honour of the fastest lap at stake. But imagine the clusterfuck if there'd been overtaking on laps 69 and 70.

Interesting story about Force India in the news
It is being reported in the German press that Force India are in serious financial trouble (nothing new there then as they have been for the past 3 seasons), what is interesting is that the report also says that Liberty Media have bailed them out with a cash loan running into several millions of dollars. It is also claimed that as part of the loan deal Vijay Mallya had to stand down as a board member of the company, I can understand this as Liberty Media are a publicly listed company in the USA and having someone like Vijay with all his financial problems (the UK Courts have ruled that his investment can be seized) would be a very bad risk loan. He must still be living some lavish lifestyle as the courts have also ruled that he can have an £18,000 weekly allowance

Lewis Hamiltons contract
As mentioned above, it seems that Lewis and Mercedes have reached agreement on his contract. Reports were that this would be announced at the British GP, but it seems that it may now be announced at the French GP as everyone already knows a deal has been done, so there is little point in holding back the news. It seems that what was holding up the talks was the length of his contract, as Lewis only wanted 2 years and Mercedes wanted 3, but this appears to have now been resolved. It is reported that his new contract will pay him a basic of $40 million a year plus bonuses, he will keep any championship winning car and also Mercedes will provide him with a copy of all trophy's he wins. It seems that Lewis wants to release an album in 2020 and wouldn't have been able to promote it if he was still in F1 and he would have had no time to do so.

F1 new logo
As was reported last year when F1 released its new logo, it may yet have to change it again. 3m have a very similar logo and have now gone to court to stop Formula One from using its new logo in the USA and Europe. 3M use their logo on its Futuro range of therapeutic clothing, including ankle supports, knee straps and compression tights. Formula 1 have now also launched a new line of clothing earlier this year featuring its new logo. 3M applied for a pan-European trademark to its logo on Feb 17 2017, according to records from the EU’s Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The trademark was registered four months later. This gives 3M precedence as F1 didn’t lodge the application for its new logo until November.

Records show that 3M lodged opposition to F1’s trademark application on May 22. It usually takes EUIPO up to four months to make a decision. Here are the 2 logos they do look similar bit I'm not sure there would really be much confusion. F1’s trademark application covers 26 of the total of 45 categories, including one for clothing, but excluding the one relating to therapeutic clothing. However, this separation does not guarantee F1 protection because the products that the logos are used on are similar.

Is Michael Andretti about to buy Force India
Force India are in real financial trouble, the team owes millions of pounds to suppliers, not least Mercedes who it is report are owed £15 million for their engine supply alone and it's clear the shareholders are unable to pay the team's debts. Liberty Media have given them a loan, but it reality it is only a matter of time before the team goes into receivership if they are not brought out. The team has now been up for sale for at least 4 years, but its owners Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy are asking far to much money for a team strangled in debt and running in the mid-field. Both Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy have their own problems to deal with both owe many hundreds of millions to the Indian government, Mallya is facing extradition charges in the UK and Roy has already spent time in jail but is currently on parole.

Whilst Andretti looks set to run a McLaren-backed entrant in IndyCar for 2019 with Fernando Alonso behind the wheel, he was seen in the Canadian Grand Prix paddock alongside company president J-F Thormann and Alexander Rossi's father Pieter Rossi. Liberty are keen to expand in the US, with Miami set to join the calendar in 2019 as part of those efforts, a second US-owned team alongside Haas would provide a major boost, particularly as Andretti has links to Rossi, who remains one of the country's best hopes for F1. Therefore if Andretti have indicated an interest in taking over Force India, the survival of the team until the a deal is agreed is in Liberty's interests.

Asked if Andretti were interested in Force India, the team issued a brief statement which certainly didn't deny the idea, "Andretti Autosport is a diverse Motorsports property and we have many discussions about opportunities within and outside of our current portfolio". Others rumored to be interested in buying the team are Rich Energy, Branham, the teams title sponsors BWT and now Andretti, surely it is only a matter of time before Force India has new owners.

Renault poach Matthew Harman from Mercedes
Renault has been picking up talent from the top teams (and the FIA) since last year to boost its knowledge pool. Recently the French outfit signed Mercedes’ head of powertrain integration Matthew Harman to be their new deputy chief designer. Harman has been a Mercedes man for the last 17 years. He first entered the Silver Arrows outfit as an engineering team leader, in the engine division. Back then, Mercedes was only an engine maker for F1 and did not have a works team.

He later moved to the powertrain integration role in the works team in 2011. After re-entering F1 as a works outfit in 2016, Renault started investing in developing their Enstone facility and has ramped up the hiring since last year. Harman’s knowledge of Mercedes championship winning car’s integration is expected to help the French outfit in its long-term goal of winning the world title. In his new role, Harman will work with the outfit’s chief designer Martin Tolliday in designing the future cars for the Enstone team.

Is Lando Norris on his way to Toro Rosso
Rumor is that Lando Norris will replace Brendon Hartley at Toro Rosso, but if he does I believe it will only be for the rest of the season as McLaren may need him to drive for them next season. Red Bull is currently very short of young drivers ready to step in to replace Hartley. Which is why Red Bull plucked Brendon from sports car racing last season, because it had run out of other choices. The most senior of the current Red Bull Junior drivers is Dan Ticktum, currently racing in the FIA European Formula 3 Championship. There is also Nirei Fukuzumi, who has a deal with Red Bull to race in Super Formula, but this is only thanks to the Honda link with Toro Rosso.

If Norris does go to Toro Rosso it will be because McLaren want him to get some more experience driving in F1. At the moment neither McLaren driver has a contract for 2019 and it is clear that the hopes of a competitive car for Fernando Alonso after the switch to Renault engines have not been fulfilled (It is believed that Alonso's contract extension for 2018 contained an opt-out for 2019), while Stoffel Vandoorne also only signed a 1 year extension to his McLaren contract.

Clearly it would be good for both McLaren and Norris if he were to join Toro Rosso for the last half of the season as it would give Norris more driving experience in F1 and the McLaren team a good opportunity to asses his prospects to replace Alonso.

It is reported that Andretti looks set to run a McLaren-backed entrant in IndyCar for 2019 with Fernando Alonso behind the wheel, he clearly would not be able to run both F1 and IndyCar. It was also reported in the American press that Zak Brown and Eric Boullier were in Detroit talking about McLaren entering IndyCar for 2019.

Could Adrian Newey be on the move
Rumors suggest the famous F1 designer is contemplating an offer from Renault to join the French marque at the end of his current contract later this year. The rumor seems to have started in the Russian press. Newey was at Le Mans over the weekend to watch his son race for the Russian team SMP, so I'm guessing the rumor start there. Renault have been hiring from other teams and even the FIA to try and bring forward their chanced of winning a World title.

Fernando Alonso ticks box two
Fernando Alonso’s assault on motorsport’s fabled ‘triple crown’ moved a step closer to completion last weekend after the Spaniard ticked off the second of his three objectives by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

More trouble at McLaren

Former McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh says he's ready to return to his old team if they want him back. It comes amid reports that the team is facing a "revolt from disgruntled staff" who are deeply unhappy with the direction of the team after years of declining fortunes. A report in the press claims "Members of the shop floor were so furious at what they saw as the incompetence of their leaders that they plan to enlist Whitmarsh’s support as a last-ditch attempt to help turn around the ailing team".

When asked for a comment, Whitmarsh said “I live locally and I bump into friends who work at McLaren, they are disappointed with what is happening and remonstrate with me. Tim Goss's departure pitched me over the edge, he admitted, referring to the recent departure of the team's chief technical officer. "Tim has a fantastic intellect, and is a hard-working, non-political, value-adding member of the team. He was scapegoated".

Zut alors. French GP this weekend.

The timings look an hour out compared to other European races, but I double-checked. If these are wrong, blame Macron or Napoleon or Joan of Arc.

UK times:

Le vroom!

:)

Good idea

Not being ungrateful at all. Will be great to be there Friday and I know the sponsors we are will have excellent access, so it will be a great day. However it feels almost cruel to go see the Friday practice and then go home to watch the race on telly :(

Be shameless, talk to the organisers and tell them if they have any no shows to give you a call. I had hospitality one year and my mate came along on a no show pit pass for the Sunday.

Nothing ventured/don't ask don't get etc.....

McLaren offer Daniel Ricciardo $20 million per year
That would triple the Australian's current salary believed to be around $6.5 million. Ricciardo heads into this weekend's French GP in fourth position in the championship, as the race returns to France after ten years off the race calendar. The 28 year old will become a free agent at the end this season and McLaren have been linked with the Monaco GP winner for the past few months as speculation grows about Ricciardo's future. If the Australian were to accept the money McLaren offers him, it's still way behind the salaries of championship leader Sebastian Vettel and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton who earn around $60 million and $50 million a year. But where else can he go? I think that Mercedes will announce this weekend that they are keeping their current line-up and I have a feeling that Ferrari will also keep their two drivers, who can they get (other than Ricciardo ) in place of Kimi?

Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko says "McLaren offers him more every week":facepalm::p

Red Bull to switch to Honda power unit

The energy drink owned team announced this week that it will use Honda power. Following several weeks of formal discussions, Red Bull and Honda reached an agreement to join forces for 2019 and 2020, taking them up to the end of the current engine regulations. The team will continue to race under the full name of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. “We have been impressed by Honda’s commitment to F1, by the rapid steps they have made in recent times with our sister team Scuderia Toro Rosso, and by the scope of their ambition, which matches our own,” said Team Principal Christian Horner, he went on to say “This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of an exciting new phase in Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s efforts to compete not just for Grand Prix wins but for what is always our goal – championship titles.”

When Renault boss Abiteboul answered if he is relieved or disappointed, his response was "Neither one nor the other. We got an answer after waiting almost a year". I'm sure that with Red Bull moving to Honda the 4th fastest (slowest) power-unit in F1 Danny Ric will be looking to move, but are McLaren the team to move to?

Ferrari and Kimi
Above I wrote that I think Ferrari will keep the same driver line-up as this year. But last night i spoke to a friend in Sweden who said that there is lots of gossip in the Finnish press that Kimi has been telling friends that he intends to retire at the end of this season. It is hard to know if this is true but if it is, it leaves Ferrari with a bit of a problem. Who can they replace Kimi with? The press seem to think if Kimi is replaced it would be by Charles Leclerc, but this would go against everything Ferrari has ever done, They never bring in a rookie driver and Leclerc is a real rookie having only had 7 F1 races for Sauber.

Räikkönen claimed three podium finishes in the first four races of the season and seems to be doing better this year than in 2017, so would Ferrari want to change him, albeit that he will be 39 later this year, for a driver who will only have one full season in F1 at the start of next season. It is clear that if they had the chance Ferrari would go for Danny Ric, he has shown he can beat Vettle but would Vettle want him in the team.

There are two other drivers with links to Ferrari, they are Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg, but would Ferrari want them or indeed would they want to move to Ferrari when it is clear that Leclerc is destined to move to the team if he continues his current form , maybe in 2020. Ferrari have just to cover 2019 if they don't take Leclerc as a rookie, so maybe they can persuade Kimi to stay on for one last season.

I expect to read lots about Ferrari's second driver for 2019 over the silly season :)

That Paul Ricard circuit has a lot of eye-socking red and blue stripes in the run-off areas.

Apparently, it has gritty stuff in it to slow down sliding cars. It didn't stop Ericsson turning his into a bonfire though in FP1.

not sure their other choice Leclerc would want to sign up to being a number 2 driver either

to early is his career
