Mercedes special livery for Abu Dhabi
Mercedes will use a special livery during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team known as the Silver Arrows already had alternative livery this year, but Toto Wolff announces another change. At the beginning of 2020, the colour of the Mercedes will be changed from silver to black. In this way, Mercedes is trying to help in the fight against discrimination and inequality and is also supporting star driver
Lewis Hamilton, who is committed to these issues. In Abu Dhabi, however, there will be a small change to the livery. ''We have a very special surprise for our team members in Abu Dhabi this weekend. Saturday and Sunday we will be driving in a slightly different colour scheme with everyone's name on the car to honour the enormous commitment and determination of everyone in Brixworth and Brackley. Everyone has worked hard this year to raise the bar in this enormously intense season and we hope that this gesture will really show the appreciation we have for everyone involved," Wolff says in Mercedes statement. Mercedes team boss is now also looking forward to the last race of the season. "Abu Dhabi is always a nice race weekend with a year-end feeling and an interesting circuit for the engineers to tackle. The atmosphere will be slightly different this year with the COVID-19 control measures, but we are as motivated as ever to end the season with a strong result and enter the winter break in the right way," concludes the Austrian.
Toto summoned Bottas for talks after Bahrain race
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was not happy with Valtteri Bottas' performance at the Sakhir Grand Prix and wanted to talk with the Finns' team after he was out-shined by rookie team-mate George Russell. Lewis Hamilton missed the race due to contracting coronavirus, Bottas was expected to lead from the front. The 31-year-old started on pole position but was overtaken on the opening lap by Russell. Bottas was unable to chase down Hamilton's substitute and looked on course for a second-placed finish.
That was until Mercedes messed up a double-stacked pit stop and both drivers slipped down the field. Bottas ended up finishing the race in eighth place, one position ahead of Russell. However, it was the younger F1 star who performed more overtakes and should have won the race. Wolff admitted it was a difficult day at the office for Bottas and he wanted to talk to his No 2 driver. “I need to talk with [Valtteri] and his crew but yeah, he did not shine today,” Wolff told Sky Germany. Mercedes are waiting to decide if Russell will get another chance to drive for their team this weekend at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Hamilton's quarantine ends today but he must first return a negative COVID-19 test before he can link up with his team. Bottas could be the senior driver for the second week in a row and that is something he is not used to. "It was a different feeling, I've never been in a team being the older guy," Bottas said. "But in the end as a driver, you just want to do the best job in any case for the race weekend, and it doesn't matter who is you team-mate, you always want to beat him. Friday I think was not great for me, due to different reasons, broken floor in practice one, bit of a crack in the floor in practice two, so not really ideal."
Bottas also explained how he did not have to give his new ally too much advice. "Set-up wise, we raced here last week," he added. "There was a lot we learned, so there were minimal things we had to change. "I think George also pretty much started with Lewis's set-up for the weekend, so there were not massive things to do. He's got his engineers, so for sure they know what to do with the car. I didn't feel like there was a massive responsibility, because if there was anything I could change and give directions, I was trying to do that. It was pretty straightforward."
