Mercedes all British driver line-up for 2022
George Russell could become part of an all-British Mercedes line-up in 2022 following his impressive debut for the team as Lewis Hamilton’s stand-in at the Sakhir Grand Prix. A pitstop tyre blunder followed by a puncture denied him a remarkable victory just two days after driving the car for the first time. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the idea of bringing Russell into the team for next season was not “a realistic situation”, but hinted he could partner Hamilton for the following year.
“He’s a Williams driver, and is signed up to Williams, and our driver line-up is Valtteri [Bottas] and Lewis,” said Wolff. “So, I don’t see this as a realistic situation at that moment of time [for 2021]. But I can understand that it would be an interesting situation, both in the team and maybe a bit of a wild ride for all of us. Maybe we’ll have that in the future. We need to see what the future holds. I haven’t made my mind now what that means for us. We learned that George Russell is somebody to count on in the future. He has all the potential and all the ingredients that a future star needs.”
Hamilton, still recovering from Covid and in isolation in Bahrain, is expected to put pen to paper on a new Mercedes deal in the coming days, while Bottas has a contract in place to drive for Mercedes next season. But Russell’s stock has risen massively after narrowly missing out on pole position for Sunday’s race before beating Bottas off the line and dominating the race before two doses of misfortune. Asked whether the Briton had a chance to be a future world champion, Wolff said: “Lewis is the absolute benchmark and nobody is anywhere near him, but today we’ve seen there is a new generation coming up that can be really strong. The sky is the limit.” Russell said of his potential future following his race drive: “Hopefully it puts Toto in a difficult position moving forward.”
Mercedes fined 20,000 euros for tyre cock-up
Formula 1 champions Mercedes were fined 20,000 euros on Sunday after they fitted the wrong front tyres to George Russell’s leading car at a bungled Sakhir Grand Prix pitstop. The mistake meant stand-in Russell, replacing Lewis Hamilton after the seven times world champion tested positive for COVID-19 in Bahrain, lost position and risked a post-race disqualification. Mercedes mistakenly put tyres reserved for team mate Valtteri Bottas onto Russell’s car after both pitted when the safety car was deployed, forcing the Briton to make another stop that dropped him to fifth. Russell eventually finished ninth after a late slow puncture dealt another blow just as he had moved back up to second and was reeling in Racing Points’s Mexican winner Sergio Perez.
Mercedes were summoned by stewards post-race for the infringement. The team explained that a radio communications technical issue was to blame, with the pit wall’s message to the pit crew going unheard because Russell had transmitted over it. “We knew immediately when Valtteri didn’t have his tyres, we knew that Valtteri’s tyres were on George’s car,” said team boss Toto Wolff. The stewards found mitigating circumstances, with Mercedes rectifying the problem within one lap and losing further time. Russell was allowed to keep the points. Bottas’s pitstop took 27 seconds as a result of the mix-up, with mechanics taking off his car’s tyres and then putting the same ones back on again once they realised what had happened, compromising the Finn’s race. Stewards noted that such a breach had not previously happened in F1.
Someone was bound to write a Russell to Red Bull story
Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers believes that Sergio Perez or George Russell should become Max Verstappen's new teammate. Alexander Albon was found weighed too light, according to the 41-year-old Dutchman. Buying Russell's contract with Mercedes and Williams is certainly an option for Red Bull Racing, according to Albers. "This must be a wake-up call for Red Bull," Albers said in a conversation with De Telegraaf. According to the former Formula 1 driver, there are two drivers that the Austrian racing team should look at. "They are Russell and Perez. They are the drivers who really perform. There is no one in the new talent pool at the moment. They have to go for a Russell or a Perez. Red Bull is also a team that has funding for that. has to buy out Russell."
Nevertheless, the analyst considers the choice for Perez the most likely. "I don't see what choice they have at the moment. We have seen that Albon has performed poorly again, actually like the entire season. Max just needs a good driver to further develop and fine-tune the car during a weekend like that. Then you can find the last two to three tenths. At the moment Max has to do everything alone." The name of Nico Hulkenberg does not appear in the list of candidates from Albers to become Max Verstappen's teammate in 2021 in the RB17. Perez, therefore, appears to be the number one candidate. "Or a choice like Russell", he finally ends up with the name of the current Williams driver.
[Not a chance in my view of Russell going anywhere other than Mercedes, Toto is his manager I believe, so he isn't going to let a future star like George go anywhere]
