F1 2020

George Russell did well in both free practices, he finished fastest in both. According to computer simulators Bottas should be quickest in qualifying and get pole, if you add his quickest sector times but he had a number of lap times deleted for track limits. Russell hasn't been beaten by a team mate in qualifying since he has been in F1 and I hope he keeps that stat up tomorrow, if I honest :)

Interesting that Mercedes had both their cars do the race simulations in FP2 on the hard tyre while Red Bull did theirs on the medium. I haven't bothered to look up what the best tyre strategy is for the race as last weekend not one driver in the top ten did what was meant to be the fastest strategy. It would be interesting if Red Bull and Mercedes have different tyre strategies for the race, I guess we'll see after qualifying 2 tomorrow.

Good afternoon all (not often I can say that most races are in the morning for me)
I'm looking forward to watching Russell in qualifying, not sure he has the poll in him but I hope he does

Well done Bottas not to mess that up as it would of been quite embarrassing

Hmm wonder what Max comments are going to be :hmm:

Could be worse could pay for it and your service provider being shite

same box for 7 years and causing issue ghosting and vision disruption

they are adamant the problem is my tv

even if the problems don't occur in previously recorded programmes

Will Nikita Mazepin be the new Romain Grosjean
While I don't want to speak badly of someone who has just announced he will not be driving in F1 again (Romain Grosjean has accepted the advice of doctors and confirmed he will not take the risk of racing one last time for Haas in Abu Dhabi next Sunday). He was well known for crashing into other drivers or making them run off track because he didn't leave them room, here is a report of yesterdays F2 race and the high jinks of young Nikita Mazepin:
Nikita Mazepin, future Haas driver, will be driving his last races in Formula 2 this weekend. The Russian drives for Hitech GP this season and is currently fifth in the championship. The title is no longer possible, but a fourth place is still within reach. On the short circuit in Bahrain he seemed to drive to the podium, but he was given two penalties for aggressive defending. On a number of occasions he went over the line and was punished for this. Felipe Drugovich, the driver was also involved in both incidents. The Brazilian had more speed than Mazepin, but the prospective driver of Haas did not want to give up his place. In doing so, he pushed Drugovich off the track twice, in a way that really should not be allowed.

He was given a five-second penalty for that and two penalty points on his licence. Mazepin was also involved in another incident. When Yuki Tsunoda wanted to overtake him, he pushed the Japanese all the way to the pit exit. Again, he was given a five-second penalty and two penalty points on his licence. As a result, he fell off the podium and ended up ninth. His total penalty points on his licence are now eleven, which means that he escaped one point after a suspension of one race weekend. Haas will hope that the Russian knows how to behave in F1 and doesn't get as many penalties as he currently does in F2.

In the F1 paddock a lot of attention is paid to the F2 races, to discover future talent. However, this time there were more worries, as Mazepin will be driving in F1 next year. "I really hope he's going to get a penalty for this, because this went across the border," Daniel Ricciardo says to Motorsport-Total. "His line was changed more than once and that's not allowed," said the Australian. Guenther Steiner sees no major problems with his future rookie. "The most important thing was that he got his super license. There was a small chance he wouldn't make it, so this is a success in the first place. He fought pretty hard and threw it all in. Things like this can happen then. You also have to learn from it and this is just part of the learning process. In the end he also got that punishment," said Haas' team boss.

George Russell pressing the wrong buttons
George Russell has revealed he accidentally engaged the neutral button on his Mercedes Formula 1 car during his qualifying debut for the team at the Sakhir Grand Prix. Russell, who is acting as stand-in for Lewis Hamilton after the seven-time world champion was ruled out of the weekend following a positive COVID-19 test, was narrowly denied a maiden pole position by Valtteri Bottas having got within 0.026s of the Finn’s best Q3 lap. The Briton said he has had to “unlearn” and “relearn” parts of his driving skills set after swapping the slowest car on the grid in his Williams for the fastest with Mercedes’ “alien” W11 around Bahrain’s shorter Outer Loop circuit.

"I guess arguably I probably would've been better off if I'd just came in with an open mind and not raced this circuit or at least half of this circuit last week,” Russell said as he reflected on his first qualifying outing for Mercedes. “Because I spent all last week breaking at 'this point', turning at 'this point at Turn 1' and 'doing this, doing that'. And this car is just completely different. Then all the procedures, learning new procedures, learning new buttons. FP1 was a mess pressing the wrong buttons here and there. Even in qualifying, I pressed neutral at one point instead of something else.” [Did it cost him pole?]

Having raced at Williams for two seasons since making his F1 debut in 2019, Russell admitted the adjustment process had been a challenge given the short turnaround. "You don't even think about these things and it just naturally happens,” he said. "[Mercedes has] been trying to modify as much as physically possible just to make things easier for me. It's been a lot of work and still takes a bit of time, it takes a couple of races just to understand all of that.” Adding to the task is the fact Russell’s car does not fit well due to his large 6ft 1inch frame, being five inches taller than Hamilton. Russell is also having to squeeze his size 11 boots into a smaller size in order to operate the pedals. "Comfort-wise it isn't perfect," he explained. "I'm very bruised and sore. It will be a fatiguing race. I had ice on the shoulders last night to reduce swelling, and my knees and toes are sore."

Romain Grosjean and Mercedes
There are reports that Mercedes will give Romain Grosjean a chance to test their car at some point so his last drive in an F1 car isn't the crash he had. Grosjean is reported as saying "I want to get back on the horse" and also saying that he doesn't want the crash to be his last memory of driving an F1 car. If the reports are true and Mercedes will give him a test its great news, that means his last memory will be of driving the fastest ever F1 car. Grosjean will not take part in Abu Dhabi at all and his place will again be taken by Pitero Fittipaldi

The first stream I listed above can be a little hard to follow and I'm not sure when it will start. Iirc up and left of the screen is "upcoming events", if you click on what kinda looks like an F1 car it will bring you to a screen with the F1 links, once you open that you'll get a new screen that has a player and just below the player are flags that will give you other options, Sky F1, NBC, Fox etc.

It worked for me OK during free practice and I found a good Sky 1 stream, both the other links are also good with Totalsportek having as many as 50 links to chose from most in HD

You don't need to download anything so don't, also if you don't have and ad-blocker or pop-up blocker you will get a couple of ads at the start but I haven't had them pop-up during the broadcast (I think something popped up on one of the links with livetv.sx during the practice, but I was switching through the links a lot to test the site, so may have been something I did), if you have a fast internet connection maybe Totalsportek is best for the UK, I really don't know. I don't use it as we have 4 or 5 devices working on our internet during a race so I find it buffers sometimes for us.

Good luck and let me know please which site worked best for you

Afternoon RaceFam :)

Just switched on the big telly (laptop ) for the build up.

Come on George
It took me under 5 minutes to hook a friends laptop to his TV during the week via his WIFI, check out youtube you'll find a video that shows you how to do it for your TV and laptop for sure. I expect this to be done by next season LOL ;)

Thanks for the pointers, i got the tek one to work but then it started buffering so I've splurged for a one day pass for NOW TV. I did have the monthly one but watching the last 2 races is cheaper for day passes.

Anyhoo, let's go race fans!
