Ferrari and Cadillac announce agreement on F1 power units for 2026 season

Following the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ferrari and Cadillac have announced an agreement that will see Formula One's 11th team to use the all-new power units of the Maranello-based company. General Motors and TWG Global have recently confirmed that they have reached an agreement in principle with Formula 1 to bring a Cadillac team to the series in 2026. In addition, the US car giant is also launching an F1 power unit that will put the Cadillac Formula 1 Team on the path to being a “full works” team — building its own F1 vehicles and power units — by the end of the decade. Cadillac would be the first new team to join F1 since 2016 and the eleventh team on the grid. Ahead of the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, General Motors also confirmed that Graeme Lowdon will join the fray as team principal for the new Cadillac F1 team. The Briton is also involved in management for China's first and only F1 driver Zhou Guanyu.

Ferrari and Cadillac have now announced an agreement that will see Formula One's 11th team to use the all-new power units of the Maranello-based company. Commenting on the announcement of its new partnership, Ferrari noted: "“Ferrari today announces a multi-year agreement starting from 2026 with Andretti Formula Racing LLC, regarding the supply of power unit and gearbox to the racing team led by TWG Global and General Motors, subject to Andretti Formula Racing LLC receiving written confirmation from the FIA – F1 that its entry to the 2026 FIA Formula One Championship has been accepted and approved,” read the brief statement from Ferrari.

McLaren Cars Has A New Owner With Almost Bottomless Pockets

The sale of McLaren Automotive is complete. The automaker's new owner brings with it an exceptionally healthy dose of cash, something McLaren needs to help move its business forward. The new owner of the British automaker hopes that this will help the company reach its potential thanks to access to new engineering and design capabilities, which should be good news for the next wave of supercars from the Woking-based brand, such as the eventual 750S replacement.

This is the conclusion of a deal first announced in October. CYVN Holdings, an Abu Dhabi government-owned investment arm, is buying the automaker from Mumtalakat, the sovereign wealth fund of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Somewhat confusingly, Mumtalakat purchased part of McLaren Automotive in 2017 but didn't take full control of McLaren Group, the entity that also includes the F1 racing cars, until 2024.

What does it mean? First, it means that McLaren road cars and McLaren F1 cars are once again separate. Second, it gives McLaren Automotive access to CYVN's quickly growing and impressive portfolio of other automotive companies. In the last two years, CYVN has been buying up stakes in other automotive entities. It took a 20 percent stake in Chinese electric car company Nio. It also bought Gordon Murray Technologies, the portion of the company (founded by the automotive engineer whose name is on the door) responsible for designing the iStream electric platform meant to sell to global OEMs, and has purchased UK-based EV startup ForSeven.

In a statement, the Abu Dhabi government said that "through this acquisition, CYVN is set to empower McLaren to reach its full potential via access to engineering and design capabilities, leading-edge technology, and experienced leadership to propel McLaren’s trajectory." His Excellency Jassem Mohammed Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, Chairman of CYVN Holdings, said, “This acquisition marks a defining moment in CYVN’s vision to build a leading, globally connected mobility platform and underscores Abu Dhabi’s growing role as a global center of excellence for innovation in advanced mobility".

In addition to buying McLaren's automotive business, CYVN will take a stake in the racing business. Not a controlling stake, though; while the agreements have all been signed, the Abu Dhabi government said that the deal is still subject to closing conditions and regulatory approval. The latter should be easy since both parties are governments.

Lando Norris and Max Verstappen staggering bonuses revealed, 10 best paid F1 drivers in 2024

The best-paid Formula 1 drivers in 2024 have been revealed - and there are huge reported bonuses handed out to both Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Verstappen won his fourth consecutive Drivers' Championship with two races to spare at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Norris, meanwhile, finished second, recording his first race win at the Miami Grand Prix before going on to win on three more occasions. It was the most successful season of the Brit's F1 career, and he and team-mate Oscar Piastri guided McLaren to their first Constructors' Championship win in 26 years.

According to Forbes, Verstappen has kept his spot as the best-paid F1 driver for the third season in a row. He collected a total of $75 million as part of his ongoing seven-year contract with Red Bull, including $15 million in bonuses. In second place is Lewis Hamilton, who earned $57 million - including $2 million in bonuses - during his final season as a Mercedes driver. The seven-time world champion could top the list next season with his multi-year contract at Ferrari, though Italian media are as yet uncertain as to the exact value of the contract.

In third place is Norris, who earned $35 million in total. However, a staggering $23 million of that money was paid in bonuses. Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, collected $27.5 million in the year he celebrated his 43rd birthday, with the Spaniard continuing at Aston Martin until 2026 under his current contract. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is in fifth at $27 million, having collected $12 million in bonuses.

Ignore the title, it's not F1. However, I think this is possibly the best video I've ever seen of the Nürburgring/Nordschleife.

I never realised how hilly it is!

It was only after I watched the first one I realised the bloke is one of our companies clients. We fit his garages out with AV gear. And his house I think. Different part of the company but one of ours.

No news on Perez! It’s been a week!
Red Bull Racing has reportedly finalized its driver lineup for the 2025 Formula 1 season. According to recent reports from German media, the Austrian team has decided to part ways with Mexican driver Sergio Pérez and replace him with Liam Lawson, the talented young driver from New Zealand. The official announcement is expected to be made in the coming days, confirming a change that had been widely speculated due to Pérez’s underwhelming performance throughout the 2024 season.

[There are rumours that Alex Albon had a clause written into his contract that he could leave Williams if Red Bull offered him a seat, not sure how true that is but loads of chatter doing the rounds about it.]

I foresee sparks flying betwixt Lawson and Max. LL strikes me as a slightly stroppy young man.

Here it is

Ted Kravitz claimed on the broadcaster’s F1 podcast that there is a clause in Albon’s contract which would allow him to leave Grove and rejoin Red Bull. “As I understand it, there is a get out clause in Albon’s Williams contract that basically allows him to leave if Red Bull come knocking again,” Kravitz said. “Williams could have run Franco Colapinto and Carlos Sainz, perfect, and Alex Albon, at least, would have been a known measure against Max Verstappen. Albon is so much older and wiser and knows how to handle Max and the whole situation and I don’t know why they haven’t done that.”

Albon for his part has made it clear he intends to stay with Williams, saying at the time of his extension that he sees it as a long-term project. “This is a long-term project that I really believe in and want to play a key role in which is why I have signed a multi-year contract,” the 28-year-old said.
