What an empty feeling. Really couldn’t take it last night and waking up today, remembering what happened, was shit too. Reading back thru this thread, the most helpful comment was Ted Striker saying “it’s only the Euros”. I’ll take that small consolation and save my tears for if we lose the World Cup final. Roll on Qatar…

so sorry for everyone else who’s suffering from the disappointment

I just heard on the news that a mural of him in Manchester has been defaced :(

I don't think I can support England anymore. There are just too many cunts who support them. Booing every single anthem. Booing the taking of the knee. And now this all too predictable reaction.

Still fuming at that penalty selection to be honest. It looks stupider and stupider in the cold light of day.

I really, really, really hope he didn't pick them to make some kind of political point that has now backfired dreadfully but the suspicion is there.

It was Southgate's pick apparently, not volunteers.

The racists defacing murals don't support England.

I've realised I can support England, well certainly this current generation, as a team - because they're all boss as individuals. But I've no inclination to go to a match, sadly a disproportionate number of the 'fans' are the kind of people you see in a pub and then walk straight out again....

Do you remember what happened to Beckham after the 1998 World Cup?

That was pretty awful - didn't someone rename their pub or something...?

Really hope these three young lads won't get it in the neck but playing United with Rashford and Sancho up front next season could see a few boos.

You appear not to get Southgate.

He took responsibility for the selection after they had lost. If England had won, he wouldn't have been going around crowing about how he picked them. He'd have stepped back to allow the players the glory. That's how Southgate rolls.

Virtually impossible to recreate the pressure of a shoot out, so you pick your best penalty takers, with the strongest going first.

In hindsight you might end up regretting the decision, but it's only a mistake if they miss.

I agree with this. But I think he could have changed his selection as it became clear that a 19yo kid with limited experience was about to take a career and life defining kick, maybe he was just too rigid in his 'list'

I was a bit right about emerson. He was at fault for shaw's goal. He didn't know whether to try to stop the cross or go with the runner and ended up doing neither.

Sometimes it's the older players who are the bags of nerves. I don't think there's a right answer. Or at least, the right answer is only known after the fact. Anyone can miss a pen. Five out of the ten taken last night were missed.
