England v South Africa Test Series

vital runs to ensure the Ashes were won, built the platform for victory in Durban and ground out some tough runs in the face of top order failure today

well batted

he's never scored a Test double century btw so I have no idea where you got that from

edit: oh I see, you're combining his innings v Bangladesh

Averages 69 v Pakistan, 48 v South Africa, 43 v Sri Lanka and 41 v West Indies. More soft runs I guess.

His two dodgy opponents are Australia and India, both around 25.

In an era when the worlds top batsmen are averaging in the 50s, and the worls leading bowlers average in the high 20s, low 30s, he has an inflated average which just touches 40, which was the benchmark for a good quality test batsman 40 years ago.

If he was any good, he wouldn't be batting 6 at this stage of his career?

Batting number 6.. soft runs, soft dismissals and all stats inflated by 227* vs Bangladesh at the start of his career. Averages at best in the high 30s which is not the mark of a good test batsman.

I imagine a similar conversation is currently going on in SA about Duminy. He doesn't look test quality to me. Not for a vital position in the 'best side in the world'...

Wasn't his 166 vs Oz last year meant to be one of the great innings? Done next to nothing since mind you.

the original comment was that he's made valuable contributions to three of England's last four Test matches. Which he has.

He's been poor against Australia and India and decent against everyone else

Ian Bell doing the job people say he doesn't do

Sorry, but your comment that he does the job people say he doesn't.. was the one that got me.

He has always been my cue to go and get a drink during a Test.

You clearly think he's alright, whereas I clearly don't and I don't think any amount of stat slinging will persuade either of us otherwise!

OK

if he's destined to be nothing more than a number 6 averaging around 40, so be it. It's not what we hoped for him but in that role I'd rather have him than Shah, Bopara or whoever else is around atm.

can confirm that South Africans don't bother turning up to home Tests, probably got short attention spans or something

getting out after getting set on 40? that's EXACTLY the job of a no. 6 in his position.

note to me: maybe i should read to the end of threads before posting :)

I think all you english folk should appreciate that you do, actually, have a very good side at the moment.

But then. You're english. Carry on complainin :D

Yeah Gabi, it must suck having a national side that is already 2 wickets down before they even start the innings. :D

You really are a welcome addition to the level of intellect of this forum.... Thank you once again for helping us gain this lil beauty...

that cheer that went up when the referral was given out - shit, there's a load of england fans there!

Right we're getting thumped here so time for some maths.

SA are about 250 ahead with a further 37 overs possible today (weather permitting). At the moment they are taking about 25 overs to get a tonne, so by the end of play tonight the lead could be as much as 400, although there should be a wicket or two to slow the rate.

I reckon they'll look to bat till lunch tomorrow leaving a lead of around 500. England will then have to bat 5 sessions to save the match, which has never really been Englands thing.

Our best bet is Smith wants too many runs thereby leaving England no chance, that way we won't try and chase a highly improbable win.

I think England have been on some of this:

It's onomatopoeia :p SA don't look like they want to declare as late as lunch tom!

No way will they give England two full days, in theory you could get 600 + in that time. No, they will look to declare around lunch tomorrow.
