England Cricket 2022

Sorry, I was thinking of the other dismissal a couple of balls earlier which was almost identical to Root's soft dismissal. Diff bowler though. Also spooned gently to mid off.

I fear what effect the football will have on the team. The match didn’t start until midnight Multan time. If I was Pakistan, I’d make sure plenty of booze was available in the England hotel.

Lunch day 4, and there will be a result within the next session. Pakistan need 64, or England need 3 wickets (and both batters are tailenders on 0).

4th innings on a Pakistani pitch and seamers are still doing some damage, refreshing.

Needing 64 has very quickly become needing 45, Abrar having an excellent swing of the bat.

Enter Sir James Anderson, needing 3 becomes needing 2...

Extraordinary few overs! But such is the way of the clubber — rapid score and then gone.

Abrar is probably man of the match. But if England go on to win, there are a few across the team that could challenge him. Duckett, most likely. But Brook, Leach, Wood — all crucial. Even Stokes‘ own pair of innings both provided crucial covering fire.

MotM should normally come from the winning side, the player who made the decisive contribution. But just occasionally the best individual performance can come in a losing side; if England do go on to win this, I'd still give it to Abrar.

While doing some work, I have TMS on BBC Sounds but also the webpage up. This is highly confusing because TMS is several minutes behind reality. I just glanced at the webpage and saw Pakistan as 9 wickets down. I found this bizarre as I was sure I hadn’t heard the 9th wicket. Then a minute later, it happened.

Has it happened yet kabbes ???

26 runs victory, series win, and another excellent advert for the Test format of the game. Really good battle between bat and ball all the way through - relatively low scoring but there was enough there for batters who dug in.

I think Abrar can feel a little aggrieved to not be MotM. It was basically him vs England. On debut. 11 wickets and a runout.

Brook scored 153 and 87 in the last game and didn't get MoM. I think he deserves it.

Fantastic win. Stokes is really advertising 4 day Tests here.

Brilliant cricket from England again. True test is going to be the Ashes. If they go to Australia and beat them in this fashion, that will be super impressive.

Yeh. Lookin forward to see how this stands up against Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins. Quite a few Aussie cricketers on social media praising this England team which is quite odd :D

I don’t think he can claim credit for the run out!

Edit: my mistake, I was thinking of the wrong run out!

It's the old distraction thing. Tell them how great they are and see if they believe their own publicity. Gotta hope England are smarter than that.

Just seen the replay of that 'catch' which arguably turned the game this morning.

Clearly touched the ground but the third umpire's hands were tied because of the stupid fucking soft signal. When are they going to get rid of that? It's either out or its not. Axe that and Umpire's Call please. Trust the technology or don't.

Clearly touched the ground, or there was nothing conclusive either way?

Strongly disagree. Never place all your trust in technology. The best technology is always the human.

Nope.

They stopped trusting umpires to detect no-balls a few feet in front of them but we're trusting their eyesight to detect whether a finger is under a ball 50 yards away.

The “technology” in this instance is still the judgement of another human, just one who didn’t have the benefit of being there to see it live in 3D

Stokes is undoubtedly a brilliant captain but by god he's also a very lucky one. If that hadn't been given I'd wager Pakistan might have pulled it off

Tbf I hadn't seen it yet zoomed like that, frame by frame; I'll agree that looks a lucky one. If I were the TV umpire I'd be giving it not out regardless of the soft signal.

I disagree with doing away with the soft signal though. We should all be familiar with camera foreshortening by now, and it's not always possible to give a definitive answer either way. In those cases, I think it is better to defer to the initial first reaction (i.e. what would have been given for the 100 years pre-dating TV umpires). Therefore in this case, it's not the rule that's wrong but the application, there is enough evidence to overturn the on-field decision.
