England Cricket 2022

I sincerely hope so and that I'm not the one being naive.

I did think dropping Jansen for Harmer was bonkers, however much spin you thought there might be later on. After all, Elgar can always bring himself on as a variation.

/gets coat
I can't work out what Elgar was doing either with team selection or batting first. He's a bit of an enigma.

…a Test squad for the third Test against South Africa next week is expected to be named on Wednesday.

Changes are expected to be minimal after levelling the series at Old Trafford, although Key and the Test head coach, Brendon McCullum, are considering a second spinner alongside Jack Leach should the surface at the Oval dictate a change of tactics.

I hope this is a bluff or a way to wind up Broad. You would of thought they may have watched the previous test and seen the great success of 2 spinners in England. If they use this test to prep for Pakistan they are fucking twats.

Thank fuck, an unchanged squad (i.e. no 2nd spinner)

England squad: Ben Stokes (Durham) captain, James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Jack Leach (Somerset), Alex Lees (Durham), Craig Overton (Somerset), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Joe Root (Yorkshire)

I'll be very surprised if they don't pick the same team (barring injury).

Jamie Overton is injured, which explains his brother's name there. English fast bowlers and injury. :(

In order of speed, that's Wood, Archer, Stone, J Overton, Mahmood, Woakes, Fisher all out for this series. I'm sure I've missed someone there.

As much as I admire what Rob Key has achieved since his unlikely appointment and his own unlikely appointment (in McCullum), why is he involved in selection? I thought they changed it to just the head coach and captain.

He wants at least one full time selector, atm he’s filling in to an extent.

The faith shown in Crawley is extraordinary. I really hope he repays it. If I fucked up anywhere near that many times I'd be on the job hunt. It's an interesting strategy though but was nice to see his teammates supporting him. The fact that 37 or whatever he scored though is seen as a success is pretty funny.

It was a decent innings in the circumstances. He was fourth or fifth out, I think. Shared a good partnership with Bairstow when England were wobbling. Put away the drive and eventually got out to a very good ball. It showed he was trying to learn from past mistakes.

I still don't think he's a natural opener, but if he was picked for the last test, he should very certainly be picked for the next one. It will be interesting to see what they do if he fails again at The Oval, though.

Rode his luck again though. Most of his boundaries looked like they were more luck than judgement.

It's infuriating because he can play test cricket. He can pick which balls to leave and which to play, he can see off excellent bowling, and he can play proper shots. But I can think of maybe one match where he has managed to do all three for any meaningful length of time.

I'm very critical of Crawley but I actually liked his slow grinding 37 more than I would have liked a smash and grab 50. I want the openers to be boring and frustrating to the opposition bowlers. That's their job - take the shine off the ball and sting out of their quicks. Stroke players can get the big numbers.

Just looked again at tickets for the Oval. £175 a ticket, Surrey should be ashamed, they’re not exactly skint.

It’s a choice between heating this winter or a day at the test.

I chose a cold winter.

If he was coming into a strong team, he'd start at five or six then move up the order as he gained in seniority and others above him retired. Like Ian Bell did. They've tried to make him an opener out of desperation really, plus the three proven test-level batters have 4,5,6 sewn up.

It was a very streaky 37. He does edge a lot. He should definitely be buying lottery tickets. He's the luckiest guy in the country.

Bairstow’s out of the test and world cup: Bairstow ruled out of the third Test and ICC Men's T20 World Cup

This is a good opportunity for Harry Brook.

from BBC website -

England batter Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the third Test against South Africa and the Twenty20 World Cup after sustaining a possible broken left leg while playing golf on Friday.

Bairstow confirmed he will need surgery on his Instagram account.

wouldn't having surgery on his leg be more effective?

Playing golf. :(

No bad thing if he misses the t20 World Cup so long as he's fit and raring to go for the Pakistan tests.

I don't give a shit who wins the t20 WC.

Good. Don't know why it's such a 'shock'. He's an excellent batsman. And has surely served his time. So he did a bit of coke, who cares really?

His worst offence is probably kicking that guy while he was on the ground and idly standing round in Bristol while Stokes was cleaning up the homophobic twats.

So, they've cancelled tomorrow. Which probably finishes any chance of a result.

Because some old glorified dole bludger finally did the decent thing and shuffled off. Fuck you Liz.
