England Cricket 2021

Holding's lunchtime session on race was once again quality. His comment that a lot of the people condemning BLM as 'Marxist' and that's the reason they can't support them have no fucking idea who Karl Marx is.

I love that he gets to do this during the lunch break of the whitest sport on the planet.

Agreed, I retract. I guess I meant the whitest sport in England.

Golf's in England. Half of Surrey is a golf course. Going to be a lively debate about whether we should keep them or build new housing on them so we solve the housing emergency.

No. They may not be represented in this particular England team, but among English people of South Asian heritage, cricket is huge both for playing and watching. If you turn up to watch Middx playing t20, you will see lots of Asian families. When Bangladesh played in the WC at the Oval, half of Tower Hamlets turned up to watch - it was three-quarters British Bangladeshis in the crowd cheering them on.

One thing that has been lost to a large degree in England (and Wales, of course, in this context) is a big following and participation among younger people of Afro-Caribbean heritage. That's an issue with cricket that it hasn't addressed very well. It's linked to many things, from the selling off of playing fields in the 80s to the selling off of TV rights in the 2000s to the failure of clubs to engage with their local populations (I'm looking at you here, Surrey).

It's a difficult one. As a club we've gone out of our way to recruit Afro-Caribbean players via social media, local (we're based less than 1 mile from Brixton) advertising, and leafleting, but gained very little traction. We've got loads of Indians, Pakistanis, Saffas, Kiwis, and Aussies but hardly any black lads. There are a lot of AC clubs but they tend to be populated by older guys and poaching from them isn't addressing the issue. It's easy to pick on Surrey because they're bang in the middle of Lambeth, but the sport isn't attracting young British Caribbean players in significant numbers for some reason and if that doesn't happen at grass roots level it's not going to push up to counties.

Yeah maybe a bit of a cheap shot. But they do get an awful lot of their players from the private school system.

I empathise. In my martial art, we try to attract more women (women make up around 10-15%, but considerably higher than that among the more senior levels, funnily - those women who do start are more likely to commit). Same story. Not a lot works either.

A few years ago, I heard a cricket coach in South London talking about this exact issue, and she thought that it wasn't just black kids, but w/c white kids as well. She said that she had seen a shift in recent years - kids don't know who the players are, even the stars like Root and Stokes (these were the two examples she gave). She reckoned cricket's disappearance from free tv was a big part of the problem. I reckon that sounds dead right.

...the sport isn't attracting young British Caribbean players in significant numbers for some reason...

Possibly due to the utter shambles that the WI test team has become?

Sadly they a far cry from the completely dominant force the Windies used to be and hardly something lads (or lasses) would want to aspire to :(:(

The batsmen are making no attempt to cut Stone and Wood. This is a terrible game of rock, paper, scissors.

Stone and Wood need to step up in this spell, England have given it their best shot and only got one wicket in that last Anderson/Broad spell.

You'll know I'm sure that Surrey, as you might expect with Ebony RB there, are trying to address it, with local community projects and just as the pandemic started the launch of the ACE Programme (in Edgbaston as well now) The Ace Programme Charity – Supporting Diverse Talent from the Grassroots to the Elite which had a much greater response than they'd anticipated

Lawrence gets Young!

Can probably say that England were a bit unlucky today, but NZ have played well. They're a proper test side with no real weaknesses. Look to be a brilliant set up for a young player to come into.

Still boiling away, this match, but advantage NZ still even with that wicket.

One of the stupid rules in cricket in view. There are three balls left in the over. Someone should have to come out and face them. Why on earth do they not?

I hate to say this, cos I like both Stone and Wood, but Ollie Robinson would have been useful today. Might have found those edges that Broad and Anderson kept missing.

Is there something wrong in that England dressing room? These young guys look scared shitless when they come out to bat/bowl/keep.

I do indeed. Our club is affiliated to SCCC and we play in The Surrey League. The initiatives that I mentioned above are part of ACE, and ERB is possibly the finest ambassador for BAME sport in the business. Unfortunately we don’t have a colts section so haven’t been able to do as much as we’d like but it’s going in the right direction. Are you involved?

No, I'm not involved. I've met Chevy, who's just wonderful. There are a lot of good, good people at The Oval

His commitment borders on obsession and as you say there are a lot of others like him. One of his current projects is finding clubs for Afghan refugees which we've been able to get involved with.

Has there even a more disastrous first (and probably only) two tests than poor James Bracey is enduring?

2 ducks. And I'm fairly sure I'm a better keeper. Letting 8 byes in off two Broad overs. Ouch.
