England Cricket 2015

Maybe they've moved him down the order so he looks more like a specialist spinner :hmm:

He was supposed to come in at 6 (Stokes 8) but the first 4 fell so quickly he was still heading back from a net session. Omnishambles.

Worked out ok with Stokes belting it around, until he left one alone to hit his off stump.

354-7 at close. Buttler's last ball dismissal changes things somewhat - we'd easily be looking at 400+ with two proper batsmen out there, now we're looking for Broad to remember which end of the bat to hold otherwise Ali's stranded.

That's not a bad result since NZ won the toss. They'll be disappointed from 30-4. I wonder what our bowling attack can do though.

I think we'll find out fairly early tomorrow. Cant see our tail lasting too long.......

Great recovery from 30-4 though. Disappointed for Root and Stokes not getting tons. Bell needs a score badly....

Yeah considering NZ put them in and had four down before lunch you have to say that it was probably England's day in the end.

Very pleased that Wood is playing they need a proper bowler.

As much as I loathe the idea of an Australian coaching England Dizzy would be a breath of fresh air to these stale farts in management.
you have hit the nail on the head,an Aussie would be just the tonic to prick all the stuffed shirts that run the cricket over there. The home of cricket is an abysmal mess and has been for years, said it on here years ago, fresh young blood in the team including the management to the top.KP should never have been sacked for a start,he should have been told to shut the fuck up and just play(Aussie approach)Dizzy would be an attacking coach,no bullshit or kissing arses, get in, do your job or fuck off

blah blah blah blah

Well done Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali today.

Played without fear and showed up McCullum as rather naive.

Magnificent day of cricket. May many more follow. NZ are a good team but England are competing. WI were nowhere nearly as bad a team as some were making out, and England competed with them.

Aus? We'll see. Their batting can fail this summer. Their only consistently reliable bowler is Harris. He may go crook. He may be on the cusp of being past it. Johnson may or may not come off. Starck may or may not come off.

Looking forward to a glorious summer. :)

200 up, 5 down - 4 rank failures and a superb 92 for Stokes. Still hope for a score here - Buttler just starting out and Root playing like the game's easy, still with Moeen Ali to come in at 8.

Question - if the two glaring problems from a selection point of view are an opener and Ali as front line spinner, what would be wrong with putting Moeen at the top of the order and picking a proper spinner (probably Rashid)? Cook and Ballance are both grinders, taking a bit out of the bowlers and the new ball when they get it right - Ali would offer something as a proper stroke player and it would give us 2 very different spin options with Rashid as a leggy.
Not the worst idea. Mind you Moeen has to be the best number 8 in world cricket. :D

It kind of worked today - somehow. Top order won't fail like that every time, though. This is the kind of getting out of jail that the great Aus team used to achieve with Gilchrist at 7. Just say 'yay'. It's all good.

Other than the Australian tour of 2010-11, when have the top order batted consistently well?
Last summer against India they were pretty good. Top orders are never really consistent, though. It's the nature of batting that you have high scores and low scores.

Anyway, for this match the top order effectively extended down to 8, and it did ok in the end.

Competitive morning. Good from Broad and Wood. Think Wood was really unlucky not to have two from two. That lb against Williamson looked very out in real time. Reckon the umpire got that wrong, really. Ball didn't have far to travel, and I can't see how the ump thought it was missing, tbh.

Williamson wobbling after his hundred. A couple more quickly, and there's a chance of getting them for under 500, and that leaves the match still open.

So we need to bat most of tomorrow, leave them 400+ and put them in for the last 30 minutes. Not going to be easy, I reckon. Odds on to lose this one. They look like a very competent side.

Good match. I think England were a touch unlucky today, but also missed chances.

NZ about one session ahead at the moment, so yes, England will need to bat well tomorrow. They won't be declaring with a bit to go tomorrow night though. I guarantee that.

Leaving them 400+ and putting them in tomorrow will take some doing, Bandwagon. That means scoring 470 in about 80 overs!

Broad was good today. Wood was also good - like the look of him, reminds me of Simon Jones. Stokes a bit wayward. Anderson flat.

You're right, that's optimistic. No real chance of winning and every chance of giving it up.

60 behind. Essential that Bell and Cook knock those off. 5-8 could easily add 200 given that Root is invincible.

250+ could be defendable. Optimist.

I still think England are short a bowler, if they are going to go with Ali as their spinner then the fourth seamer has to be able to take wickets.

Stokes did really well on day one of this Test and dropping him would be harsh but the fact is he has to contribute more with the ball. 25 wickets at 43 in 10 matches, I know he's been unlucky at times but England need a bowler who can take wickets (even if they have to buy them sometimes), Stokes doesn't look like he's able to do that to me.

England are in a strange situation at the moment with two batting allrounders. Batting allrounders are rare beasts, so to have two is unusual. There's almost a case for playing six bowlers and having Stokes and Ali bat at five and six. I agree that having those two as your fourth and fifth bowlers gives a bit of a lightweight feel to the attack.

Game on here. Match back in the balance - either side can start to move ahead this next session.
