Elon Musk - news and discussion

I think this is one of the reasons how we ended up at Trump 2. People just can’t believe the facts that face them and decide not to believe what they see and believe instead that people are misunderstood/look away.

people using the quote from 1984.

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

are not far off .

And in the moment, you reckon, he thought, I'll just chuck in a couple of Nazi salutes, why not?
yep, got caught up in the atmosphere while his brain was spaced. I mean look at the expression on his face - it looks like hatred to me, certainly not the love coming from his heart he was suggesting.

Or quite plausibly as ska invita says he planned it from the outset after watching too many AfD style videos. Either one really.

Sadly, it seems that many people willingly do it without anyone specifically telling them too. I fear that with the increase of AI it will just get worse.

Was just discussing this with a real life non internet person, who said similar to what Spymaster wrote earlier - the idea that he intentionally went out on stage to do some Nazi salutes is way more bonkers than most other explanations of what happened.

I think this is one of those things where a certain portion of the internet gets over-excited and ends up arriving at some slightly bizzare conclusions with silly levels of certainty.

If you already strongly believe Musk is a wrongun (for the record, I believe he is a wrongun) then there's a quite powerful incentive to believe that he's done something that unambiguously proves that he's the worst type of wrongun that most people can think of. The more benign explanations are unappealing.

We see the same sort of thing here on urban quite often.

To someone who hasn't been paying attention to his posts or prior behaviour and thinks the right is still just the same right it's always been I have no doubt that's the case. But it's not without context, and it's simply not realistic that Elon Musk, a well educated, wealthy man with plenty of public speaking experience, somehow just awkwardly did a full chest beating Nazi salute on accident. That's wishful thinking by people who don't want to think the world is what it is and prefer to pretend it's what it used to be.

Which is understandable. People don't want to believe the world is outlandish and unfamiliar. But it's also putting head in sand rather than engaging with reality. Lots of people do the same thing with climate change, and they're wrong there as well.

The man is unstable and likely on drugs. He probably didn’t think much at all.
Ok, so then was the thank you / my heart goes out to you stuff just kind of coincidental, in that his gestures could be interpreted as representing that sentiment? In other words, he wasn't doing some kind of double meaning plausible deniability stuff?

To be fair, he couldn't have given them a better case for confirmation bias! :D

Stepping back though, Musk is all kinds of wrong but he's definitely not a total idiot. The potential for the immeasurable damage that this could do his businesses alone, makes me question his chucking Nazi salutes on purpose and with malice aforethought, so to speak.
The guy has proven to be very impulsive on a number of occasions. Like the day he called that guy a pedophile. He is so rich that nothing can really touch him, that's been reinforced by his current position, and he is riding a high at the moment. He's recently heavily backed various far right movements and we can only imagine what discussions, jokes, and conversations are now normalised behind closed doors.

I've no idea what was going through his head in that moment, but I don't think it's wild to consider it might be intentional when you look at his other behaviour. And he can just brush it off and deflect it on to everyone else.

Could well be, I've never taken it so I don't know. Looked a bit like coke to me for the power trip. Or speed? I've known a couple of speed freaks they don't know what the fuck they're doing.

I struggle with being impulsive, and can struggle with regulating my behaviour in different environments and that can be more difficult when I am intoxicated - especially on alcohol for me. Trying to identify the specific drug that people think he might be on is unhelpful in my opinion and not really relevant, especially if we are going to start using language like "speed freaks" and start generalising about people who use particular substances.

This is kind of the basis of every populist party ever, too. Or you can use it to back up "had enough of experts" type viewpoints as well. It's just a quote from a book. Conspiracy theorists love it.

What's happened to his businesses then?

indeed, I've had a few times on speed - normally I think when it's mixed in with e's when I've found it very pleasant because it just seems to prolongue the e trip.
Wrong forum, but yes, e plus speed is a classic combo for a reason. I think we can safely assume that Musk was not on ecstasy at the time of his stiff-armed waving to the crowd.

If someone is a drug addict it’s hard to derive any sense from what they do.

Sieg heiling on the presidential podium , behind the presidential seal, during The presidential inauguration in front of the world's press........ is some next level shit though.

When did it become, meh, let's move on, and not dragged of stage, drug tested and career terminated at the very least,.......... end of Obama? Or Clinton's oral office, the Www ?

The drug speculations are irrelevant tbf. Regardless of whether or not he is chemically altered at various times, he is clearly unhinged. His recent posting history on Twitter shows that. I wouldn't overestimate the amount of planning that is going into Musk's current foray into politics. It could well do him an enormous amount of harm, and he has a long way to fall.

There are no consequences for him. He is so immeasurably rich that nothing can touch him. I think you need to have that in mind whenever you think about why he is doing things. Getting some fines, losing some share value, oh no the board aren't happy. Nobody is ever going to imprison him. He is at such an unimaginable level of wealth that it's driven him a bit mad.

You're making the mistake of talking about him like he's a normal person. He doesn't live in the world that we all do.

He supports fascists. Openly and often. He repeats things like great replacement theory. He says that Farage isn't right wing enough. He says that neo nazis are the best choice for Germany. He does this openly and often, to an audience of billions. He's started calling himself weird Latin names, you know, like those fascists do. And what? He won't pull out a fascist salute? Why not? What's going to happen to him? Cos he just did it. And nothing has happened to him. Nothing at all.

Someone on reddit remarked about Trump waving a sword around on stage during the inauguration - what would republicans say if Biden did that?

Similar really, all the way down.
