Elon Musk - news and discussion

This from the Times is a bit worrying. It probably won't happen, but worrying to think it could. Are there not limitations on what an individual/single body can donate to a partty?

hmm would he not just been passing t
it away even.. I know he elected now but farrage took hoe many attempts to become an MP (even when half the country was backing his bullshit)

not a political powerhouse based on elections result by any shot. not sure 100 million would be enough

I believe only UK citizens and UK registered companies can donate but given Musk's wealth and influence he will have no problems finding a way round that. £100m is chump change to him.
I believe there were attempts to tighten the rules before the last GE but the Tories killed them off. It'll be funny if they get hoisted by their own petard.

hmm you forget that Tories have very little moral or sense of honour.. was Ress Mogg not suggesting rolling out the red carpet for the frog faced twat after the last election :hmm:

He can donate from the UK-registered Twitter company.

I have found myself wondering a bit this week whether I should get round to signing up to Bluesky, but I think the important thing is that I still need to be less rather than more online, and I don't think that using Bluesky will help with that.
See I've been quite enjoying threads and interacting with the people on there, but it is still Meta and designed to more or less surpress political content, plus it's pretty basic. I'm trying out bluesky and it does have much better interface for finding topics that interest you and it's not meta, but I don't really want to run both. It may be that I have to for a time until I've got a bit more of a handle/follwing on bluesky.

I was a total drop in the ocean on Twitter, and barely got any interaction, so barely missed it at all when I left and very quickly got much more interaction on Threads, that I think I will on bluesky if I stick with it for a bit.

Raccoons Mistake Cybertruck for Dumpster, And Wyoming Auto Experts Agree

After raccoons tried unsuccessfully to break into the covered bed of a Minnesota man’s Cybertruck, he went online to brag the the vehicle had proven itself “raccoon-proof.”

It didn’t take long for thousands of responders to point out that while his Cybertruck may be secure from raccoons, the troublemaking critters apparently think the Cybertruck looks like a dumpster.

People started teasing him, saying the trash pandas went after the Cybertruck in the first place because it looks similar to the garbage dumpsters they’re used to raiding.

Some Wyoming auto experts say that’s not an unfair assessment.

“I do think the Cybertruck, in a certain light, looks exactly like a dumpster,” automotive writer Aaron Turpen of Cheyenne told Cowboy State Daily.

Automotive journalist Vince Bodiford agreed.

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has announced that it will stop publishing content on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, from January 20th, 2025, when Donald Trump will officially become the 47th president of the United States.

The organisation stated that it can “no longer ethically participate in a social network that its owner has transformed into a machine of disinformation and propaganda”.

The EFJ is the largest organisation of journalists in Europe, representing over 295,000 journalists in 44 countries has announced that it will stop posting content on X.

This seems like the right choice to me but a while ago I was in talking to a journalist about twitter after the Musk takeover and she told me she thought Musk's goal was to drive journalists off the platform so it could become a pure echo-chamber of fake news, conspiracy theories and fascist propaganda. If her theory is correct, Musk is succeeding in this goal. Nonetheless, it still seems right to that a platform so vile and toxic needs to be boycotted at this stage. The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house and all that.

If enough ordinary people and professionals leave Xhitter, then all who'll be left on there will be the bots, weirdos and chuds. They'll come to hate that there aren't any "libtards" around for them to "own", and the place will become a stagnant cesspool of dittoheads and scammers, just like Truth Social. Musk has already been whining about the exodus to Bluesky, and the blue ticks are already crying about "freedom of speech" because that place gives users plenty of tools for blocking their attempts at being bullying pieces of shit.

Yes, that's what one hopes will happen. I don't think politicians will leave in a hurry now though, because Musk so closely connected to Trump, leaving X for alternative platforms like bluesky could be seen as a snub against Trump, who, sadly politicians are now trying to court for various geo-political reasons. And if the politicians stay, so will various pundits.

Filings show that Musk spent more than $250 million supporting Trump's campaign and funded the group that produced these ads:

The PAC ran ads stating Trump does not support a federal abortion ban. Its website’s homepage features images of Trump and late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg side by side with the caption “Great Minds Think Alike.” Ginsburg wrote in support of reproductive freedom and supported the precedent put forth in the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, which established the constitutional right to abortion.

musk called for the defunding of the ACLU yesterday

guy in charge of government cuts does not know who is getting funded by the US government
