Elon Musk - news and discussion

Trucks in British parlance would usually mean HGVs (lorries), but in American it's pickup trucks of varying sizes.

This sort of thing:

Like SUVs, they're slowly becoming more popular over here for no good reason other than because people are morons.

Quite a number of them in Australia, with the caveat being, they’re mostly always driven by a person carrying a trailer with heavy machinery.

I wanted a pickup truck ever since I was a kid and it disappoints me that at 42, I’ve still never found a justification for getting one.

oh, and some recently released documents about how Tesla and Musk directly tried to have a whistleblower SWATted

Yeah, I've been following the Tripp stuff for a while, because of the trade secrets angle. He's been accused of accessing proprietary materials, notably after raising safety concerns iirc.

If you can’t be bothered to watch this the short answer is - the glass broke because the windows were slightly open.

Or, for those less gullible, the glass broke because it's ... glass.

Theres footage of guy throwing same projectile at window before they bring the cyber truck out on stage and windows stay intact.

When they brought the truck onto stage for everyone one of the first tests is hitting the side panel with a mallet - which for some unknown reason causes the windows to open slightly making them less rigid compared to when closed.

If they’d done the window test first (before the mallet test) the windows would likely have stayed intact.

That’s about the gist of it.

That's an F150 and it's the best selling vehicle in the US since the early 80s. It's not the biggest by a long way and you can get more ridiculous versions of that model too.

At least in the rural or agricultural US or Aus they make sense. Not so much here, even for farmers.

Yeah, I saw something about that, I wouldn’t have even guessed that a pickup was the most sold vehicle in America.

I thought Musk just made his truck for the hell of it just because he can but he’s looking to be a major disruptor in a billion dollar sector.

Fair play to Tesla and Musk if he pulls it off and defeats the gas guzzlers.

I don't know that building a big fuck off truck for people who don't need trucks, some Americans aside, is really a social or environmental victory, no matter how it's powered.

Highly impractical for the U.K. I’d say.

Unless they make a ‘baby’ version for over here.

People will buy this shit and then deal with the consequences later, or rather leave them to other people, as with SUVs. And unlike someone predicted, nothing bad will happen to them, just as nothing bad happens to Lamborghinis or whatever other public displays of selfishness that people leave lying around the public realm.

I love a lot of elements of cars and motoring, but I hate with a greater passion so many other big chunks of it.

its ugly but i can see its use in the rural USA- the F150s and suchlike have a hard life- i cannot yet see this carrying around lumber and pigs in Wisconsin

Absolutely tons of these shitting things around here, but then Essex going to Essex.

At least a fraction of them are actually used by tradesmen at least.

They are popular with builders etc because they get a flash motor which is actually a commercial vehicle so they can claim back the VAT.

A lot of self employed guys I know have one for precisely that reason. And the manufactures know it too, which is you can buy a supposed "commercial" vehicle with full leather interior, air con, bluetooth and all the other toys a top of the line rep-mobile would have.

The defamation lawsuit against Musk started yesterday.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-50641397

Tesla boss Elon Musk is due to take the stand in a Los Angeles court and face the British diving specialist he accused of being a paedophile.

Vern Unsworth was among the team credited with co-ordinating the July 2018 rescue of 12 boys trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand.

Mr Musk, in a now-deleted tweet, described Mr Unsworth as a “pedo guy”.

The entrepreneur gave no evidence to support the comment. He is being sued for defamation.

Lawyers representing Mr Unsworth have described Mr Musk’s tweets as “vile and false”. The British diver is seeking punitive and compensatory damages.

Musk’s defence is that he didn’t mean it literally and that Unsworth had said that he could stick his submarine up his arse.

... he had not expected the tweet to be taken literally. "I assume he didn't mean to sodomise me with a submarine... Just as I didn't literally mean he was a paedophile."

:D
