Elon Musk - news and discussion

Apparently 75k is the minimum amount in order to have the case. Its what you say even if you are going to ask for millions.

My impression of this diver fella is that he just wants his name cleared. Wouldn't be surprised if he gives it to charity.

He's suing in the UK under UK law so why anyone would bother consulting an American lawyer is anyone's guess.

I read he is suing in both the US and the UK.

American libel law seems a lot trickier to get something to stick than in the UK. Given he's up against a stupendously rich person I hope he is on no win no fee.

Meanwhile in a secret bunker somewhere in the Southof England another selfpublicising purveyor of home-made tech is staking his claim to Musk's crown. James Dyson has his own electric car being secretly tested to be unveiled in 2020 and to be available to the more gullible members of the public in 2021.
My electric dreams: James Dyson tells of plans for 'silent city' of electric cars

One of the multitude of Johnsons told him to sey up his own University so jr did.

Don't be a plank, Frank. That'll be why the suit has been filed in federal court in LA as well as here then, will it?

The pay dirt will come from the US case.

Since the libel law changes in 2013 its apparently pretty difficult to sue non-EU residents for libel in the UK.
There is an extra barrier - it has to be shown that " of all the places in which the statement complained has been published, England and Wales is clearly the most appropriate place in which to bring an action in respect of the statement." As a British citizen, that should be compratively straightforward. The abrrier was there to stop the likes of Polanski suing (American mag) Paris Match in British courts cos he thought they were more favourable.

I agree there seems to be more justification for a UK case than for that example or for two squabbling Russian oligarchs etc, but I couldn't find much about how strict courts are in interpreting where the most appropriate place is when the defendant is not a UK resident or citizen. It may not even have been tested in court yet, and Unsworth might not be considered a UK resident anymore. Also because of the SPEECH act, US courts can only enforce foreign libel judgements if the case would also have been libel in the US, in which case why not just sue in the US in the first place (although Musk may have UK assets as well).

This is not really news, it's been known he was doing it because there was a court case about one of his employees allegedly stealing confidential information because he was working on the top secret EV project and accepted a job with a competitor. Court case was sealed, but unsealed several months ago.

Dyson claims he's going to invest £2bn in this project. Haven't believed him since he berated the British government for not supporting UK manufacturing then moved his production base to Malaysia. His foray into kitchen appliances didn't go well either.

I'm sure the vehicle will suck, which, in my experience, is something you cannot say about his hoovers.

Tesla's not going private then, as was entirely obvious from the off. If the US were a functioning state with a functioning SEC, Musk'd probably be looking at prison for securities fraud. As it is, probably nothing will happen.
Turns out it is happening. Being charged with securities fraud by the SEC.

Well, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that’s not going to happen. :)
Again, probably. It's not all in his favour though: with this (stock down 10% today), Pedogate and other incidents, there's now lots of Tesla investors that'd like to throw him under the bus in exchange for a proper boss, the particulars of this shitshow don't seem to offer simple excuse or mitigation, and it speaks to core values of modern America - don't fuck with the market - enough for it to at least hold interest.

SEC co-director of enforcement: "We allege Musk arrived at the price of $420 by assuming a 20 percent premium and rounding up to $420 because of its significance in marijuana culture and his belief his girlfriend would be amused by it."

:D

A lot of investors won’t go for throwing him under the bus - you lose an erratic manager but you also lose the ideas guy.
