Dash and Monero also seem to be gaining in similar fashions (even more in Dash's case).

What the hell is goin on?

Well mined over £5 in a week with ZEC, and that's with a cheap GFX card, getting 160 sol at the moment, might get a dual card set up and some beefy cards and see what happens.

Probably nothing but worth a punt.

How much electricity did that consume?

For the sake of simple maths, say it uses 500w, that means 0.5 units per hour, at 15p per unit, means £1.80 per day (if running 24hrs).

I'm not looking or working it out :D The PC is only mostly anwyay as it runs a plex home server which on uses the CPU and the Network,.

just want to mine some, have them there and if they take off they do, if they dont i have some zeros and ones for my efforts :D

Fuck me the BTC rig is loud, need get some silent fans for it. :D

How do you actually mine? I wouldn't mind trying it, not for the coins, but purely out of geek interest.

I used this guide for my PC to mine ZEC, took me about 2 hours to figure it out and see it working.

How to mine Zcash ZEC - Windows | CryptoCompare.com

You can mine BTC with windows but it's fucking ballache setting up so I didn't bother with it.

Once I get some decent cards in the PC it will make me about 10 times as much, but obvs take some time to get pay back on the cards.

Ooh thanks, I might try. I have an AMD R9 or something.

What's 'good' about Zcash as a crypto-currency then?

No idea, there is a few alts to BTC, this one looked the easiest to do :D
obvs you can convert this to BTC for a fee once you have mined enough.

Well, are people dumping Bitcoin for Ethereum? Seems like "The Flippening" may be happening because Bitcoin are "doing a Brexit" and causing an issue for themselves by having a civil war over Core v Unlimited.

That's how it feels to me anyway.

Will converted my ZEC to BTC and got £3.64 :D

I have no doubt the site I used had massive fees to exchange as it was late and I was pissed

also made 0.00000394 BTC of my BTC rig while setting it up, needs new quiet fans

Bitcoin bounces up and down. Altcoins tend to shoot up then disappear.

Oh I'm holding on to my 1 bitcoin for sure. That's probably all I'll ever have....just to be able to say I own one whole Bitcoin :D

Saying that, I will probably buy about £50 on payday to actually use for transactions.

I do have some Ethereum, as I see that has a strong future with all the development going on. Hell, two of my senior developers in work were head hunted by an ex colleague that is starting a project using Ethereum smart contracts. It's what made me buy a bit of Ethereum the other week. What I've read about it, it seems to have a lot of uses and COULD be something that takes off as a platform (rather than a currency).

Seems to be dropping like a stone today (bitcoin and ethereum).

So who the fuck knows, lol

Crypto sure is fun!

Ignore the short term - both the bubbles and panics. The potential of these things is unknown. They might be a dead end or the future of money.

Something that I saw the other day that really interested me was the idea that crypto currency could be used to stream money. Real time, continuous payment. The implications of this are pretty mind blowing from a functional finance point of view.

It's all going a bit Manga in the bitcoin world right now, Core verses BU- with a number of Exchanges having pledged to recognize Core in the event of a fork and a smaller number but with some significant names (like localbitcoins) not having signed on to the agreement so far. Meanwhile the evil forces of Ethereum look on with glee, rubbing hands and egging on. What will happen next?

Hail Core! Death to to the hated BU, and the Renegade Big-Blocker Scum that back them! Only the Longest Chain is valid! does the salute.

The iterative, experimental nature of bitcoin is its strength. It gives the speculators a ball to bounce back and forward, but it allows a kind of evolution and learning that can only make the protocol stronger (unless it turns out to be ultimately flawed).

Is there a for-the-layman article that explains this latest drama?

The statement: Hardfork Statement 3.17 11.00am

Should there be a contentious hardfork, the BU project will be listed by the undersigned as BTU and the longest chain (as defined as Bitcoin by Satoshi) will continue to be known as BTC, the markets must be ready in the event of a Contentious HF so that they can continue to trade (considering such things as leveraged positions etc).

This is considered support for Core, though some BU people are saying they wouldn't fork unless they had the longest chain anyway. Personally I support Core and consider BU an altcoin.

Soft fork = doesn't change the underlying protocol; an optional add on to give extra functionality.

Hard fork = fundamental change to protocol. Either everyone changes, or you get two currencies.
