Asylum seekers forced to wear coloured wristbands

And the guy who painted his white only to have the company come and re-paint it red?

That's what landlords do when you paint their doors. Landlords are jobsworths, but if you are going to make a perfectly-reasonable criticism of the wristband story, it doesn't help when you sensationalise the door story by making it out to be something it isn't. It was an unfortunate side-effect of contracting out; there was no intent to identify asylum seekers via door colour.

The Guardian certainly thinks there were, there were discussions in 2012 that it may lead to problems, but I think you are right. Liberal hysteria seem to win out these days, though i don't see much of it when it comes to the deaths from sanctions.

He's not right ffs.

So you are claiming that this company specifically painted doors red to identify people as asylum seekers? From what I've read it seems it is all an unfortunate turn of events. I'm perfectly willing to believe you if you have any evidence to the contrary.

Well I'd say they were in a minority. Landlords are, in my experience, in the business of building mini-fiefdoms. Do anything without their say at your peril. This applies especially to landlords that own big portfolios of property.
Landlords are in the business of making as much money out of property as possible. They don't piss about repainting people's doors unless there is some sort of motive above and beyond that. Even the pundits on Radio 4 picked that one up.

Part of making as much money as possible is buying paint in bulk. There are houses round where I live that are easily-identifiable as owned by a particular landlord who likes the colour Racing Green. No refugees live at those properties, and if any of the tenants decided to repaint their door without permission, the landlord would no doubt paint it back to assert their authority. Money and power are the same for these types of people.

Of course, now that it has become clear that the red doors are functioning to identify people, the council should step in and force the landlord to vary the paint work.

This is junk. At worst they would bill the tenants an absurd amount for the damage at the end of the lease, and then not do anything at all. No landlord would actively repaint a door unless there was a specific reason for it.

No landlord would actively paint a whole bunch of doors to deliberately identify the tenants as asylum seekers. What would the motivation be?

To clearly identify houses where aslyum seekers lived? Maybe for the benefit of rent collectors. I dunno. There was clearly a difference, unless you propose that landlord conglomerates are somehow obsessed with door colours to the point that they'll have them repainted.

Leave asidethe doors thing. The wristbands. There is no rational reason other than marking out the wearers as other. Even school dinner bands you could take off your wrist. Plastic bit a card with a number on would account for meals there is no reason to have to visibly identify an asylum seeker abroad. I.E as they go about in the community. Well no rational reasons other than some sinister ones I can think of.

Why?

Maybe for the benefit of rent collectors. I dunno.

Rent is paid by the government. It's a contract between the state and the landlord. Nothing is collected at the door, and even if it was, there are these things called house numbers and road names that serve the purpose quite well.

The company will have painted all the doors of their properties red; this is very common for companies like this. It just so happened that the government chose a single company to outsource to, and that this company had red doors that stood out.

Good point. I don't want to derail the thread. The wristband issue is the more serious one here.

No they don't. If I repainted my door my landlord wouldn't give a shit.

Some housing associations are quite fussy about it. We had an issue getting a security door fitted to a house once because the housing association the woman rented from had all their doors painted the same and in the same style and the security door would have made the cul de sac look different. We got it in the end but they were quite awkward about it. Not that this is a justification of what's happened like.

Did they send someone out to repaint the door?

They weren't painted red to identify them. The contract to house asylum seekers was handed to a single company who happened to have properties with red doors.
Aye, true enough, but the properties are Shyte and the 'red doors' are a result of hiring the cheapest decorators around, they are slum landlords, pure and simple.
