i think the best i can come up with is one great-grandparent (or maybe it's great-great-grandparent) from each of wales and scotland...

I could apply for Portuguese citizenship through my partner, kids are already dual nationals registered in both countries. Quite easy and cheapish (about £250), no language test etc. Would be useful as when we go over to see family we could at least all be in the same queue at the airport, also might mean I don’t need to sell a kidney to afford health insurance (a big shitty thing to come from this is the limits it places on those of us with long term illnesses). Might also go there to retire depending on the state of the world at the time.

The EU only offers grants for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degrees.

What you refer to when you say General Subsidies is in fact a regulatory regime.
Uh, no:

Overview of fee structures and grants.
However, as an EU citizen studying at university in another EU country:

  • you cannot be required to pay higher course fees.
  • you are entitled to the same grants to cover course fees as nationals of that country.
All of that is gone from 1 Jan.

It was thought that my maternal grandfather (RAF pilot in the war, flew the first fighter jets in the 50s, a bigamist, walked out on his family when his kids were 3 and 2 years old respectively and hasn't been seen since) was born in Dublin, so could be a possible source of an Irish passport. However, after some investigation, a birth certificate was found that says 0he was born in Mornington Crescent, so no joy there.

Not sure I wanted a passport from someone who I can only view as a tosser who wrecked several families.

To save time in airport queues on holiday. (Course that may just be media scare stories but it's another possible reason.)

Portugal has already said they will have a special U.K. lane, I would imagine others will too in the same way that you see the EU lane with a Swiss flag next to it, you’ll see the Union Flag too. It will make the system manageable, so unless maniacs like philosophical are in charge this won’t be a thing.

And really, even if it were a thing, would you spend the time and hundreds of pounds to save yourself 30 minutes a year?

I'll wait and see what the reality is next time i travel with my uk passport which is unlikely to be this year anyway due to covid.

I think i qualify for an irish one (via my gran - although i think my mum would need to apply first) but not sure if i will bother. Its not a priority anyway.

It depends on how stroppy and petty UK and Spanish authorities get.

Although in theory Community citizens have rights and Non-Community ones are conceded some of the same rights, if in practice nothing changes then I probably won't become Spanish.

I suppose I won't be able to vote in some elections any more. Things like that.

If there's a lot of tit-for-tat silliness then it might be easier to be Spanish. For the moment I don't even have to do any paperwork though getting foreigners photo ID might be easier than constantly explaining that my community ID is still valid.

This maniac has a long lapsed UK passport sitting in a cupboard and I will be travelling on my Republic of Ireland passport.
Yay.
Indeed 25 years ago when I first went to China the cost of a visa for a British passport holder was £44, but using my Irish passport it was £4.
Brexit voters have created the circumstances for this crap deal which isn't brexit anyway, they are the maniacs.

I'm waiting for the stories in the press of people complaining that their holidays have been ruined because they were denied boarding due to their passport not meeting the rule that they must be less than 9.5yrs old
I reckon something like about 8% of UK passports are no longer valid for the EU.
Come 2022 we will get another crop of such stories from people who didn't realise that they needed an ETIAS

£40 saving on a trip to China is a compelling reason to seek out dual nationality, I grant you that.

What I don’t get is why someone who’s forever harping on about Brexit in relation to Ireland why you don’t seem to be happy that what happened last night is very much the precursor to a united Ireland? See also Gibraltar entering Schengen last night.

We have been warning our punters for quite some time about this, but yes, it will catch people out.

Expect this requirement to be dropped soonish though. Six months validity is about as restrictive as it can be, that came about in the stand off in negotiations, it is not written in stone, e.g. USA it needs to be valid for the period of intended stay only, pre-ESTA it only had to be valid on the day you entered, and for Spain pre-Schengen you could enter on a passport that had expired up to 12 months previously.

I am depressed by a less united Europe not anticipating a United Ireland
I am not keen on nationalism.
The negative aspects of nation states is a contributor to conflict and racism.

Those grants are not from the EU. Your claim is that the EU subsidises higher education.

As I said, it's a regulatory regime. Its not a subsidy.
Irrelevant. It is a benefit of EU citizenship which has now gone poof for Brits unless you have an EU passport.

One of my great grandfathers was born in Carrickfergus, a generation too late. (Or early, depending how you look at it :) )

This will need to included photos of sad-faced kids sat on cute Trunki cases at the airport for the full effect

It is not irrelevant that you claim things that are untrue. It is unhelpful to the discussion that you do not see honesty as something you need to engage in.

You know that bus you're always going on about? You're not any different from that.
